About the middle of september i had a friend convince me to join up with eve. I figgure, sure, what the heck, its cool looking and less demanding than WOW, and the populace is generaly mature. so i start playing, mess around with skills for a while, and then Revelations comes out. Basicly, as of tuesday i had about 1 mill SP... only 200,000 more SP than someone who started up right with Revelations. So im asking- did I start at the worst time possible? i like this character ( fun to RP with) so i think imma keep him, just asking for your opinions -Kantos

Unfortunate because you had to pay for a month for sp they were gonna hand you anyways, BUT the experience you earned in playing the game is invaluble. So no, its not a waste :p

well first off i dont think eve is less demanding then wow ;p but i guess its how u play it ;p it could be i guess not always ><
mmm i think this is the best possible time actually, sure new people start close to you but so what? you still have your sp ;p us "veterans" have had our sp advantage being chipped at for ages ;p
advanced learning skills better implants
all of em let newer ppl catch up to you ;p but i dont worry to much about sp just train what i want to do.
and as an upside u dont have to relearn to much since u didnt learn it all in the beginning! ;p ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)

Yeah i'm actually in a similar position to him, had chars for 2 years, sold em lent money to friends and quit... then it happened.... Eve sucked me back in >.< Now i've started a month ago and struggling along with low sp but its all worth it, this game just rocks too much to quit. Even though i've gone from a char from 30+ mill sp to 1 mill now >.> i'm not annoyed that they did this to new char's, its just designed to make the new player experience more fun. Good on them.

Better than my position:
I stopped training my main to train up an alt character and had earned about a million SP with it (meh - including 2 learning skills to level 5). I could have delayed starting the alt, avoided level 5 learning skills and earned well over a million extra SP on my main had we known CCP.

in a fashion, you did, but EVE is not about SP in the same way WoW and similar MMOs are about levels.

I am in exactly the same predicament as far as SP goes; I've been playing a while and was just passing 1mil when revelations came out and started giving 800k SP to new characters and alts. I don't regret it in the slightest though, as with my experience I'll sooner be a functional pilot than they will even with their SP advantage, and I still had fun getting this far even if it does feel like kind of a gip. This all works in my favor though, as now I can rescue my friend from WoW and his new eve character won't be too far behind mine, and I'll be comfortable enough with the game to explain a smidge of it as we progress.

I don't regret creating my character a while before kali - I had the time to enjoy Eve when it was the most unforgiving to newbies , always having to cross 15 km to reach the safety of a station or stargate. Now that it's so much easier to elude chasers , you won't experience doom at the hands of players as intensely - part of the masochistic pleasure of Eve is gone

well id say it was a good time as now you can create 2 alts with good starter skills, maybe a miner , or a hauler, or a npcer...whatever you want.
numerous people complain abiout characters now starting with more sp when they can clearly benefit from it themselves.
i dont understand

The game is not about collecting skill points.

I dont think there is ever a 'good' time to join eve, being a noob in eve means there is everything against you and not much for you. Scammers everywhere!

Edited by: Shameless Avenger on 02/12/2006 10:06:59 Edited by: Shameless Avenger on 02/12/2006 10:05:52 The OP has a valid point. He's been waiting a long time (and yeah, a month in eve IS a long time) for his SP and now new characters are very very close to him. He has a legitimate inrevocable right to whine about it.
However, there may be some CCP loving for your character. I believe I read a dev post not long ago saying that new characters created 30 days before revelations will get some kind of SP voucher. I'm going to look for that post and will update here if I find it.
EDIT: to add the information mentioned.
I found the blog, I was mistaken about the 30 days. What it says is that characters with less than 800k SP were going to be "compensated". Anyways, it's all here. |
