Ive seen other threads like this I would like to start a new. This is my first whine thread and I dont like cheese.
The new map: + Graphics + New features, staions etc easely navigated now.
- Orientation, why isnt my POV saved each time I load the map. Why is the map aligned sideways when opening it?
- It seems it requiers a powerfull computer to run smoothly. I can play halflife 2 on this comp without problems but I cant navigate EvE world map without clicking wrong systems and loose my orientation cause my mouse "laggs" so badly.
- The system map is gone from scanner window. Again I loose my orientation, Yes I think its good that I know where the planets are and related to each other. No I dont have time to press F10 to wait for nice graphic map to load when Im about to scan ppl to kill. F11 works but it also gives you a nice galaxy map and a so usuable constellation map \o/ and it takes 1/4 of the screen.
- Generally harder to make out how the world map is. Smaller dots, smaller lines. You would think it would make it easier but for some reason it gets my head spinning.
The improovements are ok. Especially the new features but IMO its not worth the cost. If devs would consider brining old map back atleast as an option I would for one be really happy. EvE always was easely navigated despite beeing a world in 3d, it isnt anymore.

I report as a bug the lack of keeping it 'flattened' when you want it flattened. I have to click the 'Unflatten' then 'flatten' again to get that setting back (until the next time opened) I do like the new info on the map though

I hate whinning but i also hate the new map. The pretty zoom gettings boring after a while, id rather a map that just did its job rather than doing cool zooms all over the place. _______________________________________________

I like the zoom animation, but when you're scanning systems for war targets that can see you in local, every second counts. There should be an option to turn it off. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Love the map, it looks fantastic, and I really want it to stay in game.
What I would dearly love is for an option to disable the fancy stuff for when i am in space and need to access info quickly.

On tft's the lines darker than before also.. ;)
Must have to do something with the drwaing method.. looks more like 3d-vectors now, instead the good old flat-lines, they used in the old map.. :(
Cheers
PS: I sign the demand for a simple map, like the old one, without this animations stuff.. even "instant" takes ages.. :( --------------------------------------------- Never fix a running system, but fix this dead LOW SEC, CCP!

New map looks great, yeah.
But that's it.
Otherwise it just drags my framerate way down. The always-on stars don't do anything for me visually, except drain my FPS further. The zoom animation is annoying because my computer doesn't display it, just lags from it.
I'd also like to be able to toggle the animation when you reset your camera in the regular window. This zoom around the ship before coming back is annoying as it just further taxes my system, and takes time to respond, making me click the button 3 or 4 times just to get the camera to come back.
If you're on IE, pretend this is transparent while you get a better browser. |

I agree I don't like the new universe map.
1. It doesn't remember position 2. Is upside down and the wrong way around each time I open it. 3. It hangs and then pops up this window which doesn't help when trying to set destinations.
The fact that when you set the map to the 'correct' orientation you don't have much movement to move around as it's on the opposite side.
The zoom out to system and then universe was interesting the first 2 or 3 times, now it's annoying. Specially if you go to warp or want to move back into the ship view again. ___________________

YOU CAN TURN THE ANIMATIONS OFF, PEOPLE. LEARN HOW TO USE IT BEFORE YOU WHINE ABOUT IT. Thank you.
PS: Revelations brought MANY changes. Some thingsare DIFFERENT but that does not mean they are worse than before. Trust the developers a little and change the way you think. I, like many of you, also had to adjust to the new changes and guess what? 95% of the changes, bar the bugs, are actually are BETTER than how it worked before!
Yes, there are bugs. Please report them. Yes, a few features that could be tweaked slightly. Dont whine about them. Bug report, post about them in a constructive manner.

Hmmm I look at my settings just now and its defenently turned off. Still the map goes "zoomgshh" rotates right "swwooooosh" makes a 180 degree flip and after a couple of seconds "snip" closes after pressing the F10 button.
TBH I think the map is so bad navigating that I never use it anymore to get an idea of my surroundings. I just roam the systems I know by typing in destination and go there with waypoints help.
I am convinced it will improve cause it cannot stay like this. But I still want the option of using the old map.

