The map is too clumbersome to be used like the radar was, it takes to long to do the same thing. F11 while almost the same means you have to sacrifice 1/5th of your screen, which is distracting, it also doesn't show the distance in AU when you hover with the mouse like the old radar did.
This just made system scanning more fiddly and take longer that it used to.

It's very easy to switch into the solarsystem map, orient your camera in the direction you want to scan (and if you're worried about imminent combat) switch out again. What's more, this is better than the radar display because you can actually see your orientation in all three dimensions. Where's the problem?
Meanwhile your overview is still there, so you can watch out for incoming bad guys, and your safespot BMs are visible on the map right in front of you in case you need to right-click for a quick getaway.
And removing the radar screen means you can resize the scanner window to take up about a quarter of the space it did before, which in turn means you can leave it open full time.
I see both the solarsystem map and an always open scanner window as great tools to improve and widen my situational awareness.
It'd be nice to have a scanner cone option though.
...because if you're in the map you can't see your ship and you can't get close enough to do individual belts/moons/areas of space. You need to be able to scan from your ship to get a truly acurate scan.
It didn't matter that the 'radar' was 2d because you were only ever using that as a reference to what direction you were looking and where abouts you were in the system in relation to other celestial objects.
The normal view is where all the scanning happens, you point the camera and adjust the range/degree accordingly, you can't do this properly while in the map. It takes too long and its too inacurate.

Gah, and why cant i scan for NPC's? Either.
"Ok, theres a raven/BC in the belt and im in a ranis, im gonna need a hand... lets wait till he starts a new spawn... so ill warp in an out seeing if theres rats and hope he doesnt notice."
Bring back scanner man! Trying to find people in a new system is so frustrating i want to cry.
