It seems to me it is a very underated Cruiser.
According to popular opinion the best PvP Battleship is the Raven due to it's powerful shields and ability to fire fof Cruise Missiles. Whilst the Blackbird is widley considered the best PvP Cruiser.
However, a Caracal can fit 5 H50's which can them selves fit Torps/Cruise making it the Ravens younger brother. There for even if I was target jammed by a BB in my Caracal, I could still switch to Cruise Missiles (fof) and take out the BB with ease.
Anyone agree with me on this?

It was underrated for a long time because missiles sucked for a long time until they were remedied with a patch.
After patch, Caracal finally has some use. But it remains so specialized its not pretty useful for anything else but fleet support.

The Caracal seems to be a very fine missile cruiser, but I suspect that the reason it isn't more popular is that it is a missile cruiser. Missiles are too expensive to rely on to hunt NPCs and by the time someone has the money to fight in PVP with cruise missiles they probably have a Scorpion or Raven anyway.
I could see a corp's military using Kestrels and Caracals as relatively cheap missile boats in a war, but for the average player a cruiser that can only mount 2 mining lasers and costs a fortune to farm NPCs in wouldn't look too good. I am surprised more pirates don't use them though... a mixed fleet of Caracals and Blackbirds could be deadly.

Not necessarily. I'm talking pure PvP not all rounder (I'd say the Maller was best all rounder but that's another subject for another thread).
With regards to affording a Scorpion/Raven yes, you could reach the basic skills to use them but you wont have as high as skills on the BS as with the Cruiser, plus a Cruiser is going to be able to out manoeuvre a BS any day making it easier to get into good firing positions. I'm not discounting the fire power of a Scorp or Raven just saying it's easier to obtain the skills for the Cruiser.
It's aslo said that the Cracal is extreamly specialised. Well again, sticking to PvP what would you call EW? you need good EW skills to make a BB effective in single combat and those EW skills are easily overcome by Cruise and Missiles use less cap.

i was taken out by a caracal once while hunting ncp in 0.0 space. At the time i was using a thorax as it was the easiets cruiser to use at the time and could be tanked with ease. anyways caracal jumps into the belt im already scrambled by the barons and tbh it was an easy kill for him. i had the wrong hardeners on for his missiles. nice ship for doing the deed in. The caracal is my PvP ship of choice. I've done a lot of testing on CHAOS and on Tranquility, killing other cruisers and battleships. As a friend said in his Apocalypse, "Missile boats are the only things I truly fear."
With the right missile skills a Caracal turns any cruiser pilot into a sobbing gamer. 3 or 4 Caracals can take out a battleship with ease, lobbing 15-20 torpedos at a time. Mjolnir torps eat through shields like a hot knife through butter, and followed up with Bane torpedos a ship is gone within a few seconds. My record is 8 torpedo hits for a single cruiser, a lone osprey way out of its league. I bloodied a battleships nose by myself runnign a blockade, dealing 75% shield damage in two volleys, while he got 1 shot off. Combined with a MWD, you can literally run past the ship in question at high speeds and drop torpedos as you run, creating a blitzkreig that I dubbed the Caracal Bomber.
They are excellent ships and I highly recommend them. -----------------------------------------------

Caracal can also be used as an effective EW ship too for 1 vs 1, especialyl if you know your opponents ship. 1 fast targeter and 3 race specific jammers or 3 sensor dampers + a litle range can allow you to disable the other ship while you pound the crap out of it.
The only thing that sucks about Cruisers in a fleet battle situation is that they are often targeted first and taken out in 15-20 seconds. They are easy to kill but still be can be very effective damage dealers and support ships.

Edited by: Aethelgrin on 18/11/2003 19:58:49 I fly a Caracal for agent missions and NPC pirate hunting.
4 H-50's plus one medium laser.
Those cruise missles pay for themselves just on bounties if you manage to kill multiple rats per shot (which happens fairly often in target-rich environments).
It was a nice upgrade from my Celestis and Omen.

cruise missiles for ncp hunting..ffs plz you aint proper ncp hunting till you deal with 5x40k rats and then cruise missiles will be worthless... ncp hunting is for thoraxs or battleships if you want to make money. only thing caracal is good for is pvp STAN

The trick to successful Caracalr use during fleet battles is to use a passive targeter.

The Caracal is a battleship killer if in a team of a blackbird which jams the BS the caracal can unleash massive amounts of damage. did this aginst a tempest on test server. i had no problems.

Trick to using Caracal for NPC hunting is simple.
Your loadout has to be 3 H-50s and 2 250mm rails. The rails are fitted with antimatter. The Caracal has tremendous range for rails---trade this of for maximum damage. As for missiles, if you use Thunderbolts and Widowmakers, use them as shield softeners. If you use Scourges or Havocs, use these as target finishers.
If you engage a large cruiser spawn, attack with both rails and missiles to quickly reduce the number. Never mind about the cost of heavies---they're really cheap these days. Once you are left with one or two, you can deal with them just using rails alone. This saves you money. Since the respawns occur one at a time, you can spend the rest of your time farming with the rails alone until you run out of ammo.
Using the spawn, you can also test and practice other missiles---cruise, torps, FoF, defenders---in order to give you the 'feel' of using them.
One thing I must say about FoF. If I am a Blackbird pilot trying to jam a Caracal, and the Caracal responds with FoF cruise missiles, the Blackbird can respond with defenders, or drop a secure can as a decoy. FoF still has a bug in them that makes them pursue cans.
I find plenty of FoF lights and heavies among loot and cache cans. I use them in NPC hunts to test and expend them and I really dislike the way they can be distracted.