My CRT is properly calibrated. In fact, I use a brightness/colour matching program because I need accurate colours in photoshop. Also, just because YOU do not have an issue does not mean that other *different* monitors don't have issues.

I like all of the new info, but I dislike how it's implemented. The map is to dark and hard to read now. It takes a while to load, and it doesn't save flattened / unflattened.
It's a great idea, but I would rather have the old map back untill they get the new one in a usable condition. ---------- I gave up on sigs. As all the beatings are starting to hurt and leave nasty bruises. |

The only problem I have with the new map is opening it when docked. Sometimes, it hangs and I have to log to fix it...
Other than that, I think the new map is great. Personally, I think they should do away with 'flat maps'. The universe isn't flat and the maps shouldn't be either. Spend some time with it and adapt. Open the systemmap and warp from item to item and just get a feel for it.
Eve is very 'figure it out or die'. So, figure it out...

I'm sorry but I profusely disagree. If you desire to remain a part of the MMO community, then you need to keep upgrading your computer to match the times.
Would you bring a Model-T racer to a modern auto racing event? No. Then why would you complain when your out of date computer cannot process a modern game?
My upgraded and modern computer opens the new map perfectly and while I see no practical purpose in having a map that zooms in on my ship, it DOES give me a feeling of how massive EVE is and I love it.

Wow.... you win the moron of the day award!
If MMO's would only work on the high end computers CCP would only have a hand full of subscribers. Don't you think it's good for their wallet to make sure their product runs on as many machines as possible? Btw the answers you're looking for is "yes".

1) Don't put words in my mouth.
2) If you disagree, then do it professionally.
I never said that everyone has to have a cutting edge computer. What I did say, however, is that everyone does have to modernize with the times. EVE should not be played on the 1997 era computers that it was designed for.
This thread will quickly identify many people who are trying to play EVE on pre-turn of the century computers. They will be the majority of the one's /signing off on the OP's request.

Which map are you really talking about? The solar system map or the map of the universe? And which is old map are you refering to? Do you mean the system map in the scanner window?
If it is the map in scanner window then I don't agree. Never liked it. however I do miss being able to see which direction I am looking at with the green arrow but I have managed to direct my directional scans pretty well anyway.
I personally like the new system map a lot. Nice to see bookmarks etc directly on map.
The map over universe has always been hard to read IMO and is not any better now. I like that you can see what is in a system from the popup though. But still awkward to look around on the map (like it always been though).

signed as well, I'm not interested in sparkly and fluffy bits in a system I use very often, even less if it doesn't work correctly, is non-intuitive and lags me a lot more than the old system (which didn't lag at all).
On that same note, PLEASE bring back the system overview in the scanner window, the map is already annoyign enough, don't make me have to open it when I'm scanning... it lags a ton and I can't see what's going on when in mapmode.
A lot of good things came from Revelations, sadly the map isn't one of them.

Have to agree.
It is pretty and shining, but the usability seems far fetched.
My problem is "the wait" you have to do before you can acutally do something with it. Before it was "click" -> "loading" -> "use" Now its more like "click" -> "zoom" -> "rotate" -> "Flatten" -> "load" -> "use".
It has to either be faster doing all that, or we should be able to switch it off.
My two isk on that.

There is a control that controls the speed of the zoom animation. I don't remember the exact settings but it was in one of the tabs. I believe the default is 'normal' but you could also set it to 'fast' and something called 'instantaneous' or something along those lines. Using the last option makes things very workable for me at least. Pretty quick too.

