Edited by: Youko Iblis on 11/12/2006 05:45:58 Edited by: Youko Iblis on 11/12/2006 05:40:18 Call me stupid if you'd like... Call me an Idiot... I'm already beating myself up over it, and even more so because of the responses I got back from the petition I filed...
From what CCP has told me, the Contract Scams are completely Legit and not an Exploit... So Please don't fall for them like I just did... This is probably just another repeat of other messages, but I want to make sure it gets out...
I'm out almost a billion isk because of it - yep I'm an stupid sucker, so please don't comment on that fact, I already know... I guess if I can blame it on anything it's because I'm still a noob at heart and I still havn't gotten the hang of contracts with the new expansion and the fact that I seldom come here to the forums (guess I may start looking more now)...
The scam that I fell for is basically someone selling something through a Contract (Freeform is the primary scam method from what I've been told), that shows the information about an item that does not exist (not even a fake item, just some text and a believable link to the information about the item just as if they actually had the item).
I do not know of this for sure; but I have been told that if anyone sells an item, force the issue and request an Item exchange since you can't fool these types of contracts - or so I've been told. If anyone who reads this knows for sure, please comment for me and for everyone else.
For those interested in pursuing this path of Contract Scams (since it's not an exploit and apparently not punishable) here's CCP's response about it.
1st response:
Quote: "Hi.
Sadly, using freeform contracts in this manner is not considered an exploit or a bug. Players can always see that the contract holds no items at all, only text.
As explained here: http://support.eve-online.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=324 "
2nd response:
Quote: "Hi.
Indeed, it is like making a promise but not fulfilling it. If you have no self-esteem, you are not forced to keep your word. I agree that it is particularly shameful, but please understand that I stay of little or no use to you as there is unfortunately no server errors or bugs implied in the process.
Thanks for your understanding."
That was their responses to me about it...
I guess I was under the impression these new contracts would solve the issue of being scammed... Apparently this is an issue I was mistaken about... Not to mention it looked like a valid item to me (my mistake again)...
So please don't fall for this... especially since the freeform makes it sound as if one side faults or cancels (which unless accepting is a method of faulting) the collateral in question is refunded...
Thanks for your time...

Only in Eve, where griefing is positively encouraged, could a scammable Escrow system be replaced with a new Contracts system which is STILL not watertight!

Sorry for your loss. How do you price an item that doesn't exist? What was the name of the scammer?

I believe the item being sold is actually nothing, but there is a pic of the item and link to its information in the description section, is this correct?

Simply do not purchase off a "freeform" contract type , and you are pretty safe.

I had the same issue today, a freeform contract that looked to good to be true. I asked in help channel and was told by coloured text that as long as it was not for a BPO I would be OK. I practised a freeform with a corp mate and found that although they look legit (link and all) they ain't. So I binned the contract but I did come close to loosing a lot of my ISK.

hehe yep, scamming is still in the game but so is the little warning window before u hit the yes button.
READ before u hit the button and u should be ok.
seen some scams of people offering like tons of zyd for a cheapo prize (say 3.3k per unit for 100000 units) while in fact it is only 1 (ONE) unit of zyd for 330 mill.
U have been warned Resized tag... hope this pleases the tag ninjas from ccp :p

For the love of all that is holy, enough with the 'OMG YOU CAN SCAM WITH CONTRACTS' threads.
Contracts replaced escrow, not human stupidity.
