Something some friends were talking about, apparently some mission roids now have a chance to proc a 50km 500hp smartbomb explosion on a mining cycle completion? I haven't got any other details, but that sounds nasty. Anyone come across this?
Could kill a scythe in one unlucky cycle if that's the case.

Yes found this today ... blockade, lots of prox and plagu astroids.. every one mined with smart bombs... the thing got me was not the fact they were 'trapped' but the fact they were laced.. the more you mined the more frquently they went off (i got hit 4x 500 in on go at one point).
yes trap them fine but lets not be unrealistic about them.. if a smart bomb went off it would detonate all the others and damage structures around it.. yes... so maybe 1-3 smarts on an astroid but not unlimited.
I mined about 10km3 and got bored and left.

Hey, thats great! It means we just go in with miners fitted and start mining to complete the missions with roids in it. No more shooting for players, the roids get it done way faster. :-)) -- |

Edited by: Dolly Parton on 15/12/2006 14:00:00 Edited by: Dolly Parton on 15/12/2006 13:58:17 does anyone know which type of damage these roids are doing? i would like to set up my tank for them instead of Sanashas. I always wondered how CCP would make mining more exciting, but damn roids fighting back, never saw that coming

Hehe it's a fact, the smartbombs do 500 EM damage almost every cycle:)
it really is funny but easy to mine with a support cruiser feeding you shields and/or armor :D
i just wouldn't want to try this with a cruiser fitted with some 5-6 miner II's lol 6* 500 EM damage every 60 sec would really be some challenge to tank hahaha
Message > Someone triggered a hidden trap placed on one of the asteroids here. The trap causes a powerful smartbomb to go off, damaging many ships in the vicinity.
(combat) <color=0xffbb6600>Beacon hits you, doing 423.7 damage. (some em-resist there for the retriever i think)
hehe well done CCP for some good laughs on that one :D

This doesn't sound like fun. Can't use Mining Drones if that's the case. Since it's EM damage if you use an Osprey like me you can probably tank it using a shield hardener & a med booster but if you get unlucky & take 3 hits in succession it could get a bit hairy.
There needs to be some sort of limit on the time between detonations if there isn't already. Infact why would a 'roid detonate repeatedly? Surely something of this magnitude (50km is is more than 8 times the range of a Large T2 Smartbomb) should be a 1 shot thing. It'd also RP a bit easier, like the mission rats have left mines (as in the exploding type) on the 'roids to hamper any clean up attempts etc.
A related question, I used to mine the Omber 'roid in Human Cattle 5/5 whenever I got the mission using an Osprey with 3 Miner II's & 4 Mining Drone I's which would take me 2 hours to fill 2 jetcans. I'm about to switch to level 4 missions & was wondering whether I should train up to fly a Retriever if there are many good 'roids to mine (good=omber/kernite or better) because I'd like to be able to mine out the 'roids into cans & turn the mission in before the bonus timer is up. I'm not a miner at all outside of the Human Cattle 5/5 Omber so it'd take me about 9 days & about 12 million ISK to buy & fly a Retriever with 2 Strip Miner I's hence it'd be good to know if it's worth doing it or just sticking with the Osprey with Miner II's. --- Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! |

Rogue Slave trader 2/2 has 200k omber that respawns daily if you don't complete the mission
Enemies Abound 1/5 has ~ 1.2m omber and 350k kernite that does not respawn (as you have to complete the mission objective to mine it safely)

Once the mission is flagged complete you will always get the bonus no matter how late you turn it in.
In the end a retriever doesn't do that much better than an osprey, probably not worth it unless you grab a covetor.

I didn't know the thing about the mission complete flag, that's pretty useful to know (it comes up in Human Cattle 5/5 as soon as you get to the deadspace pocket with the Omber).
With the amounts of ore you quote I reckon it's a good idea to go straight for a Covetor as 1 operation will more than pay back the initial investment. The only problem is it will take me 33.5 days just to train Astrogeology V & Mining Barge V so I think I'll get the Retriever first & use it while I train for the Covetor since the modules would be used on both & I could resell the Retriever on the market for only a 1-2 million loss.
Thanks for the help as always Al. Not seen you in *the* channel for a while, hope you're still fighting the good fight. --- Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! |

Glad I have a hulk to tank the roids..
Oh please tell me that 5 mining drones would set off 5 50k smart bombs!!! if so I have a new way to clear out a mission read fast....
