A while back someone told me that if you can get your missiles to travel faster than 7500m/s that defenders won't catch them.
With a raven/cnr, with battleship 5, missile projection 5 and an implant, cruise can reach these speeds(easier with the new rigs). Does anyone have any first hand experience with this?

mine got 7700m/s and the npc defenders hit and blow my missiles up on occasion, so it wrong, but it does help having faster missiles as less defenders can be launched and the defenders have less time to get ur missile

Load defenders into that same launcher and check the speeds. Defenders can get over 10km/s pretty easily, and over 15km/s with bonuses.

i thought the only launcher you should put defenders in was a rocket launcher from the like ~4sec launch time

It's not about making your missiles "uncatchable", but actually about having a wider gap between your ship and your opponents' where defenders won't be fast enough to catch them.
Of course I'm talking about rats. With NPC's, the defender's speed is always the same - and listed, iirc, on places like eveinfo.com. Around 7500m/s as someone already mentioned.
I can't remember exactly, but I wouldn't be too wrong if I said I managed to make defenders miss at ranges of up to 18km. I got MP and Caldari BS at 4, and thus my cruises have a max speed of 7,350m/s - even when still not enough to outrun them.
However, remember missile projection and bombardment @ 5 could come *very* handy with the new, short ranged heavy assaults, and always make a difference when flying a rocket Crow. Managing to remain out of web-range and still able to land hits in such a fragile ship is always a welcome fact :-) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Defenders are still useless and avoiding them is not a big deal for that fact along. NPC defenders don't count, as they launch instantly without lag factored in. Player defenders launch several seconds after the module is activated (like normal missiles) but then they proceed to miss the target and trail behind at the same speed of the missile.
So don't worry about defenders ---
