Edited by: Ariel Stardust on 18/12/2006 22:52:56 Hi,
I've recently squeezed into a Raven I'd like to take into deep 0.0 for ratting and mining defense. I'm also interested in PVP, but I realize the setups probably won't be similar.
I really know nothing about Cruise Missiles or Torpedos, but I can almost use the Standard Tech 1 torps.
Anyone have any suggestions, or could point me to anywhere this might have been discussed before? Not having much luck finding extensive Raven info.
Also... why does it seem like everyone's Armor tanking the Raven instead of Shield?
Thanks!

Don't use the Raven until you have the skills for it. Seriously you need to have cruise or torps...really. Also make sure that your support skills are up to par as well. Engineering, tactical shield manip, electronics, mechanics, etc. Otherwise you may as well just use a ferox because you'll spend that much in insurance money each time your Raven gets blowed up.

Edited by: Ariel Stardust on 18/12/2006 23:20:13 I have most of the tertiary shield skills, etc.
To start with, why are people Armor Tanking it though? Which missile types should I focus on first for 0.0 BS'?
I have a Drake now, but will that really be able to hold up aginast 4 0.0 BS' in one spawn? Drake just takes a LONG time to kill a double BS spawn as is...

0.0 ratting you use Torps that hit the NPC's weak spot. Linky
Get torps though, seriously.
p.s You're going to lose your raven, so insure it.

I'll try to wait on getting it... but will a Drake be able to hold up against 4 BS rats? 4 of them, and actually be able to kill `em?
What's the deal with people armor tanking the Raven?
What are some good ratting setup suggestions for when I do get the thing, too? I really have no idea where to start, aside from torps.

You don't need insurance. Just do what everyone else does, ctrl q if a hostile jumps into the system.

Armor tank on raven to free up lowslots for EW. Quad BS rats rarley if ever to my knowledge spawn in belts. Though I've always lived in the ass-end of 0.0, so I deal with 3x 1m spawns. Drake can probably tank it, well, mine can . As far as killing it, it'll take a >long< time.

Raven Set-Ups
1) Never fit more than 3x BCU's. 2) Always have atleast 2x Hardeners on if you're shield tanking 3) Use T1 torp launchers. 4) Best of luck with fitting.

I don't have much experience with armor tanking, but doesn't in involve armor reppers which are low slot mods?
What're the pros/cons of Armor vs Shield tanking in a Raven?

Armor Tank Ravens are pure pvp (But they are very interesting in that field)
Unless you fight angels, just stack 2x2 hardeners of the main npc damage types and maybe install a coffee mod to prevent falling asleep.
Angels do all damage types, that is more tricky.

Angels tank is usually a passive thermal resist, active thermal/kin and an invul field II. Worked for me, anyway.

Meds: ----- 1x Phased Weapon Target Painter 2x Invuln Field II 1x XL Shield Booster Named 1x Shield Boost Amplifier LAST MID SLOT: 3rd Invuln II or Large Extender II (or something else?)
Lows: ----- 3x BCU II 2x PDU II
Thanks for the tips!

This is a very good fit. If you're going to go the route of Invul II's, it's worth using 3 of them. Or a second Amp. If you're in 0.0 though, it's always nice to have a Heavy Booster on hand just incase something mean warps your way. Of course the charges will make looting near impossible.
Honestly though, I never bother looting while ratting. Warp in at 80km, pop the BS's, next belt. Rinse repeat. If you want to loot, have a friend come up behind you and loot for you.
In 0.0, operating without friends is a pain. No lie.

Edited by: DiuxDium on 19/12/2006 03:42:58 You'll have alot of people arguing against LSE's on a BS. It's just not 'enough' of a boost. Mostly due to the crap regen of the Raven to begin with. Fitting an LSE with a SB is silly to begin with in my opinion. You should always "max" out which ever direction your tank is going in, rather than splitting it up. (i.e. using a passive mod 'lse' with the active mod 'sb'.) If you want a stronger tank, the additional Amp will provide a good deal of benefit.
The above only applies to BS+. In the case of a Cerberus i'd use extenders + sb. That's a hole diffrent matter though.

my ratting setup: 6 cruise launchers 2 large nos x-large shield booster, tech II shield boost amp, 3 invuln fields, large electrochemical injector. 2 BCU II's 1 named cpu upgrade, 2 PDU II's just fits
the injector and noss are there for when you get ganked by the random pirate. it will hold against a hac long enough to call for help. I have even managed to drive off a vaga and crow with it while rats were dumping on me. carry at least 8 spare 800 chrages though. have somebody else loot, since the raven is a tub anyway.

Angels do all damage types, that is more tricky.
Armortank raven works fine against bloods and sansha should be the same for obvious reasons. Could be able to make it work vs a few other damage types too but you'll have to try those out for yourself.
1 true sansha/dark blood thermic hardener, 1 damage control and a L armor rep is enough of a tank with good skills to tank triple pope spawns. Just put mids full of cap regen stuff and go with cruise launchers. The tank can run indefinetly, so just turn it on and start ratting.
Torps have the nasty habit of not hitting the best frigate spawns, and those tend to be what will scramble you in the field, so IMO you should go with cruise, just to get that extra help vs. them. Obviously your drones will do abit of damage too but the more the faster things go. And yes, tech2 launchers if possible, you want the fastest launchers out there to kill as fast as possible.
Regarding looting : If you don't loot you basically give up half the rewards or more, loot can be either reprocessed to minerals to build more ammo, or sold in empire, or 0 sec, or just be used by corpmates and alliancemates in need. ________________________________

