Perhaps this is possible, and I just haven't figured it out yet, but why can we not warp to an arbitrary point in the solar system...especially now that we have this new, handy-dandy map?

I mean you open the map, right click anywhere (doesn't have to be at a starbase, gate, asteroid belt, etc), and select "Warp Here" or something. Perhaps it's the three-dimensional space that's preventing this from happening. I don't know.
However, you would not be able to warp any further than a set distance outside the orbit of the outermost planet (not like this). You'd still have to use probes, etc to warp outside the perimeter of the planets.

Well this could be interesting, although it would mean that people would be able to make excellent safe spots. I'm not sure yet if it would be abused or not

Fairly hard to do accurately in 3d with the current interface and IMO a generally bad change, gives too much control over warp-from points etc

I think the reasoning behind this had to do with making unbreakable safespots. Can you imagine being able to go anywhere in the system to like...X: -99999999999999999 Y: -999999999282882828282 Z: 8888888888888272727
Pretty sure it has to do with safespots =P ---

This is why I suggested that the movement be limited to within the perimeter of the planets, and (new restriction) a set distance above and below the ecliptic. But, as I also mentioned, this could come down to an interface problem. Would probably have to implement something similar to HW1 and 2 to do it correctly, but that could be a licensing issue...don't know.
