Does your isp use throttling during peak hours?
I use tiscali and complained to them about it, it got sorted. But seems to have returned, so i've updated my complaint.
wait and see it seems :)

I recieve packet loss using tiscali during 19.00 22.00 GMT and get anything from status unkown to CTD. I'm really getting hacked off with it tbh.

yup i've had a right go at them tonight, i've had these problem for 2 weeks and tiscali have removed their broadband section on their forums due to someone posting a poll which said 75% of customers polled had these issues.
Status unknown during peak hrs grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

that one wasn't used on me, but the problem with tiscali is you are bound into a 12 month contract.
Also even with my limited understanding of broadband connections I know that the amount of data used to play games is small. So the reason they have provided you is invalid.

Holy moly.
*makes mental note to never ever ever use tiscali, and warn my friends away from them*
I mean jesus, what do they think you're paying them for?!
I'd bully them in to letting me cancel my 12 month contract, on the grounds that the terms of the contract have been changed. Not sure if thats leagally sound, but they're unlikely to argue about it. -----------------------------------------------

Actually, I wonder if it'd be possible for some Dev intervention here? I mean I know its nothing to do with CCP, all this, but maybe one bussiness to another, they may be able to explain to them the miniscule bandwidth use of the EVE client.
This is bound to affect huge numbers of players, afterall.
The least we can do is ask -----------------------------------------------

Same prob here...cant connect and using tiscali....called them and they said no they dont use ISP throttling during peak hours, they claimed it was the line with a high noise ratio, high ping or something like that.
Will be asking for my migration authorisation code tomorrow anyone recommend a good IP in UK?

Can anyone explain to me in dumb language what they have done and why? Are they just blocking the ccp server during a certain time period?

Tiscali exec 1: Well, we're getting more users and making more money! This is great!
Tiscali exec 2: Yeah, but people's service is slowing down to a crawl... We're losing some of our core subscribers to AOL. AOL MAN! THE HORROR!
Tiscali exec 1: What can we do about it?
Tiscali exec 2: Well, according to certain American members of congress, the internets are a series of tubes...
Tiscali exec 1: This doesn't solve our problem.
Basically, the concept of throttling is like putting a bottleneck on your internet connection. They set a maximum limit on your bandwith usage and don't allow you to go over it. They do this because they're too cheap to buy new data cables. ___________

I'm with Tiscali too, and my conenction plays silly buggers every day after about 3pm... Its really annoying, but I'm beginning to get used to it. Weird how I can use I.E. but can't access servers on games or use other programs that use the internet. ___________

Tiscali has a thottling policy that is supposed to combat peer-to-peer software. What it actually does is impose a limit on the amount of data you can download from the same ip address. So if you down load a lot on that day then your access to that ip is throttled/blocked during peak times.
That being said, when I run utorrent the connection speed rarely drops during the so called paek hours.
Oh and my service is routed through the US, being from the UK that adds an extra 100ms onto my ping times as well .
If my connection problem doesn't get fixed, i'll be terminating the contract on false advertisement and breach of contract.

Internet traffic is like a stream of water.
Tiscali provides you with the stream of water.
Now, Tiscali hasn't got the pipes to channel enough water to their customers, so they make their lines thinner, thus reducing the amount of water going to each customer and giving all of their customers equal, but lower, amount of water.
The problem with this is that with a thin line, you can't get enough "water" to run your internet stuff and things that require a constant stream tend to run dry.
I think that's a good analogy.
If Tiscali binds people for 12 months, one should really take a good look at what they say they will provide. It's -ing difficult to actually go about convincing them that they're neglecting their part of the contract since they're the ones sitting on all the info and can blatantly lie to you saying it's your fault or your lines' fault (as someone was told above).
Makes me glad I live in Sweden. Our spirits outlets may be monopolized by the government, but our broadband sure as hell isn't. It's standard over here to have no commitment times what so ever, and all.
But yeah, if ISP is ****ty for whatever reason, don't hope they'll pull through. Change provider immediately. And never go to a provider with long commitment times (or whatever it's called) and other nastiness. - EVE is sick. |
