Locking has just gotten a lot worse with the "look at" feature.
Perhaps I'm the only one, but when I want to quickly lock a target, I look for "lock" in the RMB list. Incidently "lock target" is always is right next to "look at", the only difference being a small variation in the shape of one of the letters in the key-word -- "lock" vs. "look". Thus it now takes me longer to lock since I have to consider which one I should select. In combat, I don't have time for that -- I need to initate a lock NOW. What's next? An "100k tangent" option right next to "lock target" and "look at" (to, say, orbit at 100km)?
Locking is the single most important feature, even more important than "approach" which has it's own shortcut (double click). Pop-up windows are a crutch to proper UI design; It's the place where you put infrequently used and less critical features. It shouldn't be the only way to initate a lock.
With the lack of command queueing, this is even worse. Need a lock? Right-click on ship, select "lock target"... unable to lock due to warp-in. Right-click on ship, select "lock target"... still unable to lock due to warp-in. etc.
Funny thing: my mouse has 3 buttons (well, actually 4). EVE only uses 2. What gives?? Can we please have an option to assign "lock target" to the middle mouse button? The current interface is insufficent and is drivin me and a lot of other people nuts.

You make some very good points. I haven't looked into it a whole lot but is it possible to bind keyboard shortcuts to something? Or maybe a toggle feature where you, for example, hold down the L key when double clicking and it will lock instead of approach.
You also make a very good point about the small period after warp where nothing is possible. It would be nice to have some sort of indicator as to when that time is over.

Edited by: Hume Cestus on 22/11/2003 10:55:57 I had the same problem, now I just go for the longer one and I'm fine. Look at the shape of the two words instead of the letters is how I do it.

Press short-cut for module activation, click on ship you want to lock. Wait. Kill.

Edited by: Lithorus on 22/11/2003 13:32:21 The worst thing is that we have warned the devs in here about this time and time again for the past month. No reactions from them.
No doubt it's a cool feature but the wording "look at" and the place in the RMB menu is very bad combinations.
Alternative to your idea, there could be an option to change the action of double clicking an object. Eg. double clicking a ship will produce either "approach"/"lock target"/"show info" action. Not everyone has a third(most probably has it on the mouse wheel which can make it inconvenient to use) and fourth mouse button, but everyone can double click.

Patch 1308 on Chaos has a very nice Auto-Scanner feature that will show you your available "targets" in a window you can "Pin" to your HUD which should make it faster to get a target lock even though you still need to right click the mouse to get a lock. You could also set the number of targets you auto-target back (the wording is terrible in-game) to say 5 from the 1 you get by default so your ship will automatically target those who target you - okay so this is a purely defensive action because you want to be the first to target and fire but in case you get distracted your ship can help you out some.
My problem with the pop-up menu system is that the pop-up menus can lose track of the mouse and the pop-up gets dismissed before an option has been selected even while the mouse is still hovering over part of the menu. The fix would seem to me to be that the pop-up menu should remain open as long as the mouse is within the vicinity of the pop-up menu's boundaries to allow the user to still select an option before being dismissed.
The weakest part of EVE's user interface is the use of the keyboard, IMHO, other games make very good use of the keyboard or allow the user to modify the keyboard shortcuts but EVE doesn't do this or doesn't do this very effectively. The lamest keyboard related game feature is that you must use the Ctrl or Alt keys to activate any shortcuts you choose to use that are user-defined - this blows ! The only reason I can see for this is that this is the only way the game can figure out the user is not actually typing text into a chat window since you can type text into a chat window at almost any time even when that window doesn't have input focus (input focus is a Windows thing rather than a Unix thing but EVE is a Windows based game so it should adhere to Windows based User Interface Rules).

Different colors for the important menue commands may help from clicking the wrong command.

It would be nice to have the right-click menu customizable... or anything else ui wise for that matter. It would solve so many issues.

I agree on almost all of above. I wonder if devs ever read this board...

I think they sure do read the forum only never respond to everyone except the very important things else they hadnt had any time to program if they needed to respond to everything. ______________________ I am just a crazy cow |

LOL, not to mention that the more they post the more they would invite debate into what they say, especially from people who have no clue what a logical argument is or when to stop talking :-)

Would be nice to have a set of user defined hot keys. Ie, UI-buttons that a user may route to certain functions (lock, open cargo, dock, launch drones, keep at range, for example). The buttons would be in a window that u could minimize, turn off, resize etc. |
