Edited by: Blablayadada on 07/12/2006 21:10:40 I am experimenting with railguns on my taranis. I have always used blasters before but I want slightly better range.
My first attempt at a setup:
Taranis
125mm Railgun II 125mm Railgun II 125mm Railgun II Small 'Knave' I Energy Drain
1MN MicroWarpdrive II Faint Epsilon Warp Prohibitor I X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator
Micro Auxiliary Power Core I Pseudoelectron Containment Field I Small Armor Repairer II
Hobgoblin II Hobgoblin II
240 shield, 1.2/s, E/T/K/Ex=10/28/55/64 507 armor, E/T/K/Ex=65/43/52/21 257.8125 cap, +4.08/s, -15.94/s 3566.25 m/s 114.5 DPS
This is for inside web range. Maybe take some pot shots as I approach and try to orbit at 9km orso. I deliberately didn't go for a plate as not to slow it down.
So.. whaddaya think?

I'm of the opinion that if I'm gonna be in web range with a Taranis, I might as well fit blasters. If I was to use rails, I'd prefer to stay out of web range and fit a 20k scrambler, and fit the rest of the ship accordingly so my cap will hold.
Then again I've never tried what you're suggesting! --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

^^ that's what I use
Great for cruiser killing, can't hit inties for **** though. Get a crow for inty pwning.

Railranis is the most versatile, resilient and useful interceptor in the game when flow correctly with good skills. I particularly like them for inty dogfighting, as they can keep close-range inty's at range inside web (out of blasteranis/autoclaw/etc range) and shake off long-range, weaker DPS intys (Missile Crows/Beam Saders/etc) with their ability to outdamage and outlive them.
This is the rig I use for my Ranis, it's a slight re-working of a friends rig, but for the way I operate, it's absolutely perfect. It has an effective engagement range of around 1km-22km, it does enough damage and has enough survivability [With skills] to kill another inty before it kills you and can safely engage much larger targets, tackling them momentarily before your friends arrive.
High Slots: - 4x 125mm II Railguns loaded with Antimatter. Keep 2k in cargo bay and 2k of iridium too. - 1xSmall Remote Armor Repairer. Keep offlined. Offline a railgun and online this when you need to repair drones/gangmates. Always remember to re-offline the rep and re-online your railgun afterwards.
Med Slots: - 1mn Microwarpdrive II. (If you want to save money, you can fit a Tech I or a named Tech I variant.) - x5 Prototype Webifier. (Don't fit any lesser webber, maintaining distance from ships like blasteranises is vital, so you need a good web. x5's are almost as good as fleeting for a fraction of the price) - Fleeting Warp Disruptor. You absolutely, positively, want a 20km scrambler on your ranis. You simply don't move fast enough to tackle faster-warping ships that jump into you and decloak 22km away. With a 20km, you just need to burn the mwd, approach, and spam the scram, and you'll have him. They eat cap badly, so you need to train the proper skills to minimise that. Also, fitting a 20km allows you to get the optimal use out of a Ranis, which can effectively engage targets anywhere within the 20km scramble range.
Low Slots: - Micro Auxiliary Power Core - 200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten. Don't stinge yourself here, buy the best plate you can get, which is the RT. You need every single little bit of HP you can get, it all adds up. The RT also has reduced mass, compared to Crystalline Carbonide plating etc, that means better mobility, which is vital to inty work. - Emergency Damage Control. Don't blow the bank on a super-expensive DC. Emergency DC's are good enough and only cost a little bit. Putting one of these on is like adding a whole new armor plate. Now when your armor drops you wont be so panicked, knowing that the inty you've almost got down still has to eat through a whole 800 HP with 50%+ resists before you're really screwed. Additionally, it adds some resistance to Armor and Shield, boosting your overall HP nicely.
Drones: 2xWarrior I drones. Tech II if you can. Make sure to keep their damage either explosive or EM, to round out the damage your doing with your hybrids (Kinetic and Thermal)
I've been thinking about taking 2xEV-300 (Energy Neutralizer) drones to screw over other interceptors cap, but I've had enough success just using Combat Drones that I haven't tried it yet. I think it could work nicely though.
Basic strategy is to keep close-range inty's at around 7-8km. Use Mwd bursts to distance yourself from Blasteranis (and other in your face intys) whilst inside web. Watch your cap whilst doing this, as it's a cap-intensive setup.
For long range intys, first, work towards getting a web, and if you can't, load iridium and smack them around until they either flee or you distract them inside web.
Pretty much copy/pasted this from an old Corp forums post, but I think it's all still true. If you want more info, convo me, I've got a big list on useful skills to train for it too, if that helps.

Actually, its:
2x 125mm IIs 1x 150mm IIs 1x Small Knave NOS
1x Catalyzed MWD 1x Web 1x 20k scram
1x SAR II 1x DCU 1x MAPC
2x Hobgoblin IIs
I dont have much AWU skills myself, so i use 3x 125mm instead, with the same setup.
For tackling, DCU can be switched out for a CPR, Signal Amp or even a magstab. Or a nano/intertial stab + upgrade the guns/NOS abit. ---

Thorium ammo is nice to have onhand as well, I get an ~15km range with it loaded, so I keep that in the guns at most times. I also prefer acolyte or warrior drones, as they're faster and can usually catch inties that are MWDing (gist crows aside).

I agree with everything Nooey just said and heres my PRE rev setup:
3x 125mm
1mn mwd t2 fleeting scram (least cap intensive 20km disruptor) fleeting or x5 web
DCU (pick you pricerange, they all work) Mag stab t2 cap relay.
Ive flown my ranis very limited after the patch but in the cap relays place i put an inertia stab (OVERPWERED) because with the new sizable cap (yay) its kinda the same regen it feels like. (being able to never turn off your mwd is <3 but is usually a problem when using t2 and no cap mods)

Exactly where are the rails ??
I love quickfit ppl ...; just like with SISI setups, they are not always viable on TQ. That setup costs too much, considering what you get in return. -----

Hmmm you got your inty skill up too? Gotta get that Taranis tracking bonus. Also, the further you orbit the better the tracking so keep around 19k.
