Edited by: CharlieMurphy on 01/12/2006 05:47:43 Edited by: CharlieMurphy on 01/12/2006 05:38:53 i was busy salvaging the other day and i realised that ratting has become even more profitable than it was already
i hear people telling me that not only are they getting rich off the bountys but they also scoop enough loot to recycle into minerals, particularly low ends that they dont need to mine and they make battleships from it and whatever
now to add to that you can salvage from wrecks and make even more isk that way so im thinking... why does mining take so many sp to get really good at and yet it provides so little return compared to ratting which requires about 10% of the training time to be viable
when is mining going to get some love? especially low end bulk extraction type of mining isnt it time to introduce some mining specialisation skills that will seriously increase yeild? and where is the fabled mining capital ? cmon ccp miners need some encouragement
Edit: i would also add that im a honest miner im not a macro miner or any of that sillyness and frankly its a pain in the ass to mine myself enough minerals to build a battleship the way the game is atm there is every encouragement for me to start cheating to mine the low ends cause its so dull now some people are going to tell me to just buy th elow ends but why should i? i trained the mining skills so i shouldnt have to there is an unbalance here against the honest miner

If you go by the numbers mining is better. You have to calculate time in order to see what i'm talking about.
Mining ICE is faster than running around killing rats and then beaming or flying to the container and now salvaging includes atlease 1-2 minutes longer.
The only difference is if you happen to get lucky on a dread drop that sells for 100m +

i just feel that really specialised miners deserve a bit more reward on their skil time and where is that mining capital that has been spoken about ?

A really specialized miner can make more than a ratting character, you just cant do it in empire. If you can refine and manufacture yourself, you can make significantly more as I understand it.

your missing the point tho it takes alot less sp to do it as a ratter and they can still go out and pvp afterwards if somebody has spent the time to learn mining they deserve to have something special just like if somebody pours sp into gunnery atm you dont make much more and your useless at pvp and i think this is really unbalanced

Edited by: Live Eye on 01/12/2006 06:16:29 The money you make from level 3 kill missions is way more than mining in .5 because ore runs out and all you're left with is scord and veld which are worse money than level 2 missions. And I am talking about me mining in a covetor with 1 modulated miner and 2 normal with every possible yield modifier you can get.
If we could mine jaspet solo and haul it solo and manufacture solo there would be no problem but that's not the case. What would be nice is if there were actual mining missions from the darn mining agents that would spawn smaller amounts of low sec ore in high sec. But as it stands it's a corp only activity if you really want to grind out the isk...
Live Eye
PS- And yeah it took me around 2 months to get up to covetor. I'm not sorry I did it just because being in a covetor is a nice thing if I'm ever in a corp that actually mines but there's not much reason to do anything solo with it.

The biggest problem I have with mining is that it takes 3 accounts to be viable.

yeah it does take more then 1 but compare mining some really nice ore in 0.0 to the ratter thats popping triple bs spawns he is making almost as much isk/more depending on what your mining and then to add to that if they actually bother to collect the loot they get a great big chunk of low end minerals why is it worth getting the mining skills in a situation like that?
mining needs a yeild boost and i wouldnt complain it there was some new skills to learn but it really needs a bit of a buff

CCP did not even give us a rig for our shps. Seems they put in a rig for everything but minning. Whats up with that?

Quite honestly I wouldn't use mining rigs even if they put them in. Repackaging barges is the main way of getting your hauling ship and barge at the right place without taking more than twice as long. The main problem with rigs is the repackage deal. Unplugging serves no purpose other than to upgrade implants, repackaging serves many secondary purposes that are now nullified due to the use of rigs. Bummer...

hmmm interesting point i had acually planned to fit shield and cap charge rigs to my hulk in the hope it would free up my lows for mining upgrades or perhaps even mining drone rig?
but with warp to 0 and now you dont even need instas i think moving 1 system isnt a huge problem

we need capital mining platforms for both .0 and for empire .... also roid respawning and the amount that goes into each roid per day needs to be looked at...current amounts were fine when there were about 5k ppl on at peak times but now its 25k to 30k at peak times with the same amount of resources. __________

I agree with this, i was around some empire belts today and man were those empty, .6/.5 looked completely empty of roids, pls adress this issue. and i agree with the contents of this thread.
but i also see the danger of tweaking mining as it is a delicate thing to unbalance

If you are in an Alliance that has solid control of some decent 0.0 space you can make a freaking fortune mining (I have seen claims of 80 mil per hour).
For everyone else you are screwed as a miner.
Covetor in hi sec? Say hi to suicide gankers going for your Modulated Strip Miners.
Get a Hulk for that? Sure. A 550 million investment to mine Scord will pay off in what? Depends I guess but the break even point on that is rather steep.
Go low sec? Yeah sure...a miner in low sec is tantamount to suiciding yourself.
Get guards? Ok...split your haul five ways to pay the guards and you are better off mining Scord as far as making money goes and even then it is still a pirate magnet begging for a fight. Risk a 550 mil defensless ship (more with all its mods)? No thank you.

