Hello, Im brand new to EVE.
I made a character last night, a Gallente Intaki. I chose stats in Wisdom and Intelligence, the Charisma trait, and Business oriented choices.
I am hoping to learn trading, and work on that. Typically I have about 2 hours 4 to 5 nights a week and thought trading might suit me well.
My question is - which path should I approach in terms of race, or ship?
How should I go about this?
Thank you for your time in helping to show me a path... [:D

Any race's industrial ship should be sufficient for a trader, since your main use for a ship will be to move cargo from a location where you can buy it cheap to a location where you can sell it for more money.
Of course, a lot of trading is just making buy orders for something cheap, and then making sell orders high, and not moving the stuff at all.
Buy the skill Broker Relations when you have the cash; you'll be putting up a lot of orders.

Edited by: Zin Rathbone on 10/12/2006 22:32:01 There are several types of trading. You can buy npc trade goods, haul them to a station that will pay more for them, and sell them. For that you need an industrail (each race has one) and a bankroll. There is also module and ship trading, in which you put out buy orders, and hopefull sell it later for more cash, possibly moving things to a trade hub as a middle step. Again, an industrial for hauling and a fat wallet. The more you have to invest, the more you might make.
You need to build up a moderate bankroll to start. For this you might look at mining or courier missions from npc agents. Start with a frig with a big cargo hold and hopefully a mining bonus.
If you are hauling goods, do not fly by autopilot. Manually warp to zero to each gate and manually jump, its sooooo much faster. Trading the npc market is now potentially much more profitable in terms of isk per hour played because travel is so much faster after the revelations patch.

I'll second the part on not using autopilot. I can't believe how much time I wasted on that before switching to the manual jump method. I just keep a special overview filter with nothing but stargates and players when I'm transiting from jump to jump, and just use that to make life easier.

This seems kind of risky.

How so? I will admit I'm fairly new, so curious what I'm doing incorrectly. I figured by only having ships and stargates I'd be safe since ships could attack me and I'd keep an eye on them.
EDIT -- and sorry, this is Zankoku from before. I didn't pick the right char when I posted.

Edited by: Radio Trottoir on 11/12/2006 03:49:10 Thank you for the advice. I will make a point to jump to zero.. what changed there with the Revelations patch?j
Broker Relations... my character has that at IV automatically, I believe I have around 480k SP in the trade box. Im skilling up learning at the moment, because while I came out with Empathy IV, and Analytical Mind III, my actual Learning skill was at I.
I found someone ingame who recommended the BIO of Denise Ashley.. does anyone know any other good traders BIOs?
Another person recommended I learn the Iteron skill. This is the Gallente Industrial ship which I think is the right ship...

Ahh, tis tough to be a new trader, but welcome to a rewarding career. Consider joining channel "trader's academy" it was set up by the Daikoku Trade Syndicate for helping those newer players to learn the ins and outs of trading.
The trade skills make life easier, but never forget ships. Trading in a small fast frigate moving about lowsec can be just as much fun and profitable as whaling your way around empire (no really :) )
Enjoy the traders life,
Jade

The Gallente cargo ship line is arguably the best as it includes the Iteron MkV, the largest industrial. Beyond that lie two transport ships (armoured cargo carriers) and the giant freighter.
In terms of skills, obviously you'll be going for the Trading ones. Beyond that I'd look for general skills that improve speed, agility, defense, anything that will stop Mr Evil Pirate from podding you. They will also of course help with your own warships, unless you intend to be a total carebear and not beat up on anyone!
There is a sticky on the Market Discussions forum that leads to good though in places outdated advice on Trading.
Golden Rules: Everything that can be bought and sold can be traded. Most pilots in Eve are here to blow up ships. They want to spend zero time trading, and only mine or mission run to earn ISK to buy more ships. Markets often open up when a trader goes out of business. Come back later.

If you are going to be moving around expensive items (ie. the value of your cargo is over 50M ISK) and you don't require a lot of cargo space, you might want to consider using a battleship with shield extenders in the mids (the Raven is a good choice for this). Indutrial ships can be easily destroyed in highsec by someone suiciding with a battleship or a few Caracals.
