My AMD 2000Mhz (512MB RAM) with GeForce 4 (64Mb) is now showing its age. It's time for an upgrade. Vista is just around the corner and EVE is being developed for DirectX 10. Without spending a fortune, any suggestions on what to buy? Should I wait for DirectX 10 graphics cards?

well, dont get a dualcore prossesor just yet, Eve wont run/run and crash/run real bad, with a dualcore, there are alot of fixes for this thats basicly dont work and ccp has yet to even say there is a problem.
DirectX cards out right now are the 8800 GT/GTX/GTX-XXX, and idf you want to keep it cheap the GT isnt that expensive.
Slam 2gb of ram in there and your about set, maybe a nice soundcard, I would say the creative soundblaster 4.

Dual core is fine, no point in buying last years technology for the same price as this years just to upgrade very quickly after you have purchased. If you do have problems with dual core then there are a few fixes PLUS they are trying to fix the problem anyway.
I have dual core AM2 X2 4200 (running at 2.8GHZ), M2N32SLi motherboard, 3GB DDR2 PC6400 ram and an ATi x1900GT with no problems BUT I do play with no sound on XP64
As for what to buy, go with an Intel Core 2 Duo (and I am an AMD fan so Intel must be good at present). Get at least 2 GB of ram, You could keep you existing HDD or you could upgrade to a bigger SATA one (reccomended). Get a good motherboard and read a few revies on how good they are before making your mind up. Going PCIe is about the only choice that makes sence now along with DDR2 memory.
As for graphics, go with something cheap but capable of running eve. When Vista finally hits and DX10 cards come out in enough numbers to stop it being over priced you can sell your card and get a DX10 one. ----
God gave us a brain, he also gave us a voice.
Shame some people have yet to connect them.

Edited by: Stabs on 03/12/2006 18:49:59 If your going for dual core then you really should install XP64 for it to work properly. Once you are it runs fine with Eve.
The standard XP was never designed for 64bit hardware, or dual cores and it will cause problems (not just with Eve). Unless you disable one of the cores.

Dual core doesn't mean 64-bit. I believe most 64-bit processors have a 32-bit mode that you can select in the bios. I've heard of lots of problems people have when running XP64 due to drivers not being available and a lot of other nonsense. If you want to go the XP64 route it would likely mean a lot more research on the components you want to make sure there will be no problems.
