I'm looking for a ship, anywhere from a destroyer up to cruiser (preferebly, but a BC would work to I guess) that can mine more than a retreiver. The requirements are that the ship must be able to fit Miner II's (obviouosly). It must also be able to fit 1 tractor beam. Thirdly it must have a drone bay capable of fitting 5 mining drones along with 5 light drones.
Is there a ship that can meet these requirments and still mine more than a retreiver?
(Never used a retreiver before, so thats why I'm asking you guys.)
Thanks in advance

Osprey.
Not sure about the drone bay but it gets a mining bonus.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it.

Bullcrap. There is a perfect ship...the hulk, but the OP doesn't wanna fly a barge.
OP, the mining cruisers are the easist ones to fly, but the only ships that will mine as much as a medium barge are T2 Miner fitted battleships b/c they have the turrets available.

How about this...
Brutix
Highs 6 Miner II's 1 Tractor Beam
Lows 2 Miner Upgrades 2 or 3 Co-Processors
Along with 5 Mining Drones.
Could this possibly be better than a retriever?

Short answer = No
The Osprey can get close but it will require you to train for Cruiser 5 for the extra bonus.
You could train faster for a Dominix, Rohk or Armageddon. The Rohk and Geddon will mine faster than a Retriever. The Domi falls just a hair short (obviously dependent of skills of course), but it can tank 0.0 spawns as well.
The Retriever is still good because you can also mine ice, use T2 strips and crystals. It also has a larger cargo so you don't have to drag minerals every 30secs.
So, the only thing that meats your reqs are in the Battleship family.

Edited by: Sir Howard on 19/12/2006 15:52:35 Well I'm talking high sec mining. The only rats I would worry about would be frigates, thus the 5 light drones. Ice..like I said high sec..doesnt matter to me.
Problem is in high sec, roids die quick. So thats why I want a tractor beam fit on there, save me hauling tons of cans from having to move around alot.

Edited by: Sir Erighan on 19/12/2006 16:02:22 Just jet-can mine. You don't really need to worry about ore therft in empire (unless you're in Jita, which you shouldn't be). I've been jet-can mining for months and have never had the can swapped by a pirate (but i have a BS in the hanger just in case ) . Also, since you get 800K SP with the character creation, you can build a hauler alt that takes less than 24hrs to build.
I jet-can mine for hours, building up 5+ cans (naming and swapping every 45min so they don't pop), and then use my hauler alt to pick them up. Don't need tractor beems and don't need to move around.
Edit = And yes, the Brutix works well for mining. It will come close to a Retriever, but don't think it's faster.

That really is a lame reason to need a tractor beam because if you position yourself well you are going to fill several cans before you need to move - by which time someone will have promptly come along and stolen the cans before the belt runs out anyway!

teh brutix will out mine a retreiver with basic skills by i believe 100 or so units a cycle over all 7 of the miners and that is without drones. It does fairly well but for sanities sake just use a minnign barge...a retreiver is worth it jsut so your not constantly dragging ore into a can. Your minning your not supposed to be concentrating on eve while doign it ;). unless your in low sec but your not.

Ya I always jetison my ore into a can, then fill that can. Only problem is the multiple cans. Usually once I fill a can I go grab my Iteron 3 and haul the stuff.
My only worry now that I think about it would be that, like with the Brutix 6 miner II's and 5 mining drones might pull in more ore than the bay could hold and thus you would lose that extra ore. Granted if it does fit I ahve no problem constantly pulling ore into my can.

No its not lame...ever try mining Kernite? It comes in small quantitys and is spread through out a belt. I'm not gonna stop mining Kernite to hit-up a veldspar roid. Which is why I use a tractor beam.

You get around the cargo issue by staggering your lasers. Don't activate them all at the same time. Activate 2-3, wait 30 secs, then activate the others. It's the only way to do it and you will have to drag ore every 30-45 secs, which is a pain in the arse.

Edited by: Sir Howard on 19/12/2006 16:39:28 Well maybe I'll give that Brutix a go, I should be able to fit in a cargo expander to which might help with space.
Thanks for everyones input.
P.S Getting a retriever would take me 14 days...and I really dont want to move away from the skill plan I've got set right now. Down the road I'm sure it will be something I will work towards...but just not right now.

Edited by: Nicholai Thomasovich on 19/12/2006 16:50:09 Osprey, Dominix, and Armageddon really are the only ships that can come close to a Retriever in terms of efficiency. I don't know about any of the new Kali ships, I haven't looked into them yet (just started playing again).
Some good reading here.

The tractor beam thing is one of the silliest things I've seen when reading mining threads. I guess thats what keeps mineral prices high... people using crappy ships to mine, so I'm not gonna argue too much :)

Please, if your going to be rude explain yourself. Enlighten me as to how that is silly? And as I cannot use a mining barge what should I do in the mean time...twiddle my thumbs? Try being constructive. My post was an honest question, that was not stupid nor ignorant to begin with. People like you are the ones that riddle these boards with useless and non-helpful posts like this.

Let me once again try to explain this. Most of the times I go out to mine is when there is kernite in a belt. I usually mine and haul myself. I'm only there to mine kernite and it is always spread out. A can in space only lasts so long before it disapears. So if I'm mining in a ship other than a mining barge its gonna take me a while to mine a full can. More than likely by the time I get that can near full the time left on that can is probably gonna be pretty close to up. And I sure as hell dont want a can full of my ore disapearing on me. Problem is its near impossible to fill a can full of kernite while sitting in the same place in a belt. (using a ship other than a mining barge) Therefore with a tractor beam you can pull your can along with you to the next kernite roid. Once the time is up on the can, you can jetison a new one and pull all the ore into the new one.
Now if I'm mining along leaving all my cans lay as I go, not only am I gonna WASTE time getting to all them with my hauler. But some may run out of time before I get to them or I may have to stop mining early to go haul them.

I'm going to be nice to you, put on the thermic tank, cause you actually deserve the flames your getting. With that being said, running a tractor beam cause you're too lazy to just go get your hauler or whatever, or don't know how to use a mining probe right is just dumb. If you really have a problem with low amount roids, just move . That being said, I mine in a 7 Mining Laser Brutix, with 2 co-proc 2's, 1 mining upgrade 2 expanded cargo holds and some sort of shield tank in the mids. Stagger the lasers and your output is pretty good, although not as good as a battleship.
