Hello, i started small painting project around half a year ago. Im painting full 1500 point Games Workshop Warhammer 40.000 miniature army. Now iŠve nearly completed my task and i would like some opinions. How good work iŠve managed to do?
Pictures and some stuff can be found in my blog http://warpwind.blogspot.com/
Other miniature hobbyists (i know you hide here!) might recognise these models.

I used to play Ultramarines, I know how frustrating painting can be at times.
Your color scheme is good for chaos, but unfortunately your white highlights come out very chalky in appearance.
It looks a bit as if you were trying for a "Blue armor painted white but top layer of paint is peeling" look here.
(Unless I'm completely wrong)
On your next model you do, try the following:
White basecoat, followed by a coat of ultramarine blue.
Then start adding your white washes, (paint mixed with a little bit of water) gradually adding gunmetal grey when you get into the joints and other areas you want dark.
The water will evaporate off, leaving the paint in the *****s and crevices.
It will look more blended and natural.
Just remember Chaos color schemes are usually best when kept in the darker shades of the color wheel, except for Tzeench. They get all Richard Simmons on your ass.
I thought most of the heads and skulls were very well done. You can get more of a realistic look to bare heads by using different shaded washes, but that's only when you've got some experience under your belt, as they can turn out looking kind of like the michelin man but pink.
Your bases are rock solid. If you really want to spice them up a little, drill a teeny hole with a Dremel somewhere inconspicuous, and pack in some model train grass with a set of tweezers. Glue it from behind with some modeling glue, or maybe glue in some green stuff next to it to mimic a small rock.
Last but not least, the chaos lord.
Everything about that particular model draws attention to the chest area, where the painting is the weakest.
I'm not sure how you are with repositioning models, but I would cut off both hands, reposition at least one of the blades so it is facing forward (dremel out a small hole in each piece, then use a small bit of wire to plug the two together)
I think that model would look better with a Cypher backpack, and the skulls affixed to three little bits of mock-up chain you can get at Forgeworld (Off the waist).
Anyhow, I can tell a lot of work went into these, and I know just how hard it can be to put together not only an army, but a painted one.
Look at websites like:
www.coolminiornot.com www.forgeworld.co.uk
Anyhow, good luck!

From the pictures that are taken further out they almost look like they aren't painted yet- but when you look at the close-ups, thats a really sweet paint job.
I have a 2.5k point army of space marines somewhere- I painted them all years ago so most of them came out looking like total rubbish. What sort of brushes, etc were you using? (I'm always getting more and more tempted to try to repaint some of them and see what I can come up with =P)

I used to love 40k when I was younger, was much more into the painting than playing though, I never really got round to playing much, couldnt be doing with learning all the rules .
I do own dawn of war though, I think it's done a great job of capturing some of the atmosphere of the 40k universe, (but then I'm no purist) the combat is nice and brutal too

Umm, i was trying to make city camouflage. Those blue things you see are actually gray that is kinda blue -ish. (Correct me here, im slightly colorblind).

Im not great fan of ink washes. Its more fun when you start with black basecoat then add thin layers of brighter colours.

Agree, those bases are dull. Well im planning on adding some bits like guns, broken legs and other stuff to create illusion of battlefield.

As I said in my blog, im not happy with the paintjob on lord either. I was rushing it too much and outcome was crap.

IŠve repositioned every plastic footsoldier. If you look closely at marines, you can see that iŠve remodeled legs so they look like theyŠre actually moving.

I like. Then again, I lose at painting. (Thank god for 40K computer games, all the fun, no one making fun of my crappily painted Khorne berserkers!)

I used to collect 40k and fantasy years ago, built up quite a collection. for those you understand about 10000 points of various 40k armies and about 8000 points of fantasy armies.
cant find the cash for it these days :(
looks like a nice army for sure. im not a huge fan of the paintjob i feel it needs more defined colours, still its all personal preferance.

I'm tempted to hoke out an old 40k Chaos army I have, probably in the attic in a box at my mums house. Got about 7,000 points worth of stuff there gathering dust. Been ages since I seen them, around about the time when the "new" rules came out (not new now obviously) and simplified things far far too much for my liking.
I preferred it the old way with the dizzying array of customization available, especially the Dark Millennium expansion. That thing rocked, Vortex Grenades were pure sex.
Hmm....I'm ranting a bit. But yeah, your blog has inspired me to finish off painting whatever models are still unpainted.
Nice painting btw.

yea its the same here, i just dont have the cash to flesh out my nid swarm nor the time to paint them all
on another note i have an old friend who has around a full Sector worth in Battlefleet Gothica, he has around 400+ fully painted imperial ships alone,350+ish chaos, 100+ elder and a bunch of other stuff. 200+ ship fleet battles anyone?

Ahh...it'd be just like EVE, all that dice rolling just to get anything done would nicely emulate the lag in a large fleet fight.
