Why have CCP Devs taken to using Reddit more than the official Eve-O forums?
Compared to 2-3 years ago, these forums are dead, yet when I read articles on 3rd party websites or listen to podcasts, I'm inundated with "CCP [insert name] said on Reddit" or "blah blah was confirmed by CCP [insert name] on a Reddit post".
Have CCP abandoned their own forums in favour of Reddit?
BTW, serious question, not a rant.

I agree with OP. Reddit is a cesspit populated by the obnoxious vocal minority of EVE. Listening to them will kill the game eventually. The same minority that convinced CCP Walking in Stations was somehow not wanted by the community and yet there are threads with thousands of supporters for it. Just a single example.
IMO devs should be free to post wherever they choose, but respond to players and/or take player feedback only on the official forums. |

As a counter to your statement, I would argue that using the long established "CCP [insert name]" as their username or actively identifying themselves as a CCP employee whilst taking part in a discussion about a CCP game means that they're never truly "off the clock".

That is like, a no brainer. From what I've seen, the vocal minority on reddit and other player sites (kugu/shitheap) who derailed every discussion are 'gamers'. Often very young ones (or just juvenile/immature) gobbing off with memes to show off to their peers. But they're like locusts moving from alliance to alliance (or game to game) and they're not particularly loyal to anyone. They love attacking CCP (for street cred, yo) and they're more or less brainless ninnies nobody should pay any attention to. But they are damn noisy.
The rest of us are EvE players. There is a difference. A lot of us like each other, regardless of affiliation. Tbh I think we're the core playerbase, and the rest are trash. If they can't be converted (and we should try) they should be kicked. To Star Citizen or w/e.
Also, whenever I post I take into account the comments/attitude of people I've spoken to ingame rather than just gobbing off for a few cheap karma points. So that non vocal majority is represented. Not just me doing it either.

If I take the approach of THIS IS JUST A GAME, the vocal majority here deffend, then I must say, anyone who plays eve is an EVE Player.
If I take the approach of THIS IS JUST A GAME, then no matter how or why I play eve, anything here is, just a game, therefore it has no impact on anything else besides the game itself.
So, if I dont take the approach of "THIS IS JUST A GAME", it doesnt matter who does, they dont speak for me.
Since I play EVE and I dont take the approach of "THIS IS JUST A GAME", and so does other people, their views are also part of the spectrum of views.
When we take a look closely to what is said around, I am pretty sure that the prevailing voice here and there are just focused on one tiny part of the spectrum of views from people who plays EVE.
Since the game priviledges all of them, priviledging one of them automatically turns against the other.
As I said before, I feel that CCP does the right thing when they do the right ammount of things that appeal to all the views, and regardless of that, there still people who thinks EVE should priviledge either minority to "save the game".

At Reddit, there is no minority, they all post thus vocal. That is the sole purpose of their site.
Of course both have lurkers, but that is still not considered the majority or minority, and often not even actual members of a community.

Rarely ever see a CCP Dev interacting with the playerbase here in their own 'Official' forums yet we constantly hear about them doing it on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Podcasts, etc.

No actually. Not hyperbole. I do find the negativity in the Eve forums extraordinary. This is a great game run by a great company, but one rarely hears that. Every thread on the topic is quickly filled with comments about how they are idiots who don't care and couldn't succeed if they did. Anbd many, many threads that are not even about CCP devolve into the same.
I love this game. I see the flaws, but that is true of every game, and I also recognize the incredible complexity of the challenge CCP faces in managing all of this. I think they manage it as well as ANY team could be expected to.
You may not find the negativity to extraordinary, but I do. The Eve forums are the single most negative community I participate in. I tolerate it only because of the great wealth of knowledge that is here.

Anyway, I looked at that link you posted and picked a thread at random. Out of 14 pages there was only one 'interaction' from CCP on page 3. The same can be said for most of the other threads in these forums.

The idea of a centralized web forum, such as this, is falling to the wayside. Handheld devices and apps along with a younger generation habitually being spread out on social media are also killing centralized forums. This forum concept, such as is delivered here, is dated and reminiscent of the 1990s. Most players don't use it, but a lot of people, players or not, use Reddit (and Voat, 8Chan, Twitter, FB, etc)
Ever try accessing these forums from a smart phone? Might as well be fueling a fighter jet with coal.
I think in the future it'll be cheaper to use public forum sub-sections and pay for advertising space there and game companies won't even bother with player forums.