Player decide mineral prices, it you can mine more mineral prices will drop more. Also mining in 0.0 you can make 100 mill an hour easy, ratting well not so easy unless you get lucky. And to rat in Empire is a joke just like mining in Empire is a joke there is no risk there should be no reward.
Also ratting I can't go AFK for 3min at a time and keep making isk. If anything PVP needs the love . . . ----------

You know... I disagree with you to a point... the point being that I understand where you're coming from... But here's my view on this...
People who use their guns and their "guts" to go into battle should get more money than those who mine roids... now I did the quotations on guts cause NPC killing is no where near as gutty as PVPing... and often times you make little to no money pvping... which sucks... but Revalation is suposed to change that... Which is cool...
So I believe the order of profitability should be something like this...
Mining -> NPCing -> PVPing
Risk of loss:
Small -> Medium -> Large
Makes sense to me!

lets be honest tho assuming that you dont get jumped by a roaming gang or something both ratting and mining are 100% risk free once you have the skills and the skills required to rat are alot less than the skills needed to mine mining in bs doesnt count

Show me your skill list for a miner... then show me your skill list for a lvl 4 solo-er...
Because from my unresearched point of view... I think that they're about the same.
PVPers aside because now that scan probes are AMAZING <3 both miners and NPCers are easily found. Ratting is more dangerous than mining. (not that ratting is hard for me *cough*)

Edited by: Thor Xian on 01/12/2006 07:41:22 I haven't been a miner since jetcan mining was the way you had to do it to make it worth the time.
I abhor jetcan mining. Why can't a mining ship just store 100k m3 in the hold?
I might go back to mining if CCP introduced a ship that had a special orehold that held maybe 250k m3 worth of ore. Make it slow, make it tank about as good as a BC. Hell it wouldn't even have to use Strip Miners. Make them low sec only, I don't care. Just take the requirement to jetcan mine out.
Something like:
Capital Driller Requires Adv Spaceship Command 5 and Mining Barge 5
ORE - Excavator 6/6/6 (0 turrets/0 Launchers)
10% Boost to Strip Miner Optimal Range and Orehold Capacity per Capital Driller level
1,000 m3 base Cargo 200,000 m3 base Orehold 200 m3 Dronebay 40 m/s
Price it around 1 BN.
If that came out, I'd probably reconsider my diehard no mining stance.

Edited by: CharlieMurphy on 01/12/2006 07:41:34 sounds like a good capital miner tbh doesnt need the huge dronebay but while im on the subject omg stip miners and ice miners need a range buff
btw you do realise a hulk has 8000m3 cargo ?
Edit: ah i see ore hold

So true.. low sec mining is Stupid risky compared to low sec ratting

Even with a great Defence squad ive had Prats so keen to pop my barge that they ignore my defence and gun straight for me knowing that ill pop before any of my team can help.

might i make a small suggestion
in all the descriptions and the whole idea of mining is the idea of finding a mother lode, why not introduce something like this to the game, maybe in low sec in say 1 in every 50 belts one mercoxite roid could spawn
ok so that a bit odd there must be a more subtle way to do it at the mo
bassically mining needs something to make minute 1 different from minute 2 and hour 1 different from hour 2
miners should be out hunting for 'the big one' not staring in bordom at the same belt for 4 hours.
think about it ratting gets random commander spawns and missions get offers why shouldn't mining have some kind of random element that adds some spice to it

Edited by: James Duar on 01/12/2006 08:30:42 I'm sorry but it is complete BS that ratting is more risky then mining compared to the rewards. It is 10,000 times easier to rat safely then it is to mine safely in something like a Covetor, and I know this because I do both in low-sec and 0.0.
Barge's should have their tanking abilities increased enormously, because for the amount of time you have to invest to get one they still suck in 90% of low-sec and 0.0 compared to a battleship which can rat all day and tank multiple NPC battleship spawns.
EDIT: Also salazarr is on the right track. If mining was made to be more about exploring for the best ore rather then brute yield then it would be both interesting and profitable. Then again, I haven't yet to checked exploration results so it'll be interesting to see if that gives me what I want from it.
