The Battle of Bagodan - Charge of the Heavy Brigade
Whilst on tactical manoeuvres in Sarum Prime with Events from my wing I received a sub space message from Excs from Imperial Dreams corp a fellow member of the CVA alliance of loyal Amarrian Corps.
I had spent the whole day with PIE Inc colleagues and other anti-pirate corps patrolling Sarum Prime and keeping it safe for passing traders. The pirates had kept a very low profile - which is what they tend to do when anyone demonstrates a willingness to fight them. Traders had been passing through Sarum safely all day and the few pirates that had shown up had quickly fled. I was slightly bored so was pleased when my comm system beeped...
The message from eXcs was simple - "We have pirates in Bagodan - many pirates". As it was so quiet I decided to take myself along for a look along with my colleague Events who was testing his new ship - Event Horizon. I gave the orders for Events to follow at best speed to Bogodan.
When arriving in the system I noticed that many of the usual Sarum Prime suspects were here - obviously the regular patrols of Sarum were disrupting their piracy and forcing them onto fresh, and hopefully less profitable, pastures. I regrouped with eXcs at a local station and when he arrived we warped to next station along. We came out of warp to be greeted with threat icons flashing like crazy - not one, not two, but five pirate ships outside a station.
I nearly wept for joy at such a sight. The orders where given to attack azz (the CEO of Merc Cruisers) all guns locked and we got off one volley which killed 50% of her shields before she jumped into warp. The next target along in the scanner was a lowly pirate, I cannot even remember his name. All weapons opened fire but an error on the computer targeting system had selected a pirate of low rank a mere -2.0.
With prompt and swift vengeance the pirate base's sentry guns opened up onto the hull of my ship the Apocalipso. I had to leave as the sentry guns were stripping my shields. I contacted Events and asked his status he was holding out but jammed came the reply. eXcs was contacted next. He was heading out of range of the sentry guns so we could reform and open fire on the enemy without the threat of fire from the dreaded guns.
The order went out to regroup and rethink as we were now outnumbered and at a tactical disadvantage. At this point Aralis CEO of Imperial Dreams came back from his duties and joined our fleet whilst Collinsimo a recent PIE recruit came into the system - giving us a total of five fine Amarrian battleships.
We could not warp in and engage the pirates directly as the sentry guns would open up on us, and the pirates had cunningly positioned themselves outside the range of the guns. It was decided to warp in to the station and check the lay of the land - to use an ancient term.
The fleet warped in 20k from the station and 60km from the enemy. The pirates quickly jammed and locked onto targets and opened up. At this point eXcs ship forged ahead with Aralis close behind and we charged into battle. Initiially the battle was one sided. We were still within range of the sentry guns so could not open fire and the enemy were pouring their missiles and torps onto eXcs and Aralis.
Onward and forward we charged through the hail of enemy fire still unable to respond due to the pirates devious tactics. Eventually Events risked a shot even though we were still in the theoretical range of the sentry guns. The Tachyon beam hit home and the sentry guns did not react. The order was given to open fire!
I opened up on a target wiping away half of his shields in one salvo and Aralis, Excs, Collinsimo all followed suit. Pride filled my heart as the pirates who had been happy to sit and pour fire on us while we could not shoot back began to take a battering and one by one warped out. Their blockade was broken!
Unfortunately my happiness did not last. Later that evening the pirates called up reinforcements. We now faced 5 battleships and 3 cruisers and one of our pilots had been called away to deal with pressing business elsewhere. Three of us were trapped at a station by the 8-strong pirate fleet and only eXcs remain at large in the system.
In a heroic move eXcs warped in on his own to engage the pirates. This allowed myself and Aralis to escape the pirates clutches(Collinsimo unfortunately got stuck on the station and had to dock). As soon as I got away I warped back to eXcs in the hope that the fight was still ongoing and that I could provide backup. Aralis couldn't join me as an onboard computer problem was preventing him from warping to his gang members.

Edited by: cold lazarus on 17/11/2003 08:45:47 Unfortunately, I was too late. eXcs had paid the ultimate price for heroically helping his colleagues escape the pirate trap. He had gone down fighting against the pirate fleet. It was a brave sacrifice which in my mind epitomises the Amarr fighting spirit.
My solace is that, while these pirates were spending time dealing with us, innocent travellers were able to pass through the system unmolested by the pirates. This loss simply reinforces our determination to combat the pirate menace and drive them from Amarr space. PIE salutes eXcs of Imperial Dreams for his bravery!

As I recall, I do not know for sure, but I think we were outnumbered technology wise. There was Bandit, Jhered, Frak, and I against Cold L, eXcs, Event, and collismo. All of you were in battleships while we only had three battleships, and a thorax. Also, that shows the Bloody Hands unity that makes us impenatrable. If you anti-pirates were more unified you wouldn't of had eXcs fending for himself while the rest of you were 50km away. I think you guys need to go back to Amarr Imperial School in Sarum and learn some more about formations and such. Twas still a good skirmish, I am looking forward to more FAIR battles in the future. -Nitro G

