I figure since many of you probably buy things of Ebay that you may be interested in my story.
I decided that I wanted to buy myself a new laptop for christmas. My current computer just can't handle the big battles Eve as well as I want it to. I wanted to get a laptop because my house has a wireless connection and I think the idea of being able to play Eve at any location within my home is pretty damn cool.
I set my sights on the Dell XPS M1710. While it's not the tip of the iceberg in terms of gaming laptops, the machine is a gaming laptop in it's purest form. However, the price was pretty hefty: $2300-3800. Because of that, I wanted to see if I could get some better deals through Ebay.
I did some bidding. To make a long story short, I let my impatience get the best of me. I see a listing that is ending in 5 minutes, and it was still at like 1600 dollars for a laptop that went for 3700. I saw the seller had 0 feeback but he was answering questions about the laptop and he knew what he was talking about. It seemed like he was legit and was asking for the money through Paypal. Anyways, I ended up getting in a bid war and I decided on an impulse to put in one last bid at 2800 dollars. I ended up winning the item.
I was happy to see that I was able to communicate to the seller through his gmail account. I send Paypal my 2800 through my debit card. He told me that he dropped off his package on Wendesday Nov. 29th. He gave me a UPS tracking number and said it should be in a system after a day. Which is usually true. However, this number never became a valid UPS number. He told there was some issues with the xmas rush. The following Tuesday I try emailing him stating my concern that the UPS number is still not yet valid. To my distraught, he deleted his gmail account.
He had cut off all communication with me. I tried emailing to his other email address listed under PayPal. No response. I immediately put a dispute up in Paypal. He didn't respond in 24 hours so I upgrade the dispute to claim so that Paypal can investigate him.
So here I am almost 3 grand poorer and without a laptop. Chances are that he probably removed the money out of his Paypal account, in which case it will be hard for PayPal to recover my money. I can also try to get back my money through issueing a charge back with my debit card through my bank, but I have to wait and see if Paypal can take care of it.
The moral of the story is to NEVER purchase from someone with 0 feedback. I know that sounds obvious, but sometimes you do stupid things when a huge saving is put in front of you. Especially, don't purchase and item over $200 from someone who isn't trustworthy. Because if you aren't able to get your money back Ebay/PayPal has buyer protection up to 200$. Needless to say, $200 is nothing compared to what I payed. Evolution in Eve:

Isn't there some sort of fraud protection that Ebay/Paypal have?
A friend of mine bought an ipod off ebay a while ago- turned out it was broken and the seller tried to avoid all contact. Not sure how but they managed to figure out that the seller lived fairly nearby and they confronted her at her house.. rofl.
Figure out where he lives and go kick his ass.

Perhaps speak to your bank? I know certain credit card companies can cover you in fraudulent circumstances like this; can banks do the same? Just a thought I had.

Yeah, I just did. They told me that if Paypal can't resolve the issue, that I can call them and they will set up a research claim on the transaction.
Thanks for your help though. Evolution in Eve:

To OP, I'm not extremely experienced with Ebay, but I have used it a few times. You should be able to contact Ebay about this, and they will look into it. If/when they find out that what you're saying is true, they should be able to refund you, ban the seller, and potentially press charges/fine him.

HELLO COMMON SENSE? HELLO? ARE YOU THERE?
there are two main things wrong with what you did.
1) as you pointed out. zero feedback. its not hard to check 2) buying something worth near to 3k frmo ebay and actually agreeing not to pick it up in person. i have a personal rule of myself never to buy anything worth more than ú20 from ebay, or at least close to that amount. if i get scammed, things may not be done about it and im only out of pocket four hours wages. however, there are times when there are large amounts of money will have to be exchanged. and for this, i give this advice. NEVER ACCEPT POSTAGE. EVER. any item worth even over ú200 ish is worth picking up in person. ( i live in the UK though, maybe a bit more worth for US). in this case, 3 grand is easily enough to warrant a personal pickup. this way, cash will be exchanged there an then, as you can personally see the itme there right inf ront of you, as described and tested in front of you. remember it.

eBay has sooooooo many scammers.. Met this girl once, she and her bf they scammed ebay for a living.. They made a fake escrow site and sold flashy items at ebay slightly underpriced, used the escrow site to give the buyer a feeling of security and then they ran off with his/her moneh.. 4-6k weekly o0.
U should use a well known and respected escrow service for everything above 200 tbh..
4-6k a week isn't bad tho when you're only like 20 years old. I should change profession ;p

I distinctly remember reading about a guy who was scammed via Paypal whilst paying for a WoW account (serves him right say the EVE-O community but nevertheless..).
Anyhow, by checking out the guys name as given through Paypal he managed to track him down using the Yellow Pages. After finding his address and phone number, well, really the options are endless.
Do some investigating and don't be surprised if nothing turns up but you never know. The guy could quite possibly live just 2 blocks away and while I'd never justify or recommend physical violence I'm sure that what we don't know won't hurt us.................as much as it hurts him

Escrow scammers!
I've lost some money to people on e-bay too, but the rule is "Don't spend it if you can't afford to lose it". Wait, that sounds familiar somehow..... ----------

Well, I use to sell things on eBay quite often, until three purchases went wrong and I clearly put in the description of the item, "Do not bid unless you are certain you can buy the item". But still, They bought the items and never sent the money. Therefore I lose money for putting the item up for sale. On a lighter note.. I love your sig!

solved by the term "item will be sent once payment is recieved"
