What happened to Mines and Mine Launchers? I just re-joined the EVE community a few days before kali and last time I played before that was around Exodus... I just remembered that there were mines back then that you could lay around... what happened to them? Were they removed alltogether because they were causing too much lag?

Yes.
I'd like to see them back as a drone bay / drone control item, which would keep them to a reasonable level of lagitude and still be cool.

Yes that'd be cool! This could be used to defent player owned stations or mining operations. You wouldn't be able to deploy them near gates or NPC stations, and you'd have a limit of how many mines you can lay a certain radius as well to prevent people volunteerly creating lag like we used to see back in the days (remember the container/mine lag fest at gates?)

And that's precisely the sort of rubbish I detest - arbitrary limits. Deployable anywhere, thanks, and if it is drone bay/control limited further limits would be both arbitrary and annoying.

If mines come back they'll be in the form of a weapon useable only on specifc ships most likely it was dicussed a while back iirc... as a possible role for t2 destroyers but well interdictors are more important. There would have to be a system in place so that they can't be used without you being on grid amoungst a whole boat load of issues...

I didn't play when mines were actually in game, but I always heard they were removed because people would dump hundreds on a gate and cause huge lag.

Well yea. Again, why they would work as small clouds tied to drone bays...

In my opinion, at this moment, launching lone mines (in their current design) aren't useful at all. As instead I'd see something working like this :
1) You should "launch" (then, deploy) a field of mines which can affect an area. This is the aim of mines. Incidentally, it helps to manage the lag : I assume it's less server-side calculations and server-client data exchanges about distances from the mines and positions of a large number of it (among others things). There is a single delimited area (think about gas clouds ?) where the ship take some damages, you are either in or out the "cloud" of mines. Simple.
2) Allow the deployment only in corp / alliance controlled spaces and under various limitations to avoid abuses and/or imbalance. Anyway, setting up a mines field isn't something you do in 5 minutes, it take time and the logistic of an organization. Deploying a mines field can need a downtime to be effective (like an outpost), remember you can have to maintain the field effective too, depending of the number of hostile / neutral ships passing by, for example.
3) Inoffensive for corp/alliance owners and their allies by standing (activation when the ship' identity isn't allowed to pass through).
If used this way (or close to this), maybe it would add something nice to the game (about territory claiming for example). But it can strongly affect the gameplay. It would decloak the cloaked scouts for example (area damages). It's both a good and bad change in this regard, hence the need for the deployment to be controlled by some means. _____________ Finicky diplomat. Taciturn explorer. Faithful ally. |

And again, they'd be annoying special-case items used to lag out blobs rather than another generally useful item and an interesting drone-bay item. Agenda, agenda..
