as seen here, Ryzom's owner Nevrax is going under, and people are looking to buy it out and turn it open source.
Personally*, I think it would be a great acquisition for CCP, it could be a huge leap forward in terms of re-using technology, or it could be a great white elephant.
What do you think?
*Note - I've not played it, I don't know what the code is like, what the gameplay is like, or whether or not it could be easily adapted.

All I remember about the beta is that it took me about thirteen seconds to put down the game once I had created my character

I tried the trial and lasted slightly longer than 13 seconds, but I wasn't that interested to begin with. I've heard alot of good things about it, and the ryzom ring is supposed to have uber potential. I'm sure someone will pick it up, but I doubt they open source it. It's my understanding that they've given existing subscribers a free month while they sort things out. Personally I'd rather see ccp start from scratch, but if they were to pick up a game thats already on the market Ryzom would probally be a good match.
So far as the gameplay, it's kind of a sketchy interface, I could barley figure out how to get around, but like I said, I really just wanted to see what it looked like, did no real "how to play" research or anything.

I gave the trial a go. The interface was a nightmare, character creation was a joke. The game didn't show enough promise for me to decipher what was going on.

I followed the development closely, and hoped it became all that it promised. But the open beta drove me away.

Yeah, I'll bet it had some awesome ideas, and great mechanics, and story etc.... but it completely failed at drawing you in from the get go. Which is a shame really.