The flattening (or lack thereof) is horrible but hopefully a bug that is fixed soonÖ. The instant transition option only promises but does not deliver, even with it on my transitions are far from instant, on both my slowish desktop and my fast laptop.
But there are good things about the new map too!
Like, I never knew the F11 stuff even existed until I was forced to use it with Revelations
And finally it is an advantage to have my gear strewn about almost every system in the galaxy, I one-click navigate through my assets window now
(Note: There is some sarcasm here, I would indeed rather have the old functional map back) --------- ZOMG my sig was concordokkened! Link removed due to bad language on remote site. -wystler

There are many person complaining about that animation effect, but why you don't just turn it off? Go to map, Star Map -> Animation and change transition speed to instant. It works faster than the old map for me now. Though the flatten - unflatten bug is annoying.
I personally love the new contracts system. For casual browsing it is definetely worse as you see less selections on one screen, but if you know what module you want it beats the old escrow hands down. For example you can search by contract title or item type. The contract limits mean there are no more people spamming 500 scams on there every day.

Edited by: Smagd on 04/12/2006 12:46:09 Turning off the transitions worked for me. Just setting them to "fast" didn't do much, but "instant" gives acceptable performance.
Wrong orientation is an issue, but not a major one. I usually end up rotating a lot to get a better view anyway. I use Ombeys maps for a general idea on how a region is laid out, where I am and where I want to go.
The lines are a bit of a bother: Trying to find an autopilot route is a bit tricky when it uses red lines, but most of the other lines are red, too (line color set to jump type here).
What freaks me most is the solar system labels. That font is TINY. And then you have system names like N-DQ0D where the last 4 letters look almost the same even in the regular font.
Additionally, to tell if that's 1 ships killed in space in the last hour or 7 I swear I need glasses and there's no "show info" or magnification for that. --

I have two new gripes with the new map. Firstly, it doesn't remember your POV, I flatten the map. I want it to stay flattened. Secondly, the lines etc are now much less prominent. I recognise places on my map by the lines (and in high sec by their sec status) while in a flattened view. The changes have really made it a pain in the ass for me. I would at least like the option to use the old map.

Of all the junk in revelations, the map is the best. I acturally use the thing now just to see that smooth translation from ship in warp to system map to star map and back down to ship in warp.
Second thing I like is the Myridon...coolest looking ship in Eve..
BUT KEEP THE NICE MAP!!

INSTANT isn't instant..!
I have it on the "instant" setting since the first 10 minutes, when I played with the new map the first time on wednesday after patch!
I want to get rid of the whole zoom-zong thing, that happens all the time I close the map from flattened mode.. Map flattened -> Close it -> it unflattens -> it rotates 90¦ back -> it moves out of sight -> ship is there, puh I don't want to know, what happens when it finally keeps flattened. Then It also does this stuff in reverse order, or what?! arrgs
Is that so hard to understand?

Would you bring a Model-T racer to a modern auto racing event? No. Then why would you complain when your out of date computer cannot process a modern game?
My upgraded and modern computer opens the new map perfectly and while I see no practical purpose in having a map that zooms in on my ship, it DOES give me a feeling of how massive EVE is and I love it.

I think it is stuipid that this map takes more power from the computer, or runs more unsmoothly then halflife 2 does. This is an entity with dots texts and lines. Halflife 2 is running a comples physics system and everything. Halflife 2 graphics is a good example on how to do, and so is EvE which have good grphics for its age. But the new map... it feels more unoptimized then a alfa version of some 3d fps shooting game.
Im talking about the universe map. I would like to have the old scanner map back in the window also though.

I used to open the map, browse it, check for various info - now I try to stay out of it as much as possible, all the unnecessary animation stuff and the lower performance greatly annoys me. Why couldn't they just make the new map optional? And a general question, why the heck are (graphical, UI, etc.) options so limited in EVE?

Yes i can see where the designer was coming from with the seemless map feature but frankly it isn't very practicle. Currently i have all animations turned off for it and the 3 second off wait for the zoom to go back in when closing the map is a slight annoyance. And yes i have to agree with that other man, forgot name,...bring back old escrow (brokers fee, i hate you). --------

the old map was perfect this new one is pretty but worthless. even without the "wonderfull zoom feature" if they took out or had options for everything that annoys me about it i'd have the old map... stop trying to fix things that aren't broken and fix the things that are.

