I'm just starting to get into pvp now that I have my industry stuff taken care of. Since I fly caldari I have mostly missile skills atm. Are HAMS any good for pvp? They seem to do about 60% of the dmg of a heavy launcher and fire a little less than twice as fast. But only 1/3 of the range. This doesn't seem all that impressive to me.

In my mind, they're designed for ships tha get up close anyway, so the range limitation ins't really that much of a limitation. If you want standoff at 100KM spaming away, heavy missiles would be the way to go.
That said, look at javelin HAMs (BPOs should be getting seeded soon) ---------- It's great being minmatar, ain't it |

HAMs are like the Caldari response to Blasters. About the same range too.
Problem is, most Caldari pilots are so used to long range battles, that many aren't as sure what to do when scraping paint.
HAMs do excellent damage within range. Too much if you ask me. I say this only because Blasters are supposed to hit harder than anything else within range, and it should be an obvious difference or perceivable one at the least.
That said, a Drake with HAMs loaded is a most excellent close battle platform. He can be point and dish considerable damage to any ship within 10-15KM of him.
Here are what I suspect will be drawbacks for HAMs.
1) Caldari isn't used to close range battle, not like Gallente pilots are. 2) Caldari ships aren't designed for close range battle. 2-a) Low Cap making them more cap dependent than Gallente gunboats. 2-b) Few conventional setups include MWD, and base ship speeds are low. 2-c) Typically larger sig radius of ships, means easier to hit target for everyone involved. 3) Many Caldari pilots might be disgusted at the range of HAMs.

however the drake's tank is less cap dependant then say a raven.

Range of HAMs take getting used to for Caldari pilots, but their sheer dps is worth the trouble... A passively tanked drake with 7 HAMs + 3 BCUII could dish out over 300-400+ dps depending on skill, that plus the fact that those missiles never miss unlike blasters, so you can orbit at w/e velocity you like.
Having said that, passively tanked gank-drake dosn't have the same tank as a dedicated tank-drake, and you need to take extra damage to get close to target, so its not an IWinButton by any means.

HAMs are probably best used on ships with speed as a secondary weapon...such as the Vagabond/Hurricane.

What he said. I use them on a stabber, gives people a nice surprise. -=====-

I've been thinking about using a Cerberus with HAMs. 30km range with top missile skills. Fit an armor tank (supplemented with armor tank rigs) and then fit all the pvp topping in the mid slots. Any thoughts?

You should have about 200 grid remaining to fit armor tanking stuff (no I haven't runned the numbers). A plate and an explosive hardener will be needed 100%, leaving you with 2 lowslots, so it's going to be a very tight fitting, with 1 or none BCU. _______

Wrong.
They have +25% DPS and about 1/6 of the range of regular heavies. Also, a slightly bigger sig (slightly less damage on small targets)... made worse by the fact GMPrecision skill does not affect them. Take a bit more grid but less CPU to fit compared to heavies.
So, take your pick... big damage vs big targets only and less range, or extra range and decent damage against all target sizes.
P.S. Javelin HAMs still have less range as regular heavies, and only marginally better DPS against big targets, much worse against small ones. For those saying Javelin HAMs are overpowered... look again. _ My skills | Mod/Rig stacknerfing explained |