Edited by: Avon on 21/11/2003 11:17:39 I decided to proceed with the demonstration, thinking the combatants were aware of my (faulty) beacons and so outside of my live fire zone.
Salvo after salvo of torpedoes were launched, interspersed with cruise missiles to make the firework display more colourful. Suddenly I was aware that the flight path of my ordinance was going to intercept that of eXcs ship. Alarmed I tried to self-destruct the weapons, but then realised that I had removed the abort modules from them to decrease their weight, and admittedly to increase my profit.
Missile after missile slammed into the crumbling hulk of his battleship, eventually causing the structure to collapse. His pod emerged and I felt myself sigh with relief. No point killing your potential customers, often they hold a grudge. But alas, the Infernos were still exploding and eXcs pod was buffeted by shockwaves. It seems unfortunate that he trusted a clone to an inadequate Amarrian pod – it failed, as did his ability to breathe.
I didn’t notice the other PIE ships warp away during this diversion as claimed, they just hung outside the station and watched the destruction of their comrade. I give little credence to their fanciful tale. Maybe if they had taken decisive action to support eXcs then maybe he would still be alive. To this affect I have decided to claim 20mil isk in reparations due to loss of a potential customer. Also, I incurred some cost and inconvenience convincing Concord of the facts of this episode so that they could correctly adjust my security rating. I claim another 10mil isk for the damage done to my reputation.
As a gesture of goodwill I am willing to settle at a compromise figure of 25mil. PIE should make payment directly to me, preferably in small denomination, non-sequential, unmarked bills.

Edited by: Avon on 21/11/2003 10:59:38 What an interesting tale our friends from PIE Corporation present us with. It would seem that they believe the loss of a battleship is some sort of victory, which it might be if it was one of the enemies. I fear for the cause PIE fights for if this is and example of their strategic thinking. Surely losing a ship is a defeat? All my Caldari instincts tell me that a loss is not a good thing.
Now, as it happens, I was just passing through Bagodan on the night in question and happened to witness this great PIE victory first hand. (To be fair I should point out that any involvement I may have had was purely an unfortunate coincidence, as shall become clear later.) News had come to me that miners in the region, honest hard working people, were struggling to find ammunition to fend off pirates from their legitimate operations. Feeling sympathy for the plight of my kindred spirits, and admittedly with the thought of a nice profit too, I set off to Bagodan in my old but trusty Caracal. Admittedly it isn’t really an ideal hauler, but these are troubled times, and it offers some protection where Concord cannot.
After arriving in the system I though I should hold a demonstration of the latest evolution of the Inferno Torpedo. Advertising is after all everything. I placed myself at a safe distance from the miners station and cordoned off a live fire zone with warning beacons. There was no way I could have known that these beacons were faulty, although I should possibly had less trust in an outdated Gallente design.
At this point I assumed the ships gathering around were doing so in order to get a good view of the pyrotechnic display I was about to unleash. The thought did not even cross my mind that these were two fleets of adversaries gathering for combat. If I had known I would have taken an opportunity to sell them ammunition and modules, after all there is nothing like a good fight to bolster sales!
The ship belonging to eXcs seemed to wander too close to the enemy force, and they unleashed an ungodly barrage of unimaginable power towards him. I was nearly distracted by these events, but time was pressing, and time is money.

LOL - Good story...
Few things tho...
1) we never claimed it was a victory - just a demonstration of Amarr bravery in the face of overwhelming odds
2) eXcs is not a PIE pilot
3) you seriously dont think we are going to pay a pirate like you 25 million isk
Good 'angle' anyway. It made me chuckle...

Slanderous!
I feel aggreived by such a suggestion. I am just an honest, hardworking, Caldari trader trying to scrape a living in a hostile universe.
And there I was off letting you off 5mil as a sign of goodwill.
As I see you are unwilling to make this token payment towards my inconvenience I shall have to feed my kids protein delicacies for the next month and limit my wife to only 1000 new pairs of shoes over the next week.
If my marriage ends due to these unbearable circumstances you shall be hearing from my lawyer. ______________________________________________

You miss the point, Caldari.
Of course we could have been posting our successes and those only, but sometimes the situation which shows true spirit is one where one faces a loss.

Edited by: Avon on 22/11/2003 08:03:10 Ah, if it had happened as originally claimed I would have to agree, but:
Quote: I didnĘt notice the other PIE ships warp away during this diversion as claimed, they just hung outside the station and watched the destruction of their comrade. I give little credence to their fanciful tale.
It was not a clever diversion. No ships warped away during the incident. They just sat and watched in horror as eXcs was blown to atoms.
It seems unfortunate that the weakest of Amarrians have to fabricate stories so that their peers will respect them.
The truth of the story is that eXcs was, without doubt, brave and courageous (read reckless and misguided). Unfortunately the pilots from PIE corp were nothing but cowards. They were too afraid to help. Pure cowardice. I find it likely that if they had moved to engage the battle would have been abandoned by the evil pirate forces. Worse still, I feel eXcs was betrayed. He probably engaged believing he would not be alone, but was stabbed in the back.
The overall view given to me of Amarrians by this event is not one of 'Amarr power and Bravery', but rather one of betrayal and cowardice.
I thought the Amarrians truely brave and formidable warriors, but it would seem they have become soft and untruthful. I think the former Emperor has a lot to answer for. His reign of peace has turned his subjects yellow and weak. ______________________________________________

All flameing is done in character. Now that deserves respect.
Regardless of the outcome or the circumstances of victory or loss. It was obviously a PIE in the face to all of theose in EVE who believe that the game has been nurfed.
PIE has indeed delivered decicive blows to us in the past and they have been wonderful opponents. So have EVE Marshals btw and I feel the same about them. Good Work Ladies & Gentlemen.
All I ask is that we keep it in character and keep finding ways to make this a better game for all.

Normally I would not be inclined to side with Amarrians, but in this case I feel I must, for what the Caldari are doing is not right. PIE has said that excs was brave and indeed he was. He was apparently trying to give them an opportunity to escape...whether they took that opportunity is not the issue. The issue is the show of bravery and corage a pilot showed in the face of overwhelming odds. You can not deny that he didnt show bravery... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
