Edited by: Cerwyn Taraman on 04/12/2006 03:56:46 Back when tractor beams were added (RMR I think?) you also seeded into the item databases Medium and Large Tractor beams that had a much greater tractoring range. Why were these never seeded as BPOs?
To be honest, looting the things you kill in EVE has to be one of its greatest weak points compared to just about ALL other MMOs. It shouldn't take such a great deal of effort to loot the "corpse" (wreck/can) of the NPC that I have destroyed. Looting should not be painfully slow to mission runners to the point that most of us just leave everything laying around now because it ain't worth the time to loot it. Also, why not add some skills to allow us to improve tractoring speed and max tractoring range? Two rank 5 skills, one for speed, one for max tractor range, maybe 5% / level?
Tractor beams have so much promise, but the 20km range limit kind of hurts when you create missions for us that have NPC groups 100's of km apart from each other in little clumps.
Please help the thousands upon thousands of mission runners out there by at least giving us the medium and large tractor beams you teased us with months ago!

Any dev want to comment on why we never got these put in? Is there a balance reason why we can't tractor something from 40km, or 80km away?

I reckon the Medium tractor beam should just have a 40km range + higher velocity. Large tractor beams should be able to pull in asteroids from 40km :D

IMO cause CCP likes time sinks... why going and leaving warp so slow? why warp to 0 was for so looooooong time ignored? CCP just must have at least few ways to make us waste time playing EVE...

Would be nice to add them in now, to go along with the salvage "mini-profession". Would really be handy for slavagers to be able to loot that little bit faster, I'd imagine. -----------------------------------------------

Again: To allow time for PvP to occur. WTZ wasn't implemented to speed up your life. It was implemented to remove bookmarks without taking away functionality players had. It has the unfortunate side affect of limiting places where PVP can occur which is why they compensated by nerfing Warp Core Stabilizers so that PVP could still occur, just on the other side of the gate.
On the other hand: Looting is a pain in the arse. I would love to see medium and large tractor beams put in the game.

Since mission running is generally viewed as a PVE action (which I bet there are more of us doing missions in Empire than there are people in all of 0.0), I don't see how tractoring would have to do with allowing time for PVP? To those who don't know, the medium / large ones i'm not asking for a new feature or anything, they were originally announced way back when tractors were put in and they just never seeded BPOs for them.
Oveur mentioned in a thread about Salvaging that he would like to make some skills more useful, especially when they change them (such as the Survey skill now that Survey 5 won't be required). Hopefully they will look to some of the useless Science skills (used only as pre-reqs to use items) and give them bonuses to tractor related things. Make it easier for us to get the items we've earned by killing the NPCs.

You know, I was just thinking about what you said about PVP balance etc, i'm not sure how beams would be involved but if they needed some sort of balance maybe they could have some sort of mass increase or some minor nerf when you fit tractor beams. Again, they seem to be a purely PVE item but that would at least be a way of pre-nerfing the larger ones if they needed it for some reason.

Sorry to say it, but any MMORPG has to have time sinks. If they didn't, inflation would just spiral for starters. Some of them admittedly feel like a right PITA, but generally you need them for game balance.

I don't think they are a problem with game balance. You do have to spend a high slot(weapon/offense item) in order to mount a tractor. All they will due is reduce the end of mission lag. I find looting so annoying that I either use a lighter faster ship or just ignore it entirely so I would love bigger/longer tractors.

You make a really good point, you have to give up DAMAGE to mount tractor beams so what is the harm in giving us the medium/large ones which will of course take more CPU/Grid and be a further nerf to mounting them..
