Heya all,
A word of advice for would be pirates (i.e. the ransoming type).
If your are going to ransom, then ransom. If you are going to kill, kill. But don't kill, then change your mind and ransom. You will probably lose money.
Here is a tasty little morsel of a story (in which I am the victim):
So I'm running lvl IVs in lowsec - a risky ventre, especially now. I was a little complacent, blowing stuff up, making some ISK. When suddenly, flashing red on my overview. I try to warp, but too late. My megathron is hobbled, despite the WCS (hey, I always use on on mission running...). So after 30 minutes I lock the inty (actually it was like a minute, lol) and suddenly, in warps all kindsa bad mofos, scramming me, laying out damage...
So I watch the show - BOOM! A good kill by the pirate party - fitted for rats, I didn't even manage to get a single one with me :(. So then I try to warp out my pod, scrammed. I knew it, it's over. Then something funny happened: I get a contact from the pirate gang leader. I respond to his hail. 'Sup', I say. The reply '30 mil for your pod, sir'. 'lol', I reply as I hit the self destruct.
Here's the thing. I would have paid 50 mil for my ship and fittings, but they had to get their killboard points. I think ISK is a little better. They tried to hold my pod ransom for more than 60 times it's worth. I had a clone 1 jump away and no implants.
I would venture - if ransom is what you're after, try it BEFORE you kill them. It's easier to demand pay for something you have (i.e. my captive mega), rather than for something you think you have (my pod with a set of +4 implants). I don't typically have implants of that nature, for the very specific reason - I don't want to lose them.
A good (if a little one sided) kill, though. Makes me appreciate what effort I put into getting that, but don't worry, I'll be back - just stick with your friends...

Yeah. If theres a good chance for a ransom then I just might, but so few pay its not worth it. (also when blowing up a really badly fitted Teir 3 Battleship (rokh), I want the killmail Rather then the money tbh :P ). I have ransomed, but never for pods. If they carry implants then yeah, but I have no way of telling.
Stupid idiots should have ransomed your BS tbh :) Red Storm Vendetta is now recruiting! Click me for more info |

With the amount of +4 implants giving out by agents, I would randsom the pod to and get the killmail for the ship

u've so got it wrong i'm afraid. it's not all about making isk in eve. they will have got enjoyment from blowing up ur ship. squishing pods can be fun put better to get isk as most fit implants these days.
i do the same myself. not because we're stupid but because it works for what we want. sure some ppl won't have implants or care about pod but many do and i'd rather watch a mega go boom and collect mods than get paid 30-50mil for it tbh.

Risk vs. Reward.
Pods can't fire back, but who knows what your BS might have been capable of. It is far easier to ransom a helpless target than it is one with teeth. And again you might have had implants.

Yes - you're all bringing up valid points.
I did lose some good mods on that ship, I'm sure they got some good points. It just seemed a little silly to ransom the pod, but it's true, they didn't know that I had no implants, and the cost of replacing clones has gone way down.
So at least it gave me an opportunity to laugh in their face

Aaaah.. So this is what pirates have in mind when they complain about risk vs. reward for mission runners.
Silly me thought you were all hypocrites, but it seems there really is some risk involved in pirating..

The professional teams do though..

I rofled in my pod again.
But seriously, unless preserving the ship in question is more valuable to its pilot than its destruction is to me, I will destroy the ship. Of course, there are many ships that are worth quite a lot to the pilot, but not much at all to me. Most of the time, however, it's safer, easier and more fun to just destroy the ship and sort through the wreckage for valuable trinkets. This is especially true of mission runners. _

They made the choice to kill you while they could before you potentially (mind you) might logoff your ship, or bring in friends, or whatever...I can't blame them for that, I'd probably have made the same call in their place.
The day logoffski gets fixed will likely be the day a lot more pirates start ransoming ships imo, as there'd be a lot more of a guarantee that they couldn't run from a victorious ganksquad.

