After some RL issues (I got a new job), FFET has released version 29 of it's skill file for EVE Character Manager in line with the release of Revelations.

no matter what i try it keeps saying 'invalid login' when i try to retrieve data

Hi Gilgamoth,
Will you fix login problems anywhere in the future please ? (I don't want to use EMS)
ECM is better than EVEMon IMHO but everybody is using EVEMon now beacause of the login issuses of ECM.

just download the xml from the character sheet web page and save it in the xml folder called <character_id>.xml
no need to login then.
I do that with 2 accounts

This is what you do:
Download and Configure EMS (EVE Management Suite). It has been "fixed" to work with the XML data on the website. Once its downloaded and configured, make sure it is updated, and shows all basic stats for yoru characters.
Make sure EMS is located in your ECM folder!
Then, and only then, start ECM (EVE Character Manager), the data obtained via EMS from the EVE XML site will be automatically parsed into ECM.
Problem Solved.
