Edited by: roffelcaeks on 17/12/2006 21:15:23 Sorreh if this has already been asked, I did a search but couldnt find anything exact.
Q: Im looking to find and specialize in a role that will be useful in both skirmish and fleet size engagements. Can anyone suggest a reasonably low SP required role that a new player like myself (1.2m sp) could assume and actively pvp in asap. I'd also apprechiate it if detailed info was given on that role and steps to take (ship wise).
Btw im looking to go Merc, thanks in advance. --- A pessimist is merely a well informed optimist. |

Usually its a good idea to start as a tackler (that is, someone who uses a fast ship to warp scramble and web another player to keep them from running away). You dont need many skills for that, and its a very useful role in a gang.
King of the Pink Sig - Karl Chroimcer Its red and very manly! - Devil Hanzo First sigjack by me ever. - Garthagk Violet would be even manlier - Conuion Meow

Or, one of the non-pvp roles while you train up other stuff might be the lowly hauler. Lots of gate camps can only really kill Indys before they get into warp. Sometimes those indys drop a TON of loot. A good hauler (and now) salvager might be handy, but it's not very fun, cause you don't help kill anything. Well, not totally true, My Bestower has quite a few mid slots on it, but you'd only be able to use it for PvP/gate camps in 0.0 cause the gate guns would eat you alive. good game |

or train up for bcs ;p
u can hop into bcs fairly fast, maybe in a month or 2 and they hit damn hard, drakes good since its got a heavy tank and u dont need much sp to fly it. ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)
the usual "I don't represent my corp or alliance" and stuffs like that

anti-frigate work too a low SP character in a Caracal for example with Assault Launchers could probally help swat frigates from around the BS.

I reccomend disruption or scouting. THis can eb tackling or tracking disruptors, ECM, damps, etc.
Otherwise I'd say a Destroyer, extremely cheap and invaluable vs enemy frigates. ***

Um... Devil... you forgot to mention the low probability of tacklers staying alive in any kind of an even fight. I'm a noob and my role was exactly as you described- tune up an Atron for max speed and scramble target(s) as directed by the gang leader. I have yet to live through an entire fight, although I almost lived through the last battle we had in Rancer... Man! Consensual- PvP is fun!!!
Bottom line is tacklers are primary targets for the support units of the opposing side. We might have fast ships, but the frigates and drones they sick on us make tackling way too interesting; it certainly isn't for the faint of heart.

Good information here. I'm in the same boat as the OP, but rather than getting into PvP ASAP I'm going in strong and ready. It's going to take a couple more months to specialize in the right departments, but tackling will likely be in my near future.

Someone mentioned Destroyers as usefull Anti-Frig boats.
In Rev, didnt the Destroyer get a larger hp or shield boost % than other vessel sizes? If so, then does anyone see more of these moving around than before?
It was a rarity to see one of these things, to me anyway. Outside of big gang/fleet ops. |

Alternatively, you could just join a corp that are newer than even you, then choose what job you want while they get stuck with the sucky jobs like tackling.
It's what I did when I choose my current corp, and here I still am, 1 year and 10 months later. :o ___