Here's what I use for 0.0 ratting. Most of the time I don't have to hit the shield booster, so this fit should work ok for you regardless of skills.
6 "arbalest" Siege Launchers (Load the proper torps for your rats) 2 Tractor Beams
1 XL Shield Booster 2 1 Shield Boost Amplifier 2 2 Rat-Specific Hardeners 1 Named 100mn Afterburner (don't use tech 2, not worth it) 1 Good Target Painter
1 Balistic Control System 2 3 Power Diagnostic System 2 1 Local Hull Nanofiber
Ship goes 300m/s with the AB on and loots about as fast as it can kill. If your alliance does not patrol their space as well as mine, replace the siege launchers with cruise and take off the painter for an EM Hardener just in case. You can also remove a PDS for a Ballistic if you use cruise launchers.
Required Skills to Fit:
Weapon Upgrades 5 Electronics 5 Energy Systems Operation 4 Shield Operation 5
I'd also suggest tech 2 hardeners. If you don't have these 5 skills yet you probably should not be in a raven in 0.0.
P.S. Caldari Battleship to 4. Any real raven pilot sucks it up and trains it to 5.

BTW: I wouldn't suggest PVP in a Raven. The Raven does one thing very well, which is shield tank. It's not an especially lethal damage dealer and unbelievably slow. Assuming you are new and specializing in missiles, I would strongly suggest the scorpion for PvP. It has a few things going for it that the Raven does not.
1) It is almost completely invulnerable to any other single ship.
Most of the ships that could out-jam you are smaller and not much threat on their own (Recon ships, other Caldari ECM ships). Exceptions to this rule are dampener Dominixes which will tear you a new one and another scorpion. Something like a nanophoon is no threat at all.
2) It's pretty damn cheap
72mil is the insurance on a Scorpion, and you don't really need to shell out for anything crazy and named to get a workable PvP fitting.
For this reason, the scorpion is a very good beginner PvP BS. It's really nice in gangs, although you will be called primary more often than not. While it's not as deadly as some of the other battleships you could be flying, it's a good safe bet for the beginning BS PvPer, and especially one who flies Caldari.
Here's my fit...
4 "Arbalest" Cruise Launchers 2 e500 Nosferatu
5 "Hypnos" ECM Multi Jammers 1 F-90 Sensor Booster 1 Named Webber 1 Named 20k Scrambler
2 1600 Plates 1 ECM Booster 1 Ballistic Control
Remove the Hypnos, Arbalest, and E500's for basic named or tech 1's to start out. Flying around with no shield booster will feel funny for a while, but you can pretty well jam anything that scares you and NOS their tacklers. Just today I was jumped at a gate by a nanophoon and 2 tacklers (interdictor and Taranis). NOS the frigates and jam the phoon. The frigs warp out and the phon orbits uselessly. Missed a jam and the drones came after me, at which point a retreat seemed the best bet. Situations like this will obliterate almost any other BS flown by a new pilot, but in a scorpion your escapes are easy and you live to fight another day. You'll get your kills and confidence in time, but honestly Caldari BS are not where it is at in PvP at the present time.

My setup for 0.0 ratting was functional even with my limited skills, there were some spawns that gave me trouble but I was able to make decent ISK:
6x named siege, large named nos, drone link augmentor named xl shield booster, 2x named hardeners, 2x named painters, sensor booster 3x pds ii, 2x bcs ii One flight of mediums and one flight of lights in the drone bay
It was a tight fit, I don't think I could have done it without the named mods.
Torps for BSs, Torps+painters for cruisers, drones for frigates.
Had a base nearby so that I could switch out to use a dedicated looter when the cans started to build up.
I made the money to buy a Raven by ratting with a Ferox. The standard passive-tanked missile-spewing Ferox could handle the low-end battleship spawns even with my mediocre skills, though it was a slow process. The Drake will probably be a much better ratter than the Ferox, but I haven't had the chance to try that yet.
One important lesson I learned early on: More than the ships I used earlier in my career, the Raven maneuvers like a sedated sloth. If you want the option of getting out in a hurry, it's a very good idea to be aligned to warp out quickly.

Old and busted: XL Shield Booser
Rev new goodness: 6x Torps IIs (You need AWU III to fit) 1x Heavy Dimishing Nos(defense against gankers) 1x Whatever
3x Large Shield Extender IIs 2x Hardener IIs(rat primary damage) 1x Hardener II(rat secondary damage)
3x BCS II 2x PDS II
Drones: 5x Med drones(match rats weakness) 5x Light ECM(Defense against gankers)
With revelations increased hp. You'll have 20k shield HP you can easily take on triple 1.5m+ bs spawns(Even bloods and sanshas) just by passive tanking. It makes ratting such easy mode, so you can fly around and salvage on your alt without having to worry about baby sitting the shield booster.

replace with named, tech II, whatever you can afford.
6 x siege launchers 2 x heavy nos
1 x XL shield booster (best named) 1 x shield boost amp 3 x npc specific shield hardners 1 x cap booster.
4 x PDS 1 x BCU
So lots of PDS as you might have fitting problems and the cap booster as you'll gona have cap problems. Nos helps a bit.

Passive tank is fine and dandy, but I prefer active boosting. Active boosting requires 4 tank slots, not 6... giving you room for a painter and afterburner. Both setups are ezmode as player ships got a boost in cap and shield and the rats are the same old crappy ones we saw when a C5-L XL shield booster cost 20 Million...
