Hello,
We all know that certain skills are supposed to increase with "use"...someone actually posted a list with several skills that this is supposed to work for.
Well for me the ONLY skill that has ever increased with use is Mechanic (all the way to level 5). I fight with my small energy turrets, I use my afterburners all the time, I always use my survey scanner before using my mining lasers...
So my question to a GM or DEV is this: What am I doing wrong? Why is the only skill that is increasing with use my mechanic skill? Please tell me what I can do to fix this.
If anyone else is having the same problem, please feel free to post here too.
Thank you very much.

AB, turret, ship skills improve with use, too, but a LOT slower than the mechanic skills.

Well, the problem is that there is slow like a snail and slow like a glacier...
When the skill points have not increased by even 1 point over the past 30 days...well it very well could be like you are saying and it's just going up slower than the mechanic skill.
But I'm sure when you said a LOT slower than Mechanic you did not mean ZERO points over 30 days, right?

Depends how often use use it. It goes up very slowly, but going up it does. For example, I have trained my med hybrid skill up to lvl4 (135750 skill points) and used it *very* extensivly for 1 month to kill NPCs and it has grown by ..er.. 500 points, it's on 136250 now
High speed manoveuring has grown to 42k from 32k just by use, though. Afterburners from 45k to 58k. Caldari BS from 64k to 70k.
The skill increase by using is working for most skills, it's just not very good balanced. The skill increase of the mechanic skills is *way* to big - some people reported getting lvl5 without having to train the skill once), while for ships and weapons it's too small.

i believe it actually has to do with fitting the item on your ship, not activating it. so if you are constantly changing your setup, your skills will increase faster. mechanic is increased by hull and armor repairers, which people often only fit when they need, and remove when done.

Wow. Now that is contrary to common sense!
Please, any Devs or GMs who are reading this could you please confirm or deny that this is what is happening?
Thanks

Edited by: Arcain Draconis on 17/11/2003 04:42:23 Anything you fit to a ship gives you a bonus. one minute of skilltraining using appropriate attributes. Changing ships also gives a bonus.
Indys are somewhat different but im guessing all you mecanics out there are haulers and you have cargo expanders on your lowslots... just fly around and watch your skills when you dock or jump or whatever.
Why somethings give bonus and others dont...probably some bizarre ccp logic.

you can only gain skill points by use in one skill every minute .. it may be you always have items that need mechanics to fit installed and that skill is simply getting in before the others for the free points . ----- Apologys for any rambling that may have just occurred.

Argh I wish someone could tell me exactly what to do to get the mechanic skill to auto-train... I can't get it to move a single skill point.
But maybe I shouldn't complain. My Hull Upgrades skill auto-trained from level 4 to 5 (that's more than 400k skill points), all within 2 weeks when I started doing agent missions and switching my good modules between an indy and a cruiser a lot. I never figured out exactly how it worked though.

cargo expanders and overdrives run hull upgrades.
the thing is, you dont see the update until you relog.

That's strange. There was a heated debate on this topic on help channel couple of weeks ago and a Polaris went to ask about it from a dev person who said that the auto-training is quite intentional. ----- Sable's Ammo Shop at Alentene 5, Moon 4, Duvolle Laboratories Factory. Never assume someone actually knows the game because he's a GM. Eve's GMs are from a firm hired by CCP and don't seem to be very good at what they do. From what I've heared from petitions they are usually doing that what's easiest or in whoever who is crying the loudest favour.
There may be some who have actually a clue of the game, but it seems to me the maiority will tell you either that the sky is yellow or green. The GMs regulary contradict each other with their answers.

a lot of skills can be trained by using items or equiping items. I kept track of my skills over the weekend and used the knowledge i acquired and gained about 150.000 skillpoints without training. I must say mechanic alone was about 100.000 of those points :)

To my experience, it's the act of looking that kills the cat...
Let me explain. Lets say you are doing something that should give you free points in some skill. Like using your afterburners. I don't know more than anyone how many or how fast or even excactly how you gain points in such skills. But let's say, one day you use your afterburners a lot and when you check your charactersheet before loggin off you see you have gained, say 200 points in the skill (that was just some random number...). The next day, you try to do the excact same thing. You use your afterburners, but this time you try monitoring the gain of skillpoints. After your first check (increase by say 30 points) nothing happens. It just doesn't train, even though you are doing the excact same things as the day before. Jumping, docking, even relogging doesn't change that. So what actually happened is that when you CHECKED how much you had gained already (opened characersheet) you froze any further auto-training for the day.
I think this is what's happening to me, hope it helps someone understand how this autotrain thingy works...

what happens is that your character sheet only updates once per session, and then any skills which you train update also. so the first time you open your charsheet, thats pretty much how it stays until you relog again.
