Here's an idea for a new ship class...
Heavy Artillery Ships
Battleship-sized ship with a single high slot for fitting a capital-class turret.
The ship would have extreme range (300km+), very slow targetting, long reload time, and would have the shields/armor/hull of a cruiser. The ships would be very slow to deploy, and would be escorted with the utmost care. The damage output could be roughly the same as a single Dread shot, but the very long reload time and low armor would leave such a ship open to attack from frigates or anything else fast enough to get through. The ships could have kind of a "siege mode" but with a much slower cycle time to add to it's mobility.
Caldari would most likely use a Hybrid turret instead of torps, since a ship could easily warp out when targetted... Or maybe that's why it's a good idea to give the Caldari something that sucks for once? :)

mmhm delicious. i would disagree with the idea of giving them cruiser hp though. I would rather see them with larger hp, but fodder resists. - - - -

dood, you went MC? niiiiice, sure you'll have a blast.
i like the idea. would have to say, why not give it two turrets? and 300km is outside of the combat grid.
oh, and you better give it a tracking bonus so it can hit my Nano-glfur 
outside of that, i love the idea. no reason to not have some cool, restricted role ships for the empire combat. anything that adds something fun and new to POS warfare is welcome

Well the size combat grid would obviously have to be increased :)
The range should be long enough that they can sit outside POS range and bombard the crap out of it, but having only one or two turrets with a firing rate 1/3rd the speed of a Dread, a large number would be required to take down any POS.

the "siege launcher" like it was originaly designed was supposed to be a siege weapon like you describe it. Ultraslow firingrate and missilevelocity, "designed for extended siege engagements" like it was once in the description. The bad thing back then was, that POS warfare did not yet exist and the siege launcher was adapted to be at least of some use for PvP, since Sieges of stationary defensive structures did not yet exist.
The Javelin Torps had a flightrange of up to 370-380 km range before Kali hit the Server. The only thing limiting the range was the lockingrangemaximum of 250km. When slowly tech2 and sensorboosters/tech2 ammo hit the market, the weapon/lockingrange of POS guns was increased to 250-330km, to make it impossible to shoot a POS without usage of siegeweapons/capitals. Since the RavenŠs Siegelaunchers locking range was also limited to 250km, it never had the chance to be realized as a siege weapon. Gamemechanics simply didnŠt develop in the "siege" launchers initial concepts benefit.
50 Ravens @ 250km to a POS do as much damage as 10-20 Dreads at closerange afaik.
