Hey all! I started my trial tesyerday night and am currently mining with a navitas with 2 basic cargo expanders and 2 miner I¦s
I heard of people mining into cans (containers, jet cans..) and heard that they give you extra space in cargo but how do i go about doing that?
Do i fill my cargo, jettison some and send it into the can then do the same till i have enough cans to fill up my cargo hold then shove all the cans in there?
or do i buy the containers from the market like large containers?
I¦d also appreciate any other mining tips to speed things up and be more efficient...
Oh and if any can explain how survey scanners work i activate it then i get a list of vartious materials but how do i find where they are i don¦t see any asteroids in the overview with those materials...

The first method (jettison ore into a container until you have enough to fill up your industrial ship's cargo) is called jet canning. Jet cans can hold 27.5k m^3 of ore, so even the best deep space transport needs to use secure containers to carry all of it in one trip.
The secure containers, when anchored and passworded are more... er... well, they're more secure, as nobody but you can access it. Unfortunately, the biggest can only hold 3.9k m^3 of ore, and they can't be put within 5km of any other object, so it's harder to mine with them.
Survey scanners are awesome for knowing how much ore is left in a given asteroid, so you don't waste a full minute chewing on an asteroid with two m^3 left. You find the specific asteroid by right-clicking it from the list of results and locking it (hint: if you don't get the option, then that means it's already locked and you're probably mining it ).
To get the asteroids on your overview, you need to load the asteroids overview filter (I think everybody comes with that), or manually set your overview to show asteroids by right-clicking the triangle by your overview, going to overview settings, and making sure the asteroids you want to see.

Get your cargo just partially full, and jettison the ore. It'll come out in a 27,500 m3 can that lives a short time. As you get more ore, put it into the can. Rename the can to extend its life from one hour to two. The can's volume is much bigger than your ship's, so you'll need to get a larger capacity vehicle to haul the contents to the station.

What you are talking about is jetcan mining.
What oyu do is mine a cycle and then jettison it. Open the can and I always rename it with my name and the time because they will only last from 1 to 2 hours before popping. Then you can coninually mine and move the ore from your hold to the can. This gives you 27500m3 of space.
Your problem will be the next step however. You have to haul it. Go back to your station and swap ships. This is normally done with an industrial ship such as an Iteron. You most likely do not have the skills or isk to have a hauler yet.
You can not put a jetcan in your cargo hold. It is possible to put a container of sme size in your hold but this only gives you a bit more. For instance the Huge Cargo Container takes up 3000m3 but holds 3900m3 so you gain 900m3.
My suggestion to you if you want to continue to mine is to train up industrial and buy an Iteron I or II then procede to jetcan mine.
Any question convo me in game and I'll be glad to help you.
