Anychance of some damage textures? like holes in ships burns parts getting blown off and floating in space , that general thing. kinda like damage textures in "Star Trek Bridge Commander" for those who played it.

It probably would cuase lag with the servers as they are now, but when they bring in sub-system targetting they may add damage to different areas of the ship to show what's be knocked out. -----

This would be nice.
It would not affect lag at all.

It will for sure. When you encounter a ship by any chance, the server will send it's damage-related info along with the ship info (which is probably only the module id now) to your client, and that's a lot more data transfered.
However, visually that will look much more awesome!

Ah, no. With a single integer you get 32 bits of data. That means 1 integer is enough to encode 4.3 billion different levels of ship damage. More likely they would only use 3-4 different levels of visual damage indication, which would only require sending 2 bits of data.
When you are engaged with another player you are already sent his damage status so you woldn't even need any additional information. You are also continuously sending back information about weapons being fired, ship movements, etc...an additional 2 bits here and there would be completely insignificant.

I guess there would be more data than damage levels, such as where it is damaged, and damage types maybe. Also about the encouter thing, isn't it like a pre-load strategy?
Well, anyway, let's leave that to CCP to consider, just give us the graphic FX, and EVE will be more awesome than before. haha

They could just make the damage effects client side so you would see damage on your ship but to other people may see the damage but on a diferent area of your ship this would be no lag and will just make the client determine what damage is done to the outside of the ship, this would also make effects like shield impacts and so on easier to achieve, however bits that break of your ships may have to be server side or just none at all which is fine with me as long as i can see damage and/or holes in my ship. Ya get me :)

Edited by: Ashturi Nagano on 19/12/2006 17:14:03 I don't know why it should add to lag. It could be a clientside application that just adds random damage effects to the ship based on the statistics you're already receiving (shields, armor, hull). Not until we're able to target the various subsections would we have to worry about that information, and that still wouldn't be too hard, as it would be the same method. It's not going to kill anyone if 150 people don't all see the exact same damage effect, right? So, let each individual client just apply them.
EDIT: Sorry, skipped over the post that said the same thing. But, I'm leaving it anyway...just 'cause.

flying particles coming off ships, client-generated, nothing server-side to download, and they can be turned off
people with graphics cards capable of handling it, hit an option, and it's just a random spread of particles.
no lag unless you want it. |

Today I ran to catch the bus, but didn't make it. I believe it was because of lag...
Anyway, interesting idea. A couple of textures (explosion on the left side, right side, top, bottom, etc., let the client judge from where the damage is coming, apply the new texture, and voilß!, damaged ship.)

Sounds cool to me. Being on fire is one of my favorite things to do in EvE (and I'm good at it ), and a little more style to being in bad shape could only heighten the experience. -------------- Civis Ascendant Sum |

I think Oveur mentioned this during this year's fanfest. It's some goal that I THINK he set for 1-2 years with the coming graphics overhaul. Also, yeah, I dont understand why It would lag... CCP has already said that they're enabling that the new gfx stuff be disablable so why wouldn't this?

On very large ships at least it would be nice to have some more specific damage textures for when they get hit. It'd be nice to see dreadnaughts with massive chunks taken out of them by POS guns which then role green as the nano-repairers roll over them.

Client side effects wouldent lag , we have minor damage effects in game now but you need to get your hull damaged to see the flames comming out of your ship, .. now does that cause you lag? "nope it does not" that is damage efects at its weakest lol ...
We want more!!!!

As long as people get the option to turn it off similar to turrent and effects im all for it. However like other folks said it should be all client side doable so the only issue would be your computer. *==================* Fight the bunnies! ...|\_/|.......(\_|) |\<^-^>=@(x-0) \|.uwu........(....) |

my point here is what is the point in client side only. someone else may have damage the same next to you and look perfect.
if your gonna do it, everyone should see it
