ok.. i've seen TONS of posts, saying how the passive drake setup was uber, etc..etc..
I've also been told that my Drake setup sucks. So, here, I offer you a comparison. (keep in mind that all skills have remained the same)
Mission: Silence the Informant, First room, L4
The "sucky setup":
7x Arbalest Heavy Launchers
1x Large Shield Booster II 1x LSE II 2x Invul Shield II's 1x EM Passive Shield Amp II 1x Explosive Passive Shield Amp II
1x Psuedo Damage Control 1x BCU II 2x Local-type PDS
=======================
The "uber wtfpwnbbq" Passive Drake setup
7x Arbalest Heavy Launchers
3x LSE II's 1x Invul Shield II 2x Shield Recharger II's
1x BCU II 2x Local-type SPR 1x Local-type PDS
========================
Number of times needing to warp out:
"Sucky" setup: 0 Passive setup: 6
Number of times needing to use shield booster:
"Sucky" setup: 1 Passive setup: n/a
Number of times out of capacitory:
"Sucky" setup: 0 Passive setup: 0
Armor left after room completion:
"Sucky" setup: 100% Passive setup: 71%
Yea...

The difference is simple: Resistances.
All the recharge rates or shield hit points in the game won't help you if your resistances are 20% lower than the alternate setup. The "passive" setup is gimped as it doesn't have resistances specifically targetted at the enemy you are fighting while the active setup does. If you look at ship stats while everything is turned on you are going to have at least 15% lower resistances in critical areas, that is why it took more damage.
That said, an active setup will provide greater protection in the short term (because its resistances are normally a little higher), but a lower endurance as you may have issues maintaining the cap indefinately and the passive setup only shines when you have taken enough shield damage to drop to ~30% shields. <-----------> MMORPG == Massively Moronic Online Raw Powergaming Grief fests....

i have no doubt that the Passive setup rocks for L3 missions.. however..
With fighting multiple battleships / frigs / cruisers / sentries, etc.. the passive setup.. is NOT good.. at all.
This is due to the amount of DPS that is thrown at you.. in L3's.. its not that much. But in L4's.. it can get pretty insane at times.
And yes, I agree.. the reason I did so well with the, and I quote from pretty much everyone that commented on my setup, "sucky" setup.. was the insane amount of resistances.
Needless to say, I am definately going back to my old setup.
PS: the warp-outs with the passive setup, I was at 5-10% shields, and going down FAST (hence all of the armor damage).

First thing I would do is drop the two rechargers and put in two passive resists for your NPC type. Then maybe drop the BCU for another SPR.
But in the end play the game and outfit the ship the way that works for you regardless of what is "better" or not. You will be happier that way.
Besides half the fun of playing is figuring what works or doesn't work for you, right? <-----------> MMORPG == Massively Moronic Online Raw Powergaming Grief fests....

That'd be because your "uber" setup is almost as bad as your other setup.
Shield rechargers.........yeah. Resists > rechargers. Hell, most things > rechargers.
You're taking an active setup with high resists and placing it against a passive setup that's crap.
If you're on IE, pretend this is transparent while you get a better browser. |

The "uber" setup is crap whoever came up with it should be shot (and proberbly already has by NPCs he fought using it)
to tank 3-4 lv4 bs: high:7 heavy med: 2 LSB, 3 t2 hardners (race specific for max effectiveness, or just use 3 t2 invul) low: 3 t2 BCU, 1 shield relay
tank and gank, what more can you ask for oh and the gank lets you kill the bs much faster, which reduce pressure on your tank.

You should at least have 2 T2 invulns. Maybe a invuln and 2 actieve race specifics or just 2 T2 race specifics.

Your resists are too low on your passive setup.

I understand that no one likes "move to this" or "get that" replies to thier thread, but this one begs for it.
Look at the amount of skills and money you have put into that drake setup. I can not think of one single reason why a mission runner would use this, given that he or she have the skills to use it. For the same price as your drake setup, a raven could be outfitted reasonably well (and with 1/2 the SP) to make the mission quite a bit easier.
I honestly struggle to understand why people with superior skills and wallets make threads of how they outfit thier ship to outperform another setup (regarding pve, pvp is different). If your average mission runner had the skills and money to use your setup, they would instead get the next biggest ship they could. This is why the passive setup is used so much; It's effective with very little skills or investment.

