Quote: Hi everyone Just to inform you that all non essential internet use will be blocked from sometime today or at the latest by the start of next week. HR and TAC are already blocked. I myself personally will be blocked at the weekend in morning at this announcement. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated and forwarded to the Comms meeting on Monday. Many thanks
Thats a **** message to get on a friday, I thought I'd share my displeasure.

If they're using websense, use the following URL as www.eve-online.com is blocked, but http://myeve.eve-online.com/ is not.

Save a cookie now to log in, that's how I get in in work and without the cookie I cannot log in.
Last time I cleared it by accident I had to wait until there was a power cut and get logged in as quickly as possible while the WS was down to get a new cookie :)

Be happy that didn't come with a written warning for using company's resources for personal purposes (such as, say playing EVE on your work computer while your boss walked in and you couldn't alt+tab out of it quickly enough because the ****ed thing just decided to freeze on your ass... God, that sucked!)
:) But yeah, I agree, being censored isn't fun. Stories. |

I do computer consulting, and I have had business's ask me to set them up so that employeeÆs can only do WORK related things on the internet. I take great pleasure in making people DO WHAT THEY ARE BEING PAID TO BE DOING instead of goofing around on the internet.
The employee's don't like me, but when they give me a hard time, they get screwed. I had a business where one of their employee's put nails under all of my four tires on my car, unfortunately for him, I saw him doing it.
He got fired, based on my word alone. After that, the other employee's at that business don't give me any problems whatsoever.
Primarily, I setup key loggers on the machines, and block all instant messaging programs (corporation uses a special local messaging system to communicate between employees), so if an employee DID get around anything, or even TRIED to get around anything, the boss would find out.
Your boss pays you to work, not play games. Quit trying to get around their security methods and do what you are being paid to do.

Oh get over yourself. You're the big man eh?
The OP stated that they couldn't browse the forum, not play the game .
These same companies that frown on game forums are probably OK about their staff mooning around on eBay or shopping websites. Go figure.

Seriously. If a company have a internet connection and computers for the use in your work and a deal where they don't pay for trafic. What do they lose if you use the computer you have to do personal stuff on the net while you still do your job. In all the jobs I have had there have been alot of spare time. I can do what ever I want as long it doesn't affect my work effort. If I don't do my job I get fired. If I do My job don't bother too much with what I do with my working spare time.
I say Personal freedom under personal responsibility.

What you don't realise is for the majority of companies there are people who sit on their arse and don't do anything all day. Meanwhile other people are worked ragged. Having been in a company where a colleague and I were frequently pulling 30 hrs extra a week unpaid to keep up while a lazy sack of **** didn't do anything but browse forums I can tell you it is slightly annoying.
It's drilling btw, you tend to have to put in the extra hours.
In am manual labour job, such as a trade you would wither get the **** kicked out you for not working, or fired. People seem to think that because they have internet access they don't have to work.

Edited by: Valan on 03/12/2006 16:19:41 I'm with the last guy. At my place when someone is surfing it usually means I'm working my arse off.
I have access to the proxy so we check the latest popular sites. If they're not work related we block them. If I find a user who's internet usage is stupidly high I send HR an e-mail. They may not always get sacked but at least their bonus will be hit.
EDIT : I would just like to add this is an e-brokers and we pay for bandwidth for trading. If they miss a trade because some idiot is downloading a you tube vid then there is hell to pay.

Key logger on their computer....im sure thats a breach of privacy
Anyway, I work in tech support and work at a computer all day. Im one of the few with internet access but the others borrow my access. The job is ok, and pay's ok, but the only thing stopping me from going mad is the ability for me to access the internet. If they removed that access, i will definately leave, and im sure a load of other will leave too.
I dont abuse the access, but there is a lot of waiting time when im stuck on the phone, i guess they realise that, which is why they havent stopped it yet |

We all have a surf, but the idle and the useless abuse the system.
As for monitoring computer usage they can do what ever they want. It's not a breach of privacy, although you're probably in breach of contract. I would say vitually every company has a computer misuse policy in the small print.
A large company I used to work for, gave a written warning for receiving a joke e-mail. Because company policy said that the correct response was to reply asking the sender not to send anymore jokes. The message wasn't sent, the joke wasn't deleted, in breach of contract, warning issued. Tell that to your hungry kids when you're on the dole.
So I suggest if you have access don't abuse it, do what you're paid for. The company won't have to ***** down and you get to buy your children Christmas presents :)

If its a computer that stays in work. That remains in work. And has been bought and purchased by the work place for their hired worker to use. The workplace can do whatever they like to their pc as they will own all property on it. I do believe there was an Intellectural property case in the UK either last or 2 years ago where someone's novel that they printed at their work place was cached and then reprinted and distrubuted among the employees.
The case basically debated whether it was his property or the companies since it was stored on their PCs and the properties of the document reported it as belonging to the company. Man I'm gonna have to look that up now. I don't think it came to any conclusion as it may have been settled out of court. --------------

And ppl like you make me shiver. There's other methods to see if someone's doing a good job.

Erm i think maybe you need to actually read my post. you seem to have fixated on the part about improvised cosmetic surgery. We do our job, we do our job very well, otherwise we wouldn't have said job. Hence guarding any freetime we manage to acquire. We get little ****s from the office's trying to score brownie points by telling managers that they've seen someone drinking a cup of tea outside of an allocated break. One cup of ******* tea.
So dont give me your bull****. The fault may not entirely lay with you because if their employees arent working they should just issue an official warning and then sack them if they continue. Hiring someone to actualy come and give him the ability to spy on everything his employees do is just ******* wrong.

Interesting topic. But keyloggers are breach of privacy over here... that you can be sure off. ( so is reading my mail to see if it's work related, and so is watching what I browse... )

Edited by: Valan on 05/12/2006 17:30:00 Its backwards here. We can spy on people and sack them for computer misuse. But its difficult to sack someone who is useless! From what I gather in the US spying is illegal but I think its easier to sack an idiot, is that correct?
So the computer misuse thing is a good excuse to get rid of the useless. I've never seen it used against a valuable employee. Unless they've looked at something really bad.

Not when your using:
Your bosses computer. Your bosses internet connection. Your bosses TIME. Your bosses MONEY.
Since it's his equipment, and he's paying you, he has a right to know if he's really paying you to talk with friends on AIM and visit **** sites, or to do your work.

hey there,
Just got round to reading all your replies.
To all the chaps that told me to work in work, that is none of your concern. I came here looking for advice not to hear you display how noble you are. As this contributes nothing to the objective of the thread.
