How often should I update my cloning data (or whatever you call it), and how do I do it? Also, I'm asking the same question for insurance (when should I update my insurance data, and how do I do it), along with when not to do it. Thanks.

If you look at your skill sheet you will notice you have XXX overall skill points. Your current clone should be able to cover ALL skill points (total of all your skills added together). No need to upgrade before then or buy a clone more than the one next able to cover all points. You do this at a station with a cloning facility in it (icon that has a red cross on it).
If you get podded without a clone able to cover all points you will lose some percentage (not sure what) of the difference. This is to be avoided at all costs as it will REALLY **** you off if it does happen.
Insurance has a (I forget) 3 month term? Once it expires you will receive an EVE-mail telling you that your insurance on Ship-X expired. Up to you to then re-insure it if you want.

Clone prices go up as you buy clones capable of protecting more skill points. The prices are clearly displayed when you go to upgrade the clone.
You always get a freebie newbie clone, but you never get freebie insurance except for the default 40% coverage on all ships that don't have any improved insurance policy taken out on them. Yeah, it's technically insurance, but it's not like you automatically get Platinum coverage on your first ship.

Your newbie ship is sort of insured. That is if it dies you will not get money for it but you will get a new newbie ship when you dock with your pod at the next station along with 1 unit of Tritanium (just to rub it in). This happens even if you have played for years (just had to fly a Velator back to my home base recently).
Note that ITEMS on your ship are NOT insured. Only the ship itself. In some cases the insurance payout on T2 ships is nowhere near the cost of the ship either. So, platinum insured or not lose your ship and you will lose money. Question is how much.

If you're podded without an up to date clone, you will lose 5% of the difference between your SP and the amount the clone covered.
This is taken off your skill with the most SP.
The most you will lose off the skill is 50% of the current SP.

Insurance has a 12 week term, which is not quite 3 months, as anybody who pays rent every 4 weeks rather than every calendar month will testify to.

Edited by: intakius on 20/12/2006 11:24:58 Keep 500k-1m higher(minimum) your clone than your actual skill points.Character sheet dont show gained skillpoints until skill training finished. You may find you have actually higher skillpoints than your clone
Example: you have 800k skill points and you started train a medium gun skill it will add around 630k skill but until it finished youll not see skill points you gained ,at some point you can pass 1m sp mark and still think 1m clone is ok for you. Be carefull while training lvl5s and abort training and restart to see how many sp you have Buy always new clone if you podded

My ship would be insured...but would all of the things like guns, EW devices, etc. be covered?

Those are never covered. Just your clone and your ship.