Edited by: Lubricity on 20/12/2006 04:43:38 Your "uberwtfpwn" passive setup sucks.
Here's what I would start with and modify based on needs [not even sure if this would all fit on the Drake's PG].
7x heavy launcher 3x LSEII, 2x hardner minimum, and a shield recharger if not a 3rd Hardner 2x bcu, 2x spr
EDIT: Oops, posted w/o reading the whole thread, looks like I got owned by forum noobness.

well.. considering with my "sucky" setup, i can pull an entire room in an L4, and go afk for 5-10 minutes at a time and not worry about getting blown up...
i think i'm going to stick with having a "sucky" setup

Your 'sucky' setup seems to be hardened for the mission pretty good while your semi-passive setup has gaping resistance holes in the damage types you're recieving. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

The problem is your "sucky" setup is not sucky at all, but is just a GOOD active shield tanking setup, while your "uber" setup is not uber at all but rather a VERY sucky passive tank setup... meh.
Try THIS one for passive tank instead: MIDS: 4x (named T1 or T2) mission-specific hardners (NOT invuls) + 2x LSE II LOWS: 1x BCU + 3x (PDU-II/SPR-I mix)
Depending on your cap skills, you might need as many as 2 PDUs for a "forever tank" (almost no cap skills), or you can just fit 3 SPRs (with maxed out cap skills). Alternatively, you can fit all SPRs and instead of a 4th hardner, use only 3 hardners and a shield recharger plus 2 LSEs. _ My skills | Mod/Rig stacknerfing explained |

Hi,
your passive setup is lacking resists. change the mids to:
3x LSE II 2x Invuln shield II 1X EM passive shield II
leave the high and lows as they are... i think you will like this passive setup alot more.
best of luck in which ever onwe you go with. comparing an active resis setup with a passive low resist set up is not really fair. try missions in this setup and then compare.
best of luck

Edited by: Aramendel on 20/12/2006 18:23:52 Nope, passive sucks for bigger ships because their recharge times are too high. Well, BS "bigger" ships. The best passive shieldtanks come with fitting oversized extenders on smaller ships. Like a drake or ferox with 3 LSE2 or a jaguar with 1 MSE2.
And as was said before, the OPs passive setup sucks because it is a sucky passive setup. A good passive setup is 3 * LSE2 + 3 mission specific harderners. 3 SPR in lows + 1 BCU.
I myself got a drake with 3 shield recharge rigs, 2 SPRs and 2 BCUs, 160k SP in missiles, lvl 3 in BC and it works just wonderfully in lvl 4s without any warpouts. Well, exept pirate slaughter room 3, but that room is far worse than silence the informant room 1 (which I did with a t1 invul, em and therm harderner....).
The only "big" missions I avoided so far were Worlds Collide and Enemies Abound.
Also, I could prolly use 3 BCUs and 1 SPR, but I want to play safe for now.

I easily tanked L4 Guristas Extravaganza in my (passive shield tank) Drake without ever dropping below 70% shields with only BC3.
Mids: 3xLSE2, Invuln (tech1 even because I didn't have a spare t2 one in my hangar at the time), and 2x Kinetic Shield Hardener T2 Lows: 3x SPR, 1x PDU2
I tanked and let someone else kill the stuff off, basically (was his mission, I was just helping by tanking the damage).
One thing to note was that while I could keep all three hardeners on for a *very* long time, it would eventually break me so I ran without the invuln off most of the time. I'd only turn it on at the start of each pull then turn it off when I got to 40% cap (usually only a few ships left at that point) so that it would recharge.

High: 7 Heavy launcher II's with appropriate T2 missile Meds: 2 Active hardners T2 3 T2 LSE Last slot up to you. Lows: 2 T2 BCS 2 shield relay 1 T2 PDU
warp-outs = thing of the past the key is resistances you have to have at least 80% for the two most dominate damage types you will be recieving. If you forget to adjust your hardners you will warp out. The Destruction of your ship is usually preceeded by the thought,"I think I will try somthing a little different this time...." |
