Just been reading the foroums about carebears and such conplaining about the "GAP" between mission/ratting setups and PVP setups
Basicaly my main is a pirate and i pop peeps with it sometimes they are setup for PVP and other times they are setup for ratting/missions!
basicaly when you fit youre ship at a station you choose what youre ship will have fitted ie do i fit to max my pretection against "1" damage type or do i fit for all "4" when you choose you are diffing what you are gooing to be most effective against
this basicaly means if the rats in the area where im pirating are weak to kenetik i tank kenetik as i know the ratters will be using kenetic wepons and if the rats do em damage i know not to deal em damage as thats what my victime will be tanking against its that simple
this basicaly means that when you setup youre ship that is when the pirate will win because if you choose to fit soly for ratting/missions you are setting it up to die, its risk V reward you fit to maximise youre damage and tank thuse making more ISK the risk is that you are gimping youre setup cus thats what a ratting/mission setup is a gimped usless brocken setup that will fail you at everything other than its one intended purpose
the PVP setup on the other hand is nutrual it dosnt have a pacifc tank strength and you try not to deal just one damage type "unless youre in a gang" if you do have a specized setup you choose youre victim its as simple as that
to PROVE that a PVP setup is a Nutraul setup try PVP in a ratting setup = death. now try rat in a PVP setup = slow but you do it :)
basicaly if you fit for ratting/missions you are gimping youre setup and there are risks to this so stop moaning and fit a nutraul setup and rat a little bit slower thats all!

id say EVE is probally the only MMO where a PVP setup and a PVE setup are nearly exclusive of eachother. many pvp setups wouldnt last too long in a level 4 mission while a Lvl 4 Mission setup would be fragged in PVP(unless the other player happened to pick the same resist as the rats you were fighting, then they would have some work to do).

When I fit a ship for a mission, the first thing I put on are a few essentials, such as a speed mod (usually an AB), a warp-scrambler and a few armor-reppers.
Then I think about wether I am going for sustained combat or quick strikes. For sustained combat I fit a lot of NOS, and perhaps a gun or two. For a quick strike I fit all guns.
Then I think about how my tank is going to be compared to my capacitor, and fill up with some cap-recharges (if I go full NOS I basically don't need this).
Then I fit at least two, more commonly three armor hardeners for the rats (usually this will protect me against the most common damage-types of the region I am in. Ex, for Gallente space, Thermal/Kinetic will always do. For Caldari-space, it's a bit trickier.
If I have spare mid-slots I fit an ECCM and a webber, and then I'm done.
This works well for both missions and PvP, even though it's not great at either.
