Edited by: Adrian Kerensky on 01/12/2006 15:24:06 Edited by: Adrian Kerensky on 01/12/2006 15:11:54 Edited by: Adrian Kerensky on 01/12/2006 14:54:51 At the moment carriers don't really have a role other than assigning fighters from safe spots, and as we all know capitals are pretty easy to take down when on the front lines of combat.
The primary roles of carriers are as support ships. With the new gang overhaul I started to think about other uses for carriers, perhaps not on the front line but still playing a hugely important role in front line combat.
As you all know (and love?), with the new seemless map we can zoom out not just into the universe map but also into a smaller system map; a 3D representation of the system we are in in much greater detail than the old system scanner radar map. Stations, planets, moons, gates all show up in a much clearer way, with staions and gates being labelled.
What if they combined this system map with the use of carriers for a much more detailed version. Let me explain:
My idea is that when piloting a carrier in space and you zoom out into the system map, the locations of your gang mates in system and all hostiles they can see are superimposed onto the map.
The current new gang support controls can then be slightly modified to allow carrier pilots to take command of the battlefield from the system map. Calling visible hostile targets for fleets from the system map without having to be present in the battle and completely lagged out.
Readouts of highlighted hostile ships (ship type, name, etc...) could be shown allowing accurate target calling for fleet combat. A carrier pilot could select gang members on the map and call targts for them in an RTS style of way by clicking on hostile targets, making the primary target icon appear on a hostile for them, in the same way a gang leader can currently make his selected target primary with a target icon on them.
Calls for armour and energy support could be shown as icons over gang members on the system map allowing the carrier pilot to select fleet support ships and show them who needs support.
This would also mean that carriers in safespots need to be protected since when in system map view they cannot warp around safe spots or see the overview, they sacrafice safety for a massive battlefield advantage.
I think that whilst this would most likely take a hell of a lot of work to accomplish, it would be extremely worthwhile adition to EVE fleet and capital combat, giving carriers a proper frontline battlefield role.
Your thoughts, flames, suggestions?
[EDIT] 1. Think of the tactical map in Homeworld 2 but for carriers in EVE. 2. It is not unreasonable to think that a carrier would know the position of it's gang members, afterall it must know their positions for the fighters to know where to warp to, and our systems must know the co-ordinates of our gang members for us to warp to them. 3. Carrier pilots could right click on gang members on system map in order to assign fighters as well as using the gang menu on the overview?

Thats a great idea, imo that kind of tactical view shouldn't just be for carrier pilots although I agree it woould suit a carriers playstyle well.
Maybe even involve data from scan probes and stuff too to expand the data available to the commander?
This would be a great next evolution to the new gang system.

I dont think carriers are that easy to kill anymore.. didnt they just get a 400 percent hp boost with this last patch?

This just means they die four times slower. Unfortunately a lone carrier when faced by a fleet goes down much quicker than one would think, remember they cannot enter siege mode for massive tanking abilities like dreads can.

Great idea imo... tbh I've wanted the same for quite some time... definately a carrier only perk, makes them more than just extra firepower and considering the new gang system and system map as was pointed out, half the work is already done. Carriers can even use gang assist modules so surely they were designed with commanding in mind.

I like the idea but I find that most of the information on the system map makes for a crouded and messy look. I have to turn most of it off to enjoy the look and feel of the map. If there were a way for Carriers to have a mix between the close up map and they system map... kinda inbetween the two zooms... I think it would both look nice and be useful.
Just an add... but with the Voice chat integrated into the map aswell... that'd make for a pretty awesome map...! Watching people talk and ordering them around and stuff... haha... would be pretty cool.
