I say this as someone with 5/4/4/3(soon to be 5/4/4/4) in astrometric skils.
The game simply doesnt need faster probing than 3 minutes.

Why not?

um, maybe cause this is not WoW and things arn't majic and can happen instantaniously.
3 mins to probe a system seems pretty bloody fast compared to the act that even the soler system we currently live in isnt even fully probed after what? 50 yrs.

are you suggesting that we should assume that EVE has the same technology as we have in real life? Get a grip.

I agree, having a scan time of less than three minutes prevents me from surfing the pretty ladies in skimpy underwear sites as efficiently as I could when my scan time was five minutes.
Or did you have any other reason for wishing a minimum scan time?

This thread has got to be some sort of secret cypher or so. Probably a secret Al Qaeda transmission disguised as an EvE-O forum post.
Because it certainly doesn't make any sense at face value.

We also don't have amazing technological advances in reading patterns in the red shifting light with quasars and whatsits on objects many AU away.
ALSO we shouldn't be able to warp as fast as we can, which is plenty faster than the speed of light.
ALSO gravity needs to work.

I have a reason: how about balance?
Every whine or nerf that happens in this game comes about because of "balance". We constantly read about how "overpowered" this is, how "risk free" that is. Every ship, mod, mission, (insert whatever here) has someone griping about balance. I just read that the reason the roids in the new regions are so tiny is because they wanted to "balance" the minerals coming out of that space.
Ok so let's talk about balance. Some poor slob is logging off at his POS after minding his business for X amount of time. Some lamer in a Recon is sitting there cloaked waiting. Slob logs off, ship warps off, it takes 2 minutes for his ship to disappear. Lamer drops a probe and it takes 1 minutes to find and destroy him.
There is nothing even remotely "balanced" about that.
Spare me the "log off in a station" rant, it's lost on me. At some point you have to call it quits for the day and the idea that you will get popped when you log off is simply lame.
So for those that want to argue that it's game mechanics, again it's lost on me...so is every other exploit.
CCP needs to shorten the log off timer or increase the probing time. That's my reason.

I have to agree here, It is unfair to allow a scanning system where someone who simply logs out after waiting his aggression timer or never having had one can be probed and destroyed in the 2 mins it takes to disappear.
The new system is great, but totally un-ballenced

It is lame. Here is a counter. Don't log off, go to the POS, minimize and let DT log everyone off, you won't be scanned, as the scanner is dropped to desk also.

Oh, I get it now....
Those 60 second or less scans that I am getting now, they can catch cowards who log-off to escape their death! Now, after they log I can scan them, pop them anyways, and laugh about them FINALLY getting what they deserve. So, It makes me wonder if the OP is trying not to admit that he logged off, but got scanned and popped.
So, yes, we DO need these scan times. And! Now that this has mentally clicked... let me quote the movie Predator "I'm gonna have me some fun. I'm gonna have me some fun. I'm gonna have me some fun."

As with pretty much everything there are "unintended consequences". One has to "balance" the proper use of something against its unintended consequences, then make appropriate changes or compromises.
Logging out of game play is a FACT of life. People do it for many reasons both legit and illegit. Until CCP can find a way to make a proper determination as to reason people log, we can only "speculate". Allowing everyone to be destroyed when they turn the game off is throwing out the baby with the bath water.
Sorry, I am willing to let a few cowards get away in order to allow the vast majority of people to play properly without being griefed.

Its very simple. If you're logging off for legit reasons, do it at a POS, station, or deepsafe. Further, when most people log off, it is assumed that they are either leaving system, or at a station (other alternatives require a bit of work to make sure you know where your specific quarry always is). Thus, the only real people that get caught are those that use the log off trick.

no way! these are the changes that should be made:
1. reduce signal aquisition skill rank to 4 and others to rank 3
2. reduce base scan time to 300 seconds
3. double probe duration in space, especially the shorter ranged ones
4. increase the bonus from scanning frigates to 8% per level instead of 5%
5. give amarr a scanning bonus frigate, they are the only race without one. poor amarr!
6. increase the time a discovered place stays there!!! theres no reason a discovered site should just up and disapear into thin air after a few hours. it takes a long time to find something and a long time to get people together, so let us have our time to explore places weve discovered!
7. reduce skill requirements on hacking and analyze modules

The whole problem is that people sit camped at POS at wait till the ship logs out, then they probe it down. In the mean time, while you are feeding your kids, going to the bathroom, in bed, etc. your ship is being torn to pieces.
It's reducing the game for people who cant put up outposts and pos to playing 23/7.

Then warp to a safe thats a little bit further away.
By the time has dropped probes, scanned and warped to signature and got his buddies there to spank you, you've disappeared.
It's not that hard to adapt.

400 years, Galileo started 1600.
A bit different, as in EVE are hunting for active signals. Would be interesting to add a "power down ship" option, lowering hugely all signals, but putting all module off line and cap to 0.

Yes, from what I have gathered, it do an emergency jump of 1 million km and stay there for 2 minutes, then disappear. It become 15 minutes when aggressed.
You can do a simple test to verify.
If you DC, and return in game usually you spend more than 2 minutes, so if you are in a mission you return at the gate.
But if you are very fast reentering game, less than 2 minutes, you warp back and return in deadspace, even if that is impossible in theory.
So if the 2 minutes aren't expired, the system remember you exact position.
A better system to confirm that for you would be to get a friend and test it with the probes, but I think you can trust the thousand of post about it in the forum.
