I want a toggle switch in the graphics setting so I can turn off the background nebulae. Space is vast, empty, and very black. It's speckled with billions of stars, galaxies, and star clusters; not plastered with overly dramatic nebulae. I want my gaming experience to be as realistic (visually) as possible. Kali's new starfield effect is great. Add luminosity based on star type and distance, and you have a great way to immerse players. -Li

Space looks differently depending on where you are. While I agree that not every system needs to be stuffed deep within a gas cloud somewhere, some of them should be. In fact, many of them should be. The view from within a spiral arm, or near the galactic centre (i.e. Empire) should be more colourful. Reds near the centre, with a higher star density; blacks and blues out in 0.0, with fewer stars off the galactic plane.

I also want to be able to toggle the skyboxes on and off because as they are now it's too much. Besides, people might take a look at some nasa shots and say something like - But hey, look, it's colorful. - That's just because the image has been exposed to the light for a long duration which means it absorbed more light than what your eyes would.
I think there should be some skybox graphics but it should be correct depending on where you are in the eve galaxy and not just have a random colored skybox with twirling colors...

Actual space would look incredibly boring. Starfields are relatively faint, and with the way the human eye works, if you're looking at a closer object then you won't see the starfield. The same is true of nebula - essentially anywhere in EVE where you've got a light turned on you'd pretty much blank out all background detail.
Space is pretty cool, but also boring to look at when it's only on our computer screens.
Though I do agree, it would be nice if we had some consistency of the backgrounds in EVE since we're not moving all that far jump to jump. In particular, it would be great if that starfield could be linked to the actual starfield that we see in the map.

Well, if you want a realistic space, CCP should make realistic asteroid belts (I belive they are thinking about that). About the button idea: I agree. Maybe call it something like "realistic/movie style" or something in that way... So /signed.

i wish space was much darker, would make seeing the overview and modules easier as well as how cool would it be to see the flash of the torpedo explosions on a close orbit enemy BS light up the sides of your ship.

Hm, I can agree with some of the arguments. But..
If space in EVE was darker and maybe even black most of the time, couldn't it be that.. well some people start complaining and suggesting, you know, some variety? Like cool colourful nebulae or something fancy like that. It could be explained with the fact that EVE is far far away from Earth and .. oh wait ;-)
Now seriously, yes there could be a bit fewer of them imho. Perhaps every other system (avg) instead of every system. More consistency would also be great. For example every Constellation could have it's distinct look, with some systems almost completely black while in others the nebula or other spatial anomaly covers an increasingly larger part of the screen.
Basically I'd take fancy over realistic anytime. It's a game after all.

Personally, I'm all for variety. I just with it was a little more consistent. Red and orange systems near the centre of the galaxy, and lumped together. Blue and black regions in the spiral arms. Maybe some pink nebulous areas. Dark systems in the middle of dense, unlit nebulae, and clear systems with beautiful star fields. In the star fields, you could even maybe see distant regions of nebulae. They did this in Freelancer to great effect. As you moved towards nebulous regions, the nebula took up more and more of your field of view until you were within it.

So we give people the option to switch between them.
As for what space actually looks like, due to how bright the local star is compared to other ones, you are talking about a completly black background unless your far enough away from the star.
This could make for an interesting effect that causes the star to stay the same brightness (until you get far enough out), but background stars, planets, moons and stations would vary in brightness as you move around the system. This can easily be explained by the lens on the camera drone becoming less transparent the closer you get to the star, much like Photocromic lenses in sunglasses work today. -----------------

Edited by: Liandri on 19/12/2006 07:19:44 Remember that space looks different when you're actually up there in orbit as opposed to here on Earth. The starfield can look dense and cloud-like (well, relative to space norms). I also agree that this is a game and it should have some 'Hollywoon' style special effects. Just tone it down a bit. I say make the EVE galaxy starfield a bit more brilliant and make it look a little more like the milky way does when viewed on a very clear night on Earth would be good. Perhaps by adding in artificial 'filling' between the stars, giving it that denser feel. And there's nothing wrong with seeing big star clusters or other galaxies neighboring EVE - far enough such that they are not reachable, but close enough that we can see what they are.

How can you say that the space where the eve galaxy is are dark like ours, was you there ? It also is just n view from our eye that let us see thinks on wrong colors our brain tells us ^^ well but i like the idea photorealistic background wouldt be awsome. And by this way i also wouldt like options to change this view to infared, gamma and so on, just for the fun ^^
