Im really enjoying the usefullness that the new scanner is bringing. Im glad to have been the first ever to have brought up the issue of a box with a list of targets rather than use radar during beta! :)
Im not sure why there exists two seperate scanning windows for 'auto' and 'name'. Actually dont like there being so many tabs at all in there, its too tedious.
The lists continue not to be sorted properly with regards to roman numerials.
'Type in search string' text continues to exist and is plainly wrong for most users. string is a programming word. I dont even think you need anything there, it already says 'search'.
There is no 'info' button in the 'auto' list.
State: The word itself doesnt say much to me and sounds more like a programming terminology than anything else.
If I have multiple markings, since the red marks are identical, I dont know what means what, unless I memorized their position in the list.
I think other techniques could be experimented on, such as having a mark 'flash' when people fire at you. If the mark has targetted me, put a red cross hair over it, if its in targetting range, have the mark glow a stronger red (current marks can dim more). When I target it, the red mark now has 4 dots in the corners like a target lock in space looks like.

The marks should be in different colors to indicate what they mean and they should always display and blink when a case is true (ie your ship is locked or a threat is nearby). Would look better IMO and you would see what each of those LEDs indicates. I¦d also like to be able to sort the auto-scanner by type so that when I set it to display stargates or something they always appear below ships when there are ships nearby.
Then what I¦d like to see is the armor and shieldstatus of targeted ships displayed in the scanner. At least there should be an option to display something like this in a seperate column. That way you could basically get rid of those huge targeting icons since they tend to clutter up the screen once you have more than 4 targets locked.
Another option I¦d like to see is bookmarks displayed in the scanner based on your current location. For example when you¦re going through the Amarr system and you have bookmarks set in Amarr, the scanner should display those just like any other location. You should be able to toggle this of course. This would save you the hassle of having to open the people'n'places window just for the bookmarks.
The last option I¦d like to see is a keyboard shortcut to bring the scanner window under your mouse. You press the shortcut and the scanner-window is immediately moved under your mousecoursor with the first entry in the list centered under your mouse. This way you can access the scanner without having to move the mouse over to the window. A second press of that shortcut should bring the window back to its original position.

Perhaps having tabs for various classes of object would help?
The scanner is redundant in open space, and far too crowded in belts. If there were different tabs for asteroids, cargo containers, ships, hostile contacts, and (maybe) friendly contacts, I believe the scanner would be more useful and more used...

(edit: removed the stupid part which was completely wrong =)
... While at the subject of UI nightmare, how about getting rid of the speed dial which --with single exception i know of-- no one ever uses except by mistake.... and using that space for much larger buttons to switch between high, middle and low slots?..

There are different colors to use on the scanner. Been in since 1305 I belive. Under the setting tab. Right click on the red bar and choose a color, or even if you want it to blink.
Love this new feature. Even more so then the "look at" option
