Edited by: Deikan Frost on 09/12/2006 23:46:11 Can we have some photos of your data center's server room? I'm curious to see what your server clusters look like and how many there are... some sort of virtual tour? Anything?

I doubt it's competition related when CCP go out of their way to shout about how much cash they're blowing on IBM tech these days

don't think there would be any security issues, since:
a) we don't know the address of where they host thier servers at, and b) as the servers are COTS (computers off the shelf), the only "secure" thing about them would be all of the 0's and 1's going through them, which of course, we cannot see unless, of course, you're neo
but yea, would be pretty sweet to see what the largest MMO datacenter would look like.

just imagine a room with craploads of servers all tangled up in wires....maybe some dudes in kilts frowning at a few readout stations here and there.

Most ISP's and Server Providers that respect themselves will showcase their server room to show how good they are... I'm sure CCP's server room is not small and has several racks of IBM servers stacked up with cooling system and anti-static floors and all.. I've physically seen several data centers in my years (I'm into Server administration myself) so I'm not asking this cause I'm curious to see what a "generic" server room looks like, I want to see how CCP's look like.
Probably something like this: Linkage

Yeh, thats what most of them look like (well, the ones that host many different companies) ... if they pay extra they get their own cage. Storage equipment normally is not 19" rackable and ends up in a row by itself. Dont know if the Tranquility cluster is racked or comes in IBM proprietry frames ...
And, afaicr the stuff is in Telehouse in East India Dock.
alas, poor risk vs reward, I knew you well

Most Datacenters will only allow special Photos for PR and brochures, Cameras arent even alloed into the secured server areas.

yep, the IBM datacenter I work in is dbl secure meaning I have to badge in the front door, then use a different bio(fingerprint) badge/reader to get in the 2nd area add to that, if they(security) even SEE a camera, the person holding it is gone
that said, my bet is the black rack hardware is probably what CCP's looks like(it's the generic look of IBM server hardware)

Well you would be hardly mistaken to think that this is the world's largest MMO datacenter.....
First, it is probably only 2, maybe 3 racks. That is the joy of blades, it saves space. RAMSAN doesn't take up that much room either, probably 4 or 5 U of rackspace.
Second, Second Life has a larger cluster. Then you have blizzard, etc which are all much larger.
SoE's dev lab itself is much larger, and no doubt production is much larger seeing as each of their clusters are larger.
Not to be said as an insult, it is just reality.
As for handing out pictures, I doubt CCP even has them or even knows about their gear if they completely outsourced it as a managed service. From a security perspective, no, their isn't any reason to hide anything :)

They are hosted in one of the Level3 hosting sites in London in their own racks. Yeah, one of those datacenters with self-aware emergency power supplies (Marvin-style) and none-functional generators as backup.
There have been photoes and a couple of devblogs about the server farm and the equipment.
I think you might find what you're looking for about one year ago when ccp moved from Simin to Level3 as host/backbone. The info about the first RamSAN was a bit erlier (October?), the move to the new datacenter a bit later lasting into this year.
We're still waiting for the improved speed and stability and the effect of the multihoming option to different backbones. So far we can connect through Level3, Level3, and Level3 ... as long as Level3 doesn't bug out on the way. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

The server room most certainly looks like this.
Well they have said at least once the eve cluster would be an complicated network and i think this tells it all .

Last year during an extended downtime I managed to infiltrate CCP Headquarters.
Using only a black magic marker and a tube of McLean's toothpaste I sucessfully disguised myself as Oveur while tying him up in Hellmar's bongade cupboard and gagging him with wrangler's patented jock strap.
This photographic evidence was the result of years of hard infiltration work, and displays an accurate portrayal of server downtime at CCP :