When I used to pirate, if someone rejected a ransom for their ship, I would not bother ransoming the pod. If they're not going to pay to save the ship, then they don't need to be given a chance to save their pod.

In a close fight you also don't really want to be risking turning off your highslots to offer a monetary settlement and lose any edge you had. I have come out of a 1v1 against a Raven with 6% structure, not a situation I would even be thinking about ransoming.
Invarabily it's safer to shoot first and ask for ransoms later.

To clarify - I was in the pirating biz for a little while and am mainly a PvP player, so I understand the philosophy of the ransom - hence the reason not to have +4 implants.
I guess to clarify my original post:
There were about 8 of em (from Snigg - BTW - NPCs got the killmail ) and they had very little difficulty in bringing down my thron (I was fitted for missions - but if not, I may have lasted long enough to at least get the pesky tackler).
It just seemed to me like an afterthought, to ransom my pod. That was my point. They could have ransomed the ship, then if I didn't pay, blow it up, then ransom the pod. Then if I didn't pay, blow it up. That's all I was trying to say.
Quote: Pods can't fire back, but who knows what your BS might have been capable of. It is far easier to ransom a helpless target than it is one with teeth. And again you might have had implants.
Simple - when I'm in 10-15% structure, tell me to unlock all targets and stand down. Then ransom me at will.
Quote: They got your ship and your pod and you are still laughing? I think you should have taken it as an opportunity to put on a brave face and die like a man.
I'm not actually sure what you mean. I thought laughing in the face of death was a brave thing to do. Have you any suggestions as to how I could be more defiant?
Quote: They made the choice to kill you while they could before you potentially (mind you) might logoff your ship, or bring in friends, or whatever...I can't blame them for that, I'd probably have made the same call in their place.
I heard that - IF ANY OF YOU COME ACROSS CRAG HEYDER - HE DOES *NOT* LOG OFF! (Just in case you want to fight me

Me too - for the most part...
Finally - I am glad that the 8 snigg dudes thought I was enough of a threat to not risk me biting back - admittedly, I got a little complacent in the first place - should have holed up when I saw 8 snigg enter local.
Snigg, I thank you for the reminder - watch your backs, you will at some point face me when the odds are a bit more even

Edited by: Kamazani on 05/12/2006 19:27:47 Edited by: Kamazani on 05/12/2006 19:26:36 the majority of these pirates do what they do cuz they have nothing better to do but flex their teeny weeny's.
ransoms should never be paid, period, why? because someone who is willing to go the extra mile to kill YOU in a mission, unexpectedly and needlessly, isn't worth paying ransom to as they could go either way. would you trust to hand feed a dog if you got bit by one before? either way, I wouldn't be doing missions in low sec anymore.
so..... this "risk vs. reward" argument by some of them. regarding mission running in low sec, doesn't rip a hemorrhoid with me. Look, I'm not against pirating, If I want to deal with them and take the risk with them I'll go to low sec or 0.0. and i do quite often in my rifter when i feel like doing courier missions or ratting in the belts.
just a thought, if ccp feels the probes have caused more problems than they intended and pirates, doing what they tend to do, get out of control and they (ccp) decide to nerf the probes. what are you going to do, besides whine constantly? --------------------------- by: GinoShin on 21/11/2006 11:41:44 whats evemon is it like a jamican wiseman? |

Lets say the pirates were 5. 50m / 5 leaves 10m per pirate.
The options the pirates had were either: Kill you, hoping to get some uber named stuff which could be worth billions and maybe even ransoming your pod for who knows what amount
..or..
Get 10m each and keep some of their sec. status, if not -10.0 already.

I dont bother with frigates or players under a month old when considering ransoms. I destroy their ships and leave their pods alone. However, if a player is older I ransom if possible from cruisers and up. I ransomed a Omen last night for 4 million. *shrugs* Beats popping a ship imo.
