I've been playing for a couple days, and have grown fond of running missions in my Tristan. I am running L1 missions at the moment, and was wondering if I could use the same ship for L2.
Tristan High -Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I x2 [antimatter] -OE-5200 Rocket Launcher x2 Mid -Cap Recharger I -Monopropellent I Hydrozine Booster -Open Slot >_< Low -Small Automated I Carapace Restoration -Damage Control I -Energized Basic Adaptive Nano Plating If I know what I'll be facing, I'll look it up and adapt my rocket ammo and Energized Nano Plating to the encounter.
Can this ship run L2 Missions? I have mid-slot open because I don't have enough power to run anything else. I do have 5 spare CPU; is there anything I can put in it? How do I unlock L2 Missions? Do I just keep doing L1s until someone opens up?

First, you unlock L2 missions by building up faction enough so that a Level 2 agent will talk to you. Show info on the agent you're doing missions for now, and click on their corporation's logo, then look at the list of agents it has. Locate a level 2 agent, and if it's not available to you, it should say in his description what faction you need before he'll talk to you.
In addition, the Social skills, if you train them, offer huge faction boosts with various agents. Read up the descriptions of those skills; usually training one of them to just 2 or 3 will be enough to open up L2 agents for you.
As for the ship, L2 missions have similar story backgrounds as L1 missions, except they're designed for cruiser-level ships. Some are easy and can be done in a frigate, but some aren't. Imagine a Worlds Collide where multiple cruiser-sized ships shoot missiles and medium weapons at you... your frigate's armor will probably not be able to withstand the damage.
FYI, L3 missions are "balanced" for battleship or T2 cruiser ships, and L4 missions are supposed to be done in groups of battleships. Just so you get an idea.

you can solo most lvl4s in a BS but not all. A couple are really evil. Unless you know EXACTLY what you are facing and then you can tailor your setup to counter. second room worlds collide lvl4 will kill you unless you have a smart bomb to kill the 4 (angels) web scrammers.

Edited by: system crashes on 17/12/2006 22:12:46 If you're lazy, like me, and don't like warping out of missions, then no. You can't do many of them in a T1 frigate with low piloting/fitting skills.
Again, unless you're going to warp out a fair bit.
A cruiser should be easy enough to do all the L2 missions without having to warp out...

To expand a bit on what others have said:
If you are going to run missions train the skills social, contacts (or is it connections? one or the other) and negotiation to level 3 asap. It makes a huge differnece in how fast you get faction. Its an unbelivable hellgrind without it, and with them you will more or less go to level 2 instantly. Negotiations gets you better pay.
When Eve first launched several years ago there were few classes of ships. Basically, there were just frigs, crusiers, and battleships for combat ships to start with. Level one missions were for frigs, level 2 for cruisers, level 3 for Battleships. Many new ships and modules have come into the game since then, plus level 4 missions have been added, and the lines have blured. Its possible to do level 3s in a battlecruiser with the right setup. There are some hardcore frig pilots (they usually seem to fly rifters for some reason)who say they do level 2's in frigs, but most players choose to upgrade to a crusier for them. The ones that dont are plushing the envelope in terms of skills/gear/experience, and like to play on the edge.
Now, if you really want to stay with the smaller ships, there is always the option of tech 2 frigs. Train Mechanic and Engennering up to 5, plus racial frig to 5, and you can get into assault frigs. The two for the galentee are both excellent, and will crush level 2s to dust, and even handle level 3 missions with some skill, finess, and patience. They are more expensive than a crusier, but you can get into an Enyo for around 15 mil ship cost last time I looked, with the Ishkur coming in around 25m. Both kick ass, the enyo is a pure gunship and the Ishkur is a baby drone carrier. It might take you a while to save up for them, but if you love small fast ships they are the way to go.

Thank you for all the advice. I have Social 3, Negotiations 2, and Connections 1 already trained. I guess I'll be latter two in the next couple days. I'd like to stick with Frigates, so I'll probably train for T2 Frigates over cruisers.
A couple more questions... I'm currently at .67 standing. How long do you think it will take me to reach 1.2? Does anyone have any suggestions regarding my setup? Do I have too much damage mitigation? Are some parts unneccesary?

Two levels of connections and you will be there. Each adds .5 to friendly faction/corps.

I've been running level 2's easily now in my Tristan but you really need to get some skills up to make it easy. I've got Electronic and Engineering to V to max out my cpu and power grid so I can fit the modules I want...I've also got my cap recharge rate maxed out (will I can't afford a cap recharger II at 20+ mil) and I armor tank by choosing the appropriate hardener for the mission. My drone skills are up too so I get some pretty good damage from my drone.
This works for me, but you need to get the better modules and skills to make it work cpu and power wise...
2X light missles launcher (use flameburst missles) 1X 75 mm Scout hybrid 1X NOS
1X afterburner 1X webifier 1X Cap recharger
1X Power diagnostic 1X Armor repairer II 1X appropriate hardener
hobgoblin or hornet drone

What is a NOS? I couldn't find it on the acronyms page.

NOS(feratu) - energy vampire -- takes the target's capacitor energy and transfers it to yours.

The skill actually adds 4% per level of the difference between your current standing and 10.
Zin's right in this instance though - 2 levels of Connections should boost your standing from 0.67 to 1.42, which is enough to use any level 1 -12 quality agent.
Bear in mind that T2 frigates will take a while to train for and it will be much quicker, easier and cheaper to get into a cruiser first to do level 2s.
