So there I was, mining away in highsec. Someone came along and started mining too, but since I fly a Hulk, I can clear a belt pretty fast.
I went home, switched out my Hulk for a battleship, went back and stuck his ore into a new can. He shot at me. I destroyed his Retriever.
He said that he was going to petition and I'd be banned by tomorrow for griefing. Is this not allowed?

nothing bannable happened, no griefing happened. You nicked his ore and challenged him by doing so, he was then stupid enough to shoot you as you were flagged to him, that gave you the option of shooting back.
He has himself to blame.

Unless he has it disabled, he's supposed to get a spiffy warning message that tells him you can fire back.
Not your fault he decided to disregard warnings -----

Not quite true if you do something serious enough you can get insta ban.
However the OP is taking the mick for some strange reason, as you will see he's a seasoned player and well knows you don't get banned for playing the game as it was designed.

Curzon seems to recently have made a string of posts about varying subjects all serious.
Hes in an NPC corp.
You think hes feeling OK?
Im hoping hes not suffering from amnesia
Oh on a totally unrelated subject. It would always be good adive to tell someone that you transfer a character too, not to make any posts on eve forums until they understand the game.

Well, imho you ARE a griefer, not because you took the ore which under the circumstances is just an cowardish act (why did you change ships at all? Provoking a retriever in a BS is like a 20 year old stealing a 3 year olds teddy), but because you just jumped into your BS to cause emotional pain = griefer. Don't worry, you won't be punished by CCP because they just don't get their act together in this (jet cans, stealing) respect. But it's a good lesson for the kids, you can do whatever you want as long as you're stronger than the other.

Answer: So he could take the ore. He wanted to keep the other player out of the belt. Nothing wrong in Eve with trying to secure your resources. What you can keep from others is yours.

No, you've got it wrong. The person who came into the belt and started mining was the one causing emotional pain and griefing by stealing his asteroids!! Do you honestly think its right that you should just be able to fly into a belt someone else is mining, not ask permission to mine and then not expect any consequences?

Griefing? Hell no. You were eliminating competition, this is a PvP game. You used the mechanics of the game fairly and tactfully. PvP isn't just pirating, it's taking all you can and leaving not even the slightest crumb for your peers in competition to scramble for. Feel good about this.

actuall if you'd have taken his can in your hulk with t2 med drones would have been enough. usually ppl arent THAT stupid and attack a bs...
but hey you managed to kill him so its ok. next time try it with the hulk ^^

You know, in Dune your namesake promoted suicide raids on Harkonnen spice storage . If you're gonna take a name from a well known character then at least be a little more like him, you hardly sound like the feared Master of Assassins. Ultimately the retriever pilot was stupid for firing at a battleship, that's all there was to it.

OMFG I have said some out there thing about pirates in the past but to call this griefing is just silly and shows no real understanding of how the game works.
