Hi all, I'm curious about how exactly defender missiles operate. Do they fly in a straight line from your ship to your target? Or do they seek out nearby missiles in space and blow them up? Can I fire towards a ship that is firing upon my friend and blow up the enemy missles? Do defender missiles actually do any damage against targets other than missiles?
And finally, Can someone tell me when a good situation to use them would be, and what the limitations are in each case?
Thanks in advance, Metalone

defenders auto target incoming missiles to your ship. thats it.
they suck and dont really work well. this is rather unfortunate as its the ONLY anti-missle element in the game.

So do I need to have the ship that is firing missiles at me targetted, or can I just start spamming them out like FoF missiles?

Edited by: OBI WAN on 18/12/2006 01:48:25 They're pretty useless for the most part, it takes 3 defenders to kill a single torpedo, and if you use them against cruise missiles the cruise missiles move too fast for the defenders to catch and destroy them.
Edit: You can just start spamming them, no need for a target.

Well alright. The hypothetical situation that I had in mind was that I be in a megathron, and the enemy be in a raven. I've got six blasters and a MWD on board, as well as two rocket launchers with defenders. So as I'm closing the gap between myself and the raven, assuming that there is a distance between us that needs to be closed, couldn't the defenders be used to keep myself reasonably clean before entering close-quarter combat?

In a word, no.
If the Raven is using Cruise, then you won't be able to kill his missiles because the defenders don't... "track" well enough to catch the cruise missiles and take them out before they get to you. Cruise go at like, 4km/s and you'll be about 20-30km away, so they will hit you very soon after launch.
If the Raven is using Torpedoes, you'll be lucky to kill one of the incoming torpedoes before they hit you, since it takes 3 defenders to kill a torpedo and without RoF bonus you'll be looking at 3+ seconds between every salvo.
Best suggestion is to fit another blaster (giving you 7) and a Nosferatu of some kind.

omg had an idea... (sorry to hijack thread): target painters make missiles go to another target.. 2nd anti missile EW that usefull..
Anyway spamming defenders with left over highslots and missile hardpoints in fleet could help if the enemy has many ravens.

Sadly defenders only target missiles that are aimed at you, and you won't be able to take out missiles that are fired at someone in your gang.
However, NPCs are the exception to this rule and will help each other out by firing lots of defenders and destroying your entire missile salvo.

Defenders are useless. They didn't get a speed buff when missiles got one a while ago. They also only target missiles currently in the air, so you need to micromanage them.
Don't bother with them. Use Nos.
