Hi, I'm considering buying a raven, I've never taken a part in a large fleet battle and would like to know opinions of people who have, how good is raven in them? I keep hearing how torps and cruises get wasted from splash damage, in regards to this, how effective are 6 launchers?
Any input is appreciated, setups/tips in using lauchers/etc.. tx..

Ravens are extremely useful in fleet battles, but those pilots dont look at their position in regards to everyone elses and so, just fire the missiles blindly, and of course fire em into the path of friendly missiles.
If you can plot your line of attack well theyre as deadly as they are in 1vs1.
Oh and use cruise missiles and not torps in fleet battles for the fact that cruise missiles have a smaller splash dmg radius if it becomes hard to position.

Ravens are nasty ships...you can do incredible amounts of damage in one of them. I've got one of them somewhere in a hanger, the only reason I keep it docked currently is due to the fact that I have to wrestle with my CPU to fit it the way I want to (hoping that weapon upgrades will have the effect I'm hoping for in the next patch). The ship has two other downsides as well. It's the slowest battleship in the game (I had to laugh when indies were beating me to the gate) and it requires the most ISK to maintain it's combat effectiveness (Torp/Cruise/Ammo cost).
It's one of the two best ships when it comes to shielding. If you set this ship up to take damage, you can ensure you'll be in the fight for quite a while. The slot setups allow for a pretty good setup, 8/6/5 is an excellent spread.
As for loadouts, you've got to figure out how to arm that to accomplish your specific goals. There is no best loadout for this as it's possible to set up as a fleet damage dealer, a blockade enforcer, a 1 vs. 1 figher, a sheild tank, an upcoming cloaked missile boat, etc.
Just remember...missiles require little to no cap to fire, they can inflict all of the damage types, they require no tracking (allowing you to kill drones if needed), and you can use an FoF version if you're ECM jammed. You may be able to hit at higher damage levels with some of the turrets out there and your missiles can be taken out with defenders, but the sheer number you can put out there is usually overwhelming.

Still waiting for an answer from you on chaos, btw. If you are careful enough you could perhaps even achieve a draw

You have to make a new copy of your normal eve and patch it up from there.

Ravens are good support ships in fleets but like any ships have vulnerabilities, especially if they are alone or with limited backup. remember phersephone? :P
I do not want to train torpedos above level one to avoid increasing splash damage radius. inreased damage radius = more wastage"your torpedo hits torpedo causing 450 damage" hmm

Not at all, you can make em a tank ship. (Plenty of hardeners) and in turn can take on 2x BSs at once. Hell even if your jammed you just load up ur FoF cruise missiles and hammer away.
All your cap goes on the shields, and if u just fire missiles u can keep goin for ages. Tried and tested

Edited by: Gan Ning on 18/11/2003 16:10:05 Ravens are indeed scary once they let rip, no matter how many defenders are fired to stop your missiles, you will just overwhelm them.
The only problem you will find with a raven is that if you want to use it for anything other than PvP it absolutely sucks.
