I made the mistake of checking out my corp's killboard recently. Since I've joined, I have 28 kills credited to me - but 31 losses. While that's not a horrible record for, say, a baseball team, it's not so hot for a pilot in Eve and I'm starting to contemplate my future. I can't understand how I haven't been kicked out of my corp for ineffectiveness yet.
All I really have interest in doing in this game is PvP. I'm not an old player but not a new one either. I believe that if I was going to "get it" at some point and stop chalking up losses then I would have by now. It's easy to say "Living in 0.0 is hard" but the fact is that there are plenty of pilots with similar skills to mine who do just fine for themselves. I feel that my record is a slight on my corp, a group of people whom I care very much about. I don't want to be known as "the corp loser" and I would rather quit playing the game than not fly with them... so I guess that's what my decision has to be.
No, you guys can't have my stuff. And no, I won't be replying to this thread at all. I expect to be flamed by the usual suspects and I'd just rather say my piece and bow out quietly.
I have no one to blame for my inadequacy but myself.

measuring your effectiveness soley by kills/deaths is stupid. If you lost 31 rifters but destroyed 29 indies then i would say your being pretty effective assuming some of those indies had cargo

In a different game (can't respond to this one.. still in newb corp)..
Our entire server, friend and foe alike regarded me as the "worst SB ever".. hell, even I regarded myself as that .. did my "corp" care? no.. did I care? no...
dude.. its a "game" in that, are you having fun? are you working for the corp on a "salary basis"? or are you in the corp because you like the corpmates / they like you?

As far as I'm concerned, killboard stats don't mean much, so long as your having fun with what your doing.

This game is a learning experienceand the more you pvp the more you learn. So what if you lose a few ships you have fun and its all part of the game.
On a personal note, from having fought you, i would like to say that i think you are a player that has a lot of PVP potential, but i feel that you are like me and take a lot of risks. Some times those risks dont pay off, but sometimes they do and you get excellent kills and experience.
Just keep doing what you are doing mate and before you realise it you will have stepped up a level. Would be a shame to see you leave the game mate

The only question is, what did you learn from those deaths?
In some instances death is certain, no matter the prowess of the pilot.
Could the death be avoided by not being at that instance? If so, would that make you better as a fighter?
I see death as a learning experience.
Sometimes you go in, knowing that you will die, and do not. And learn nothing.
Sometimes you go in, and die, and learn a lot.

we need more info.
what ships do you usually fly? what role do you take in pvp? how do you usually lose?
that would help.
for example if you fly frigates and your role is a tackler, then expect to die often and dont worry about it.
if you fly expensive battleships and you are damage dealer then time to be concerned.
for pvp the rule is- 1.dont fly what you cant afford to lose. 2. have fun.
as long as the above is ok dont worry about losses.
i started of pvp flying frigates (trisans mostly) and flying about 0.0 trying to shoot anyone. i got killed all the time but it was fubn and i learnt a lot. i then moved up to cruisers then hacs.
now i lose very few ships as im very careful. each time you die , as long as you learn a lesson and understand why, you gain knowledge and shouldnt die the same way again.
some of the best pvpers in game are people who have lost a lot of ships then learnt.
you ARE doing the right thing even if you are getting killed as you are gaining experience. as long as you are having fun and can afford to lose then all well and good.
Before complaining about any ship try flying Minmatar |

Edited by: Ginger Magician on 16/12/2006 11:10:57 The odd member of my corp loses more than they kill just because of their playstyle or wallet or inexperience in most cases. Fly with the best and you will learn quickly.Fly with mediocre players and you will never get any better. There is nothing wrong with sacrificing a ship now and then to get a reward for the whole corp and some players do this better than others.

Edited by: Ishquar Teh''Sainte on 16/12/2006 12:20:54 i can only reiterate what all the posters before said (hell - even GMs post made sense )
the most important question is - did you have fun?
the next one is - did you learn something from the deaths - did you recognize the mistakes? and how many of the deaths were caused by bad luck?
don't worry sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
and tbh - kill/loss statistics mean nothing. if you're an *******, your corp has other things to worry about than your kill/loss statistic. if you're not an *******, why should they bother to value you on your kill/loss statistic? ___________________

Take it easy T'Renn
It is the spirit that counts, hombre.
Maybe you have an even kill record because you choose even fights, not because you are bad at PvP?
All that counts is that you have fun with your playstyle.

T'renn You think too much
Just have fun m8. The ones whith massive kiil/death ratios probs just gank peeps that cant fight back or are 2 days into the game.
Sounds to me like your corp m8's want you to stay so go eat somemore chocolate and lose a few more ships that you can afford to lose, and have a blast.
He he, I'm crap at it too.

Look on the bright side, you must be posting your losses.
One of the tedious corp responsibilities that goes with my directorship is inspecting our corp killboard and gleaning intel from kills and losses. During wars I love to see the same handful of names cropping up in embarrassing solo ganks, as it tells me which of our opponents have initiative (and hence could be FCs, which helps with setting jamming priorities). In one war that was a real battle winner - a few cheap ganks gave us the information we needed to scatter fleets.
Trust me, if you are only getting yourself killed and not your corpmates, your honesty is appreciated, as any person constructively reading the killboard will be looking to see who killed you, and not judging your loss.
Just make sure you don't drag anyone else into ganks, and keep your record up to date.
But if you are finding that you simply lack the situational awareness or reflexes to PVP, perhaps you would do better aiding your friends in a support function. EW or industry, perhaps.

If you stop I'm going to pirate your mining ops.
Don't even think of it Renn. Don't measure yourself by the killboard. If you did, you'd see that I (the worlds worst pirate) am the second best pirate in the corp and on the board. We all know that to be untrue. Continue your quest, and find your niche, or i'll find you as my new target!

OP just "pulled a Cyvok".
Seriously though, you shouldn't give up this easily. Look at your mistakes and learn from them, that is the best way to avoid future losses/errors. Loosing ships is part of the learning curve for PVP.

As long as you have fun the rest does *not* count imho.
This has been my take since day one and I have never regret it.
Log in, play the game, have fun killing or have fun being killed. When you die hop in a new ship and go out again.

Edited by: Audemed on 17/12/2006 11:09:31 You can look at me on my corp's killboards, I die a lot too. But when you look at why, it's because I take risks, and then learn from my mistakes, so i can take bigger risks. I started out PvP'ing in a largeish alliance, and so solo work didn't come as quickly to me as it could. However, once I did break free, the things you need to think about came more naturally. One of the biggest things is to just think about what you're doing. A badger II sitting on a gate is not a golden opportunity (EXTREME circumstances aside ), it's a trap. Choose your engagements, and always try to have a way out should it go bad.
And remember, if all else fails...take one of them with you
