I recently got attacked in a .4 space by a battlecruiser with a lot of drones. The battlecruiser never even fired a shot at me and stayed a good distance away as a matter of fact. However, the drones tore me apart rather quickly. I had 5 tech 2 launchers and light missiles and I don't think I even blew one up! What works best to defend against drones?

Rockets are most effective against drones, but light missiles should also be effective. A target painter will help increase teh damage done to them even more.
Smartbombs will also clear away drones pretty fast, but be careful where you use them.

The best defense is either:
1. your own drones to kill theirs
2. tank them and kill the ship that is using them
3. out run them
If u are in a small ship u can target the drones and small guns pop them pretty fast, but yeah, a good drone skilled pilot, with a drone ship stings... a lot...
As a frigate pilot if i see drones i tend to make a quick exit unless needed for the scramble..

5 tech 2 launchers.. Let me guess.. Caracal-hull with assaults? They don't deal damage fast enough to kill medium drones. Your best best was to warp out.

If you don't have small missiles/rockets and you don't have guns then those suckers are gonna be hard as heck to kill.
Smartbombs tend to rip 'em apart, but remember that drones tend to obey "Return to Drone Bay" with greater alacrity now, and thus pulling drones back to the bay and re-launching might be a viable tactic for an attacker within Scramble range. (Don't know personally). So you'd use a ton of Cap on the smartbombs, but only save yourself the time it takes him to recall/resend the drones.
If you've got guns, then you've gotta get their transversal down. Drone tracking is usually good enough to hit you while they orbit, while you'll have it rough hitting them. Travelling in a straight line might prevent drones from whirling around you if you've got enough velocity, while not increasing their damage overmuch. That could let you peg the drones with guns easier and give you a better chance of bringing 'em down.
I typically fly drone boats myself, so unfortunately I'm really not sure. This is just the kind of stuff I worry about when sending in the clowns.
