Looks like "Crucible" has been a very successful expansion and re-heated the interest of many former EVE players.
This conclusion comes out of some numbers I'm seing regarding EVEMon. Since we released EVEMon 1.5.3 on 7th December 2011 (EVEMon update for Crucible), we had close to 50000 downloads in 1 day, when we normally reach that number in a 10-15 days period.
I'm sure that Mr. Hilmar (CCP CEO) has already noticed that by the spike on reactivated subscriptions and PCU.
In conclusion, the "lesson was learned" (I'm sure Mr Hilmar and Mr Arnar know what I'm talking about), so all CCP staff deserves a "Well done, guys" from all us members of the EVE community.

And thanks to the EveMon team for such a smooth update (was among the 50000).
I can only hope that CCP learned a long term lesson from that and continues developing expansions closer to the heart of Eves playerbase. And I hope they will monitor the forums more closely so they can profit from the playerknowledge of what might or might not work for Eve in the way it is planned. |

Posting in a thread about software that works, and that I use, like, trust and recommend wholeheartedly for a change.
Oh wait, this is just authored by an EVEMon guy, it's not an EVEMon thread. NVM then.
If you think CCP has learned their lesson, you don't understand human nature and you haven't really been paying attention.
You'll know CCP has learned their lesson when:
The overview works every time. Fundamental game mechanics (like warping) work every time.
Aurum is gone.
Fearless is a newsletter that CCP would be happy to let its customers read. (In fact, there should be no internal correspondence that would outrage the playerbase. If you're doing something that you know would **** us off if we found out, stop doing it!)
CCP stops meddling in the in-game economy (particularly the PLEX market) and fully discloses any 'exceptions' to that policy.
The QEN returns with all the old information and more.
ISK faucets roughly match up with ISK sinks.
CCP stops using anonymous 'white knight' alts on forums.
CCP stops taking assclown CSM members seriously, even if they're in the same alliance as the lead CCP developer.
CCP makes reasonably informative disclosures about what steps they've taken to combat bots and botting. ('Trust me, it's complicated, just press that placebo button.' doesn't count.)
Like I said, a long way from learning their lesson. But realistically, do you expected fully formed adults to change? To develop integrity, pride in the product they sell, a commitment to the virtual world (sandbox) of New Eden? Good luck with that. |

Traffic in the forums is generally up too, with a fair amount of rather newbie threads in some sections. Not quite up to the level back in the heydays, but at least it isn't slipping.

No MMOs, except perhaps the perpetual underdog Perpetuum, and the forever in development Infinity (I see what I did there) are competition for EVE, as those are the only other two sandbox MMOs that I know of. As you're undoubtedly referring to The Old Republic in regard to new MMOs this month, I think you should keep in mind that in EVE's eight years, it has faced numerous juggernaut MMOs, and none of them have affected EVE's subscription base in a noticeable way. In all likelihood, the only thing that will ever kill EVE is CCP (as they almost did this past Summer). No other MMORPG developers are putting out products that are in anyway near the quality, potential, or substance of EVE. Their products are barely in the same genre or class as EVE (which made it all the more frustrating to see CCP stoop to their level in the past year).
As for Crucible being successful, it does appear so. I can only hope that CCP remembers any lessons it learned from its misadventures in neglecting EVE in the pursuit of space Barbies and MTs, and never repeats those mistakes. |

I still like space barbies. Wasnt bad they started it in the first place, lots of players anxiously awaited WiS. Problem is they released a WiS that wasnt 10% of what they promised us on on top of that they made (and still make) rediculous NeX prices. Is still wish to dress up my avatars and show other people how cute (and filthy rich) I am. :D |

The release that we got wasn't even "10%" of what Incarna should have been. It was a fraction of a percent. That said, I get a certain joy dressing up my space ship guy too. |

Some of those like mine, were cautionary and somewhat sardonic. I still believe CCP is still shaking, and they really need to get their act together. I believe some members of the total community, outside those that post here regularly are still undecided.
I know a lot of people that went to X named MMO's or quit altogether and just gave EVE the finger, "lot" being 6+ accounts and in a sense its a bit of a cascade effect still splashing around as people won't keep endorsing the game or painting it in nice details for new people to enjoy.
Winter is here already, and you can see the frost, on my part I'm still a bit angry but willing to give CCP another chance for the time being, because I still want to believe.
Everything team Papercuts did should have been the NORM for the past 2 years. And that's why I am a bit appalled at how CCP was behaving.
The part I dislike about all of this is seeing what the next move on their part will be. Since I can no longer trust them enough despite my best intentions in taking the game in a way that will keep it thriving.
I don't think EVE will never die, Meridian 59 is still out there, eve will always have a core cadre of players, but seeing it downgraded another notch would be a bit too much for me.
Anyway, as it is now, it's a matter of patience and seeing what their next move will be. |

Crucible's definitely the best patch I've seen, but I've only been playing since just after Apocrypha released. Considering it's the one they've had the least dev time to do, that's pretty exceptional.
While I would guess their subscription numbers are up nicely, player activity still looks uncertain. Going by the second graph HERE, they've stopped the blood loss, but the patient may still be ill.
Overall, it goes to show how much value you can get out of putting some time into ideas that have been floating around for YEARS now... |
