I apologize if this has been suggested before.
The skill would allow the user to recover wreckage of destroyed ships to refine for minerals. The skill level would determine the percentage of ship the user recovers.
This could make Pvp'ing and rat farming a viable trade and make the community less dependent on mining as the only way to survive.

I would agree with you IF insurance only paid back as much as the ship was worth MINUS whatever you may be able to salvage, or less, otherwise you'll find a lot of people exploiting this I reckon. So this cheap ship costs to build without any waste: 50,000 isk. You can insure it up to a return of 40,000 isk, no more (80%). You can salvage the destroyed ship for lets say 5,000 isk (10%). There would be 10% - 5,000 isk, left that would not be recovered. I think this would be pretty fair really.

That's a good point. I forget to think of things from the perspective of a potential exploit.
After posting I was trying to think of the payoff and I came up with 20% of ship's value as base for skill. But given the way insurance works, I think 10% makes more sense.
Insurance would need to be tweaked such that platinum insurance + recovery of wreckage with lvl 5 skill would never amount to more than ship is worth so as discourage scammers.
I was trying to come up with a way to make fighting a viable occupation as mining is draining away my sanity. Admittedly, the idea needs work. --------------

Make the wreckage big.... REAL big. Like a floating burnt out hulk that wont fit in a ship. The hulk would go away after a few hours or maybe at the next reset. You have to salvage the hulk with a salvage beam that gives you units of wreckage. Kind of like mining but you are mining the wreckage.
Different size ships would produce a ship hulk of different sizes that give you different amounts of wreckage. When processed the wreakage would not give you more than about 10% of the minerals it costs to build a ship the wreakage came from.
So, it would be possible to "exploit" this but the time involved would make it no different than going out and mining new material.
This all sounds new but the code is already in the game. It's the mining code. A hulk=an asteroid. wreakage = ore salvage beam = mining beam salvage skill = mining skill. It would just take some tweaking to make it all work.
It would be kewl to warp to a gate and see 15 hulks floating around after a big battle and 30 noobs trying to salvage them.

Salvage and repair drones were discussed in beta ... be lovely to see both of them sometime soon.
Gradient is hiring. Read our Code of Conduct before applying.

salvage drones would be very good, but repair drones are something that i would prefer to them if i had to choose.

Salvage drones would collect the wreckage for reprocessing and repair drones would put the ship back together?
If the above is correct, how would we get around insurance scams where the scammer blows his own ship, collects insurance and then puts it back together?
I like the idea, just thinking about how it would work in practice. --------------

koda, that's not what they meant with repair drones... They'll only repair perhaps your own ship (alternative to repair mods) and other drones... So no insurance problems with this.

Got it. That makes more sense. Only part of me that doesn't work during the day is my brain. :) --------------

Edited by: Eisha on 19/11/2003 20:57:20 Maybe insurance should start Identifing people as high and low risk. You make a lot of claims your rates sky rocket, or they just refuse to insure you. It slows down the rate of exploiting.
Getting lower rates should take a lot longer then getting high rates, and should require actually having completed insurance terms without having to make a claim.