I don't see anything wrong with it, though I come from an age of BBS and oh yes the Usenet ,though I know what it is and don't lack understanding of tech trends. But yeah, everyone and their great grandmother are trending on the latest social media venue. But forum type software has been around some 30yrs+ and it's still very well used. It really isn't going to trend out anytime soon like most or all social media sites will. But then I don't have any real big problem with CCP spreading the EVE product name around other sites a bit, as long as they keep us informed here.
DeMichael Crimson wrote:You definitely have trolling down to a 'T' I just "troll" (as some label me) trolls like you, er or really fail trolls. But regardless, always wrong DMC wrong again, at least on the grading curve where CCP does in-fact interact with it's subscribers far more than traditionally among mmo's the past 20yrs or so.
In my book, since their turnaround a few years back, I give them a B. It's part of what keeps me in this game, the forum interaction, the streaming shows, in-game activity, the many irl forums and round tables (fanfest etc), not to mention sticking to old-school style game-play which I appreciate from CCP. They do all that even though you can't please all the people all the time, but it's still not a game for everyone. At least I think that the majority of EVE players (vets) are mature enough to realize that, what ever grade they would give CCP at least at some level of honesty. So yeah I defend them on that (not that I'm anyone here, but still...), and I'm sure some people hate me for it, or get really irritated. But I've been around mmo's long enough to recognize the differences.
But you hate this game for what it is, and most of us already know that, so I'm just wasting my time reasoning I'm sure, only building your anger while you dissect things to pick at or throw out a random "you're wrong!". Have you considered just going to something like eliteD or sc where you can play in a safe-safe environment at your leisure? At least in your case it might do you good.

The signal to noise ratio on these forums is very low. The forums are hijacked by spammers, trolls and packs of posters with (not so) hidden agendas. Back when they were (mostly) contained in CAOD it was workable but these days posting on the forums, even more so as a DEV, is like choosing to do some tap dancing on a minefield. I'm not a fan of Reddit, I don't have an account there, but it's obvious to see that generally conversations tend to be more about the actual subject.
Whether choosing to thus use Reddit is another matter, I'd say that long term it's better to clean up your own forums rather than abandoning them, even more so as (prospective) newbies will check the forums, come to the conclusion it's full of terribleness and simply not bother with the game. |

I too miss the wild west days of... the old forums Gunslingers, cowboy hats, the chance of dying of typhoid, oh good times, good times all! Now I feel a little choked by... say... minimalism *shrugs* and songs of "welcome to the new age" (imagedragons - radioactive), dunno why. I'll stick with Garth, Social Distortion and the man in black, do my best to endure. Can't be worse than trendy social media quite honestly.

My experience of reddit is its cliquish, unmoderated, lacks culpability, and one has to scroll through endless useless "semi-funny hurdur" one-liners that take the discussion nowhere, to pick out the occasional actual relevant and material concise paragraph.
Much of its success lies in people who don't have the patience, coherence or attention-span to process/produce more than one sentence at a time in a post.
Its very superficial, and the content lacks depth.

Eve has talons into the real world such as RMT. Because pilots place such value on their accounts and view them as real world assets they frequently want to talk about issues that will get their thread closed on this forum. Also because pilots accounts are so highly valued every change CCP makes results in a teter-tauter effect to isk & power which has the tendency to make pilots want to vent more so than in other virtual realities and that's just not permitted on these forums.
Pilots value their accounts so they WILL find a place to talk about it. Where pilots go to talk devs will follow them. Freedom always makes for the most illuminating conversations. |

If by "illuminating", you also mean unmoderated anonymous shiptoasting, and enticing devs out to where they can be influenced and are vulnerable, then yes.
Its a dangeous game you suggest. For Devs, because they are at the mercy of posters, and for players, because if a Dev whines to a GM, your ingame account might be banned for something that happened on a 3rd party system.
So the "freedom" you suggest, isnt really that at all.
Imagine if 4chan set up an EVE board. That gives you some idea of the imperative of an official board, and keeping Devs tied to it.

I'm not justifying the devs presence on other forums just explaining it. The illuminating aspect is a natural result of the players themselves being able to speak their minds. |

You've just demonstrated that you don't have a clue how Reddit works. The beauty of that forum is that the crap and detritus sink to the bottom and are easily ignored, whereas the interesting and relevant articles rise to the top, whereas on the Eve-O forums the top is time driven, not quality driven. This doesn't mean there isn't rubbish on Reddir, but you get rid of it much faster than on Eve-O. |

Quite the contrary. In reality, on reddit, its exactly the crap and detritus that is upvoted to the top, whereas someone making the mistake of posting a full paragraph (two would be unthinkable) is ignored and sinks to the bottom.
You confuse popular opinion driven content, with quality.
On reddit the crap floats like a turd that will not flush.
Its indicative of your mentality and what I said about short attention spans, that you would think the tried and tested forum system doesnt float quality. Here, what is at the top, is that which is getting most content from posters. Its not time driven, its content driven. When the thread no longer concerns people, it promptly stops being fed with posts and drops off the board as uninteresting to participate in.
On reddit, what is at the top, is just whatever poop the public upvotes, (or downvotes, or ignores) regardless of contributing to it. Voting is systemically a quantitative measure, not a qualitative one, except as a simple +/- vote. The vote itself provides no content, whereas a post required to keep a thread alive on a forum, is inherently qualitative, and includes content.

Almost all of my posting and forumworrioring is done via smart phone, Kids/college/irl in general necessitate this so It's not entirely unreasonable to do with a decent sized phone with a generous data plan. generally speaking though if I have time to sit at the pc I would actually be playing the game rather than talking about it.

Makes me want to burn things. weird, should be settings on your keyboard app that will shut it off, even iphone does this Or try a different keyboard app, I bought one off google play and use it for all my android devices, has pages of settings and customizations. I have a bluetooth keyboard too, but I just use it for my tablet sometimes, has settings too.