I think there should be two ways to look at Eve Universe: space view and map view.
Space view is where a REAL "seamless" transition from ship view to viewing all the systems in Eve. There should be no limit on how you far you can zoom your camera out from your ship. The rate of zoom should exponential relative to distance. This can bring you to the system view, and if you zoom farther, a Starmap view. It will be all 3d and stuff.
Map View - Exactly how the old map was.
The current system is a messy blend of the two.

The old map did what it did well, and simply. It made sense.
The new map is weird, buggy and for the most part, useless. Last night I just wanted to see my route, that's all. Lines were there, they were gone, zoomed in ooops! It's all black now. Zoom back out, check settings again. Map is doing it's hula girl dance.
It's an annoying piece of crap. CCP can have it back.

the new map is sucky for a lack of better words. zooming with the mouse wheel is inverted, i don't want to wait for the silly map animation turning the 3d map and stuff, i have no idea how to use the system map... i can't use it while scanning because i don't see whats going on around me and i don't see any use for the new map thing at all. for warping to stuff in a system i use the context menu only or i click on it in the hud, whatever is faster in a specific situation. all the extra info in the map is nice, but i really don't need it.
i used to use the map for just looking at blobs for destinations to hunt targets and to plot a course. now i have to endure silly zooming, rotating and whatnot. i just don't open that thing anymore. i used to use the p&p thing to set destinations already before kali because it loads much faster and that's the most important thing i need anyway.
i think ccp tried to reinvent the wheel with this map. instead of zooming around, how about making it possible that i click on a region and it shows ALL system names next to the system star? so i can zoom in a bit more, read this system names, look around, plot a course, gank some targets... why do i need that? simply to familiarize myself with the hunting grounds? how often do i hear someone say "let's go to <random system>" and i'm like "man, where's that". check and see it's like 3 jumps out and i've never seen it on the map. for an overview of an area i have to use the offline map as pdf file... currently it's impossible (or i just haven't found the magical option) to get an overview of systems. oh wait, isn't a map supposed to do exactly that? guess not. --

I now read you can switch this function off... I retract my complaints

<JANET AND JOHN> I am a Trader. I have a lot of Assets.
The old map showed my Assets when I pressed the Assets button.
The new map does not show my Assets when I press the Assets button. It shows how many stacks of Assets I have at each station. It also shows Moons and Planets. I do not own any Moons or Planets.
When I click on the station assets arrow the Assets window comes up set to All. It takes a while to load because I have a lot of Assets. The station I have loaded is not visible in the window. I have to scroll down to see it.
Every time I select a different station the Assets window refreshes.
Can I have my old Assets map back please?

In space the map is alright, when docked it's complete garbage. It comes up unflattened, every single time, and if you aren't zoomed in very close to, it is really dark and you can't see anything. You have to zoom in so close for it to light up it is sometimes too close to see the surrounding systems that you would like to travel to.
Change it back, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the one you had in place already.

I have to say the new map was a nice idea, shame about the implmentation.
The whole flaten unfalten thing has been mentioned so i wont say an more, but why has the zoom been broken?
Get in to a big ship cap ship bs what ever, then look at a frig, you will see your zoom is still the same as if you where looking at your cap ship and you can not zoom in any more to look at the frig it jsut ends up beeing a dot miles away. :(
Even on instant trasfer it takes a few secs, also is ccp trying to give me rsi?
ever time i jump the zoom lvl resets not reall much of problem in the past you jsut clicked zoom out, not i have to scrole out ever time using the scrole wheel. It starting to do my head in.
PS I have now clicked post 42 times when can we get a forms that work?
I am sick of just beeing taken to an empty posting box or having to clikc login 5 or 6 times to log in, did ccp buy the crappys forum softweare in teh plaent? ----------------------------------------------
