Edited by: Xiang Yu on 07/12/2006 01:15:58 Yes, a cheesy monopoly reference. However, this is exactly what I noticed as I logged on. At the character screen I saw something unusual. I had about 1.4 million isk extra in my account. Now I'm thinking, well maybe someone must of saw me yesterday and was generous. This was not the case. Somehow the damage control 1 that I put up for sale at the starter academy for $20,000.00 isk earned me 1,400,000.00 isk. Either I made a mistake and typed in a completely wrong price or I need to start investing in damage controls that miraculusly turn into big money $$$!!!
So I checked out my log of transactions, and I see $180.00 isk was taking out by tax for putting up a sale of $20,000.00 (the damage control). How did my damage control make such a huge jump in price by itself? Maybe someone knows the answer.
Anyways, being the honest businessman that I am, I refunded 1.4 million isk (minus the $20,000.00 for the damage control) and wrote a letter to Patrica T'var (the customer) explaining what happened and why i'm refunding her money. I try to keep my business practices as honest as in real life, it just gives me a better sense of accomplishment when I earn my isk fair and square.

What happened was they bought an overpriced item, but since you were the lowest price in the station, you got the money instead.
Its perfectly fair.

Its the way buy/sell orders work.
If there are the following sell orders in a single station: 3 units @ 1.5million isk 20 units @ 20k isk and I right click on the 1.5million isk one and hit "buy this" I get the item for 1.5million isk - however it is fulfilled by the cheapest sell order, so the person that is selling at 20k isk actually is the one selling the item. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

That doesn't even make sense to me, if someone is silly enough to overpay that much for something why shouldn't the money go to the one who set up the over priced sale order?
It seems to me that either it should charge him only 20k or the excess should go to the one who put up the sale order for that much Co-Founder of Xenu Nuclear Technologies

Because when you buy, you're actually placing an Immediate order. The order is then automatically filled by the lowest-priced sell order on the list.

So shouldn't the order be for 20k instead of 1.5 mil? Co-Founder of Xenu Nuclear Technologies

Yes, but if the person chooses to buy from the 1.5m order, they are placing a 1.5m order.

Ok then I don't understand why the person who put up the sell order for 1.4 mil doesnt get the benefit of the over pricing that he actually set?

You don't get a benefit for overpricing if someone has beaten your price in the same station... how does that not make sense? When an order is placed, it automatically chooses the lowest priced order to buy from, always.

exactly, and if his was only 20k then why did he end up with 1.4 million?
Thats where I am losing you
Why did the buyer pay 1.4mil when there was one for 20k available. And if it charged the buyer 1.4 million why doesn't the money go to the person who had the sell order for 1.4 million. It doesn't make sense to me that it should go to the seller for 20k. Co-Founder of Xenu Nuclear Technologies

When you buy an item, you create a buy order for 1.4 million ISK.
All buy orders automatically are satisfied by the lowest priced item.
Thus, the 1.4 million ISK buy order is satisfied by the 20k ISK sell order.
However, the buy order was for 1.4 million ISK. Buy orders give exactly what they say they do--otherwise trade would be impossible. And so the 20k ISK seller gets paid 1.4m for his 20k item.

Ok I think i get it
Although it seems pointless to me that it satisfies the cheapest order but still takes the full ammount of money Co-Founder of Xenu Nuclear Technologies

Yeah I did that when I started my trial. I made about 10 mil but I didn't like my attributes after I read more into the game. So I started this character and since trials can't transfer money, I figured hmm, I'll be smart and sell tritanium for 10 mil to my other character through the market. I probably made some new miner pretty happy that day ___
