Since I didn't see any other posts about this, I was just wondering about the thoughts of those who watched it.

Some nice moments, very good TP humor in places. Mostly gags ripped straight from the books.
Image-ry was good on the whole, but due to artwork being done by some guy who did one of the Discworld art books.
Casting was poor in places. Mr Teatime is played by the now typecast bloke from Hustle (BBC Series), and he puts on an awful awful awful faux-american accent. Ruins a lot of the thing for me.
Length was ropey. Pace was a bit squiffy. I guess from trying to get a book into 2h+2h, where 2.5-3h would have been better.
I dunno, I came away thinking that if they got a good director and a ****load of cash; then a lot more of the discworld novels would make very good films.

Hogfather is one of the few Discworld books I haven't read, so I quite enjoyed the film. The fact that Death's face didn't move didn't bother me much - the fact that it looked like a cheap Halloween mask just made him unthreatening (which of course, he is).
What I can't get my head around is why Teatime had a silly American accent when the actor is British.
Oh and to the guy who says the gags were ripped from the book: so what? It's BASED on the book. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Just annoyed it was on Sky, which I don't have, and BF's parents forgot to record it for me... :( .

I felt it lost alot in translation, the characters and stories in the books are so much richer and funnier - whole elements of the story were ignored and events weren't explained properly. Some of the casting/acting was abysmal (Nobby is a prime example - they completely ignored how he is supposed to look, I mean seriously he has to carry a card certifying he's a member of the human race) and the actual dialog was woeful. To fully appreciate every part of each story you do need to have read the preceeding books to get all the jokes and understand the characters, references etc - perhaps more of a narrator element would have helped as the Hogfather is a later book written with established characters and settings.
Overall I feel they let the Discworld series down but then it was a Sky One production attempting to televise what are very well written stories so shouldn't be surprised really. Maybe I'm biased as a diehard Practhett fanboi but I feel it could have been done so much better

did anyone else think Mr. Teatime sounded like Jonny Depp in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory? Especially the little giggle laught thing he did.

In the making of the Hogfather on the week before the actor playing Teatime cited Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka as his basis for playing Teatime - god only knows why.

I agree with the majority. Generally a compotent book-to-television adapation, but of course if you've read the book you'll be slightly let down (that's expected of course).
I felt Death and Ridcully pulled off their lines well, though the Narrator annoyed me by truly screwing up on of my favourites; "An alternative hypothesis for the creation of the universe: 'Stuff happened. What the hell." God, he murdered that line. -_- ------------------------------------ It's great being a Dev, isn't it? |

I have to admit, I liked it, but that's because I havnt read Hogfather in quite a while (I finished thud last month, might be time to start again at The Colour of Magic).
Although, saying that, I did think it didnt transfer the depth of the characters that well, and it understandably cut bits out. I went over the final scene with Susan and Death as well, the show did miss a few lines here and there.
Overall it was enjoyable, killed some of my own views and images on the appearence of characters, however it also allowed me to put a face and an image to characters that I didnt have one for.
Oh, and Ridcully and the wizards rock, they were spot on.

Boycotted it personally. It's like making a film on the 4th harry potter book without the 1st 3. And i didnt think that a TV adaptaion would do it or any of the discworld novels justice.

I thought it was OKish. Something like this is never going to be as good as the books. You lose most of the narrative (including the funny footnotes) in the book, this is unavoidable.
I can't remember if I've read Hogfather although a lot of the plot did seem familiar, such as the Auditors, Death taking the place of the Hogfather and Ponder and his Hex machine, etc.
Still, the wife and kids enjoyed it and its encouraged me to look out all my old TP books to read again (once I finish the Foundation series again)

Edited by: Twilight Moon on 22/12/2006 14:35:09 It was irritating. The plot moved.....on.......so......so.....s....l....o.....w....l....y....... Not to mention the characters were portrayed all wrong. Disappointing imho.
On the other hand Susan wearing that tight corset and breathing heavily did provide a mild distraction. Unfortunately thats about as much entertainment as I got out of it.
(If you woke up breathing today, CONGRATULATIONS!, you get another chance!) |

Thats actually from the books- Death has a voice, but his mouth doesn't move, and he has no toungue or other vital vocal organs. They were just doing as mr Pratchett commands on that one
I quite liked it. Wasn't brilliant, but its a *****ing book (as are all the Discworld novels) and those bits lifted from the book made me laugh all over again. -----------------------------------------------
